12 year old girls stab classmate for Slenderman

Even though they are 12, they still planned it out. They tried to kill a girl, and planned it out for months! They should absolutely be charged as adults.

People are responsible for their own action. For the love all that is logical, stop blaming video games or the parents. I've played violent games when I was a kid, watched R rated movies when I was underaged and did typical stuff my kid self shouldn't be doing, but did anyway. Even as an adult. I can get pretty vengeful in a game and am a warmonger on Civ V when the AI has the nerve to settle near me. Guess what? I've never thought about killing people irl. I don't get into petty fights when someone is being an asshole, either. I find all of that completely pointless in the real world.

Note the bold as this is very crucial. My brother and I were raised by the same people. I'm 26 and he's 18. Before he even reached adulthood, he was in trouble with the law and been to juvey, he's a disrespectful punk with total disregard to everyone else around him, a selfish little prick. In contrast, my record is clean. So no, blaming the parents is just as much of an illogical scape goat as blaming video games. The real blames lies on the individual. No amount of perfect parenting will overcome someone with mental issues. A video game isn't going to magically give someone mental issues, either. To suggest either is ludicrous. This isn't even debatable. Yes, outside influence does play a role, but it's the invidual that plays the bigger role.

So if parents aren't there to instill a sense of responsibility for actions through either reasonable instruction or demonstration that the child mimics, where does it come from? Or does it come at all?

As far as mental issues go, why would they have mental issues? Genetics? That's on the parents too. Because their parents made poor decisions during the child's development? Parents again.

Has anyone ever considered how the military trains it's troops? They use the tool of media in training their troops for combat. They use simulators and military computer games to train. Now tell me what the difference between someone playing a game under the supervision of the military as opposed to someone playing the same genre of games, but in a private household. Given there are many aspects that go into training troops, not just simulators, but at the moment this discussion is about simulated combat....which is what a video game is. Now the troops that are trained perhaps don't start out with any inclination to kill, but through training both simulated and plactical they are become different people with different capabilities. The only difference is that they are aware of it, it isn't subtle.

I always thought they did that just to put the in a simulated real environment, like the way some places use rally advanced simulators to train chopper and airplane pilots

I seriously can not make things any clearer than a personal example that if two people raised by the same people come out completely different, the let's blame the parents excuse falls flat on its face.

As for genetics, you'd have to blame the grandparents, great grandparents and so on. Thus, blaming solely the parents here is also moot since in the case of genetics, certain recessive traits can be hidden for generations and spring  up every now and then. This isn't something you can blame the parents for entirely. A child mimics what they see around them. Blaming the parents out right is dumb as given by a personal example. The majority of the time, bad habits are picked up by fellow peers within their age group at school. There are cases where you can blame the parents, but using it as the "ah hah!" holier than thou answer is just as bad as blaming video games for school shootings.

Personal anecdotes don't make for great universal evidence.

In the case of a genetic mental illness, it's even more on the parents to ensure that the child is raised properly, as some things that come easier for most might be more difficult to understand for them. In the case of "bad habits" picked up from peers at school, it's also the parents' responsibility to not only talk with them before they become bad habits, but support them in breaking the habit or seeking the help necessary to do so.

It isn't to say the parents caused this incident. However, there are several signs that the parents here were just not responsible for their daughters. Could more have been done to avert this incident and bad behavior in general? I certainly think so. Aiming the discussion at parents, those with the capacity to change their children's behaviors, seems a lot more productive than trying to shame spooky literature sites or shrugging it off like there's nothing you can do.

Regardless of personal opinion, a video game didn't stab that classmate, the girls parents didn't stab that classmate, that girl did and no amount of debate will change who done the stabbing.

So someone decided to try and kill another person because of their faith in some made up nonsense? That sounds like it's been done before.

So, wheres all the ones saying...."video games never affect kids behavior" Funny how they all crawl under a rock when the facts come out.

You don't know if it was because of the video game. Chances are it was, but Slenderman goes way beyond some crappy Unity game.

sorry i didn't read the whole thread, short on time. so sorry if this was already mentioned, but you are all talking about if games have a effect or not.

I see it as girls wanted to stab another girl, now that your caught, whats the excuse you give? that you wanted to stab her? no, you make up BS. a excuse. whats popular? Memes/video games. easy to blame it on something controversial.

like i said, if you got caught stabbing classmate, you wouldn't tell the police that you just wanted to kill the person.  you would try to come up with the very best excuse to get out of punishment.

(My take:This is horrible i'm just glad the little girl is alive.but how her friends blame the game for stabbing their friend really gets me mad.its ovioly an excuse .I think when people do these thing and them blam a game just makes young gamers not get to play certain titles because their parents see this or when people on the news say GTA crime's come from the influence of games.)

A 12-year-old girl stabbed 19 times by her two friends in Wisconsin "is improving each and every day," her parents said in a statement on Thursday.

"Our little girl is a fighter," the parents of the victim, who was left to die in a Waukesha park, said, according to NBC News. "We appreciate your patience, love and support, as we too are stunned and saddened by this tragedy."

Supporters also launched a fundraising campaign for the victim on Thursday and say she might need ongoing help for her psychological wounds.

"It's real early to say how long it will take her to get over this situation," family spokeswoman Dana Hoffmann tells PEOPLE. "It's a long-term healing process from a physical as well as mental and emotional standpoint of being so young and being betrayed by your two best friends."

The girl, identified by the initials PL in court documents, was allegedly stabbed by her friends after a weekend slumber party. She was found barely able to breathe by a passerby who called 911.

The two girls, who have been charged as adults with attempted murder, told authorities the attack was inspired by a fictional online character known as Slender Man

Repost but more importantly this is not tech news.

Unbelievable at what people will blame today, instead of stepping up to their idiotic mistakes. Humanity needs some extreme help.

Two 12-year-old girls in the US state of Wisconsin have been accused of stabbing a classmate in order to please an online fictional character.

Morgan Geyser and Anissa Weier have been charged with attempted murder and face up to 65 years in prison.

The unnamed victim was stabbed 19 times on Saturday and left in the woods.

The girls reportedly planned the crime to demonstrate dedication to Slenderman, a character who appears in stories on the website Creepypasta.

The victim, 12, was reportedly found by a cyclist on Saturday after crawling from the woods with stab wounds to her arms, legs and torso.

She was said to be in stable condition as of Monday evening, local media reported.

Both suspects were later found walking near a local highway, and a knife was found in one of the girls' backpacks, police said.

EDIT: Incident happened in May, but only within the last couple of days the girls have been deemed not mentally fit to stand trial because she 'talks to Voldemort'

Psychologist Brooke Lundbohm said Geyser told her that she sees unicorns, has mind control powers and believes Voldemort told her that Slender Man is real.
