Build idea for my grandparents

JAW96

my aunt told my grandparents about the XP security issue, and the decided the best way to handle it was to not use their PC anymore, and while they were talking about it I told them I could build them one, so I made up a list

My Little Fermi Rig is built in the N200 its a pretty nice case but the hard drive cages were a bugger the cable is facing the front instead of the back but its pretty silent even with a stock cooler.

My grandma has used up about 10-20% of her 1TB drive. And you should never have less than 8GB of RAM with an APU, otherwise you might start to run out.

OP, I'll do a $500 or so build right now to see what I can come up with. :)

well with HD the cost between a 1tb and anything lower is so little it is not worth it, and with ram I have a cousins who visit there often and play games, so that is for them, plus APU it has no VRAM

I wish that was a valid option as a windows 7 user, but the cost for a proper copy of windows 7 compared to 8.1 doesn't justify it

Yeah, my dad (who's probably the same age as you youngsters grandparents) is a heavy gamer. He has a 500gb and rarely gets even close to maxing it out.

I can't disagree more with your RAM statement though. I have 4gb in my ultrabook, with HD4000 graphics. Which is basically an APU. It uses it all when I game, yes, but it's not that bad.

well with HD the cost between a 1tb and anything lower is so little it is not worth it, and with ram I have a cousins who visit there often and play games, so that is for them, plus APU it has no VRAM

Ahh, fair enough. Without the gaming though, APU's work perfectly fine with 4gb of RAM. Or if your cousins play basic games (Starcraft 2, Diablo 3, etc) you don't need it.

I think it does, but in the interest of keeping it as close to $500 as possible, I went with the 5800k. And even then it would probably be a negligible upgrade.

Yeah, I built a PC for my grandparents and I only went with an athlon x2, 4gb ram and a 1tb hdd.

I found it difficult not going with 8gb ram and a ssd because, it's just habit to pick them :)

Given that your grandparents are most likely using their PC for basic purposes such as web surfing & email, 4GB is more than enough memory for them. Take a look at what I've put together.
