Youtube now using HTML 5 in Chrome whenever it is possible

WereCat

Hi, Chrome officialy started using HTML 5 whenever it is possible. Previously you could visit https://www.youtube.com/html5 to watch videos in HTML 5 but now when you visit that website you get message that HMTL 5 is being used whenever it is possible.

Also videos are played in new standard VP9 instead of VP8 which should improve bitrate quality for about 44% which would make videos only 7% worse in quality compared to H.265 / HEVC with Main profile and therefore better than H.264.

I think it is great news as Flash should be gone already because of its vulnerability. Also I like improved quality.

Instantly noticeable on 1080p videos. 15down and (it looks like) I can buffer about 2-3x as fast as I could previously, which is very nice.

I'll check out the HTML5 thing in a sec.

There are quite a few problems with HTML5 for me though, double audio and sometimes very slow buffering.

One thing i noticed from html5 is that it's using way less cpu usage than flash player.I tried it 1 month ago in 4k video and the cpu usage on full screen was only 5% whereas with flash it goes over 50%

EDIT

Just watched 4k from explorer with html5

Flash is the worst thing ever. But since Google are being wankers, only vp8 is available for IE. They need to release VP9 for IE pronto, as HTML5 player seems to work a lot better than flash.

I'm using Magic Actions For YouTube to force Flash since the HTML player isn't allowing me to watch videos over 1080p.

Look again.

MSE & WebM VP9 enabled

Did not know about that. I tried it and you are right. But this is issue as long as you have greater than 1080p display and I think it will get resolved soon. Or is it some restriction in HTML5 it self?

That's just what the browser supports, not what's actually used for the videos.

They might check if your browser supports VP9 for future usage.

As far as I know, Youtube still only uses H.263, H.264, MPEG-4 Visual and VP8 for videos.

“For us at Google, at YouTube, trying to satisfy the consumer demand for 4K content, we know that actually the answer isn’t VP9 or HEVC, it’s the next generation of the technology. Because as we build better technologies, we figure out better ways to use all of that data,” said Frost.

However he added: “Youtube is going to be migrated to VP9. It is currently supporting VP9 streams. The best path to 4K video for YouTube right now is VP9.”

HTML is buggy with 4k, so I turn on the 'force Flash' function on the extension I use to Auto-HD videos.

How do you force it? None of my videos will show 4K anymore thanks to this update.

A little while ago there was an opt-in setting for using solely HTML5 (whenever able) for video streaming on YouTube, without going through that page. I remember opting for it. Then again, it could of been a closed beta or something, but I believe it was open.

I've noticed that as well, 1080p content buffers in less than half the time it takes for adobe flash. I would watch half a video before it reached 1080p with adobe flash (that's with 25 Mbps+ down).

I depends on the video if you can select 4K when the video is using HTML5,

videos you can but
videos you can't, first thought is that they haven't re-encoded them for it yet.

That's just what the browser supports, not what's actually used for the videos.

Again it depends on the video but some are using VP9 but most seem to be using H.264/AVC (identified as AVC1), you can check by right clicking and selecting 'Stats for nerds' to find out what a video is using, the 'newer' video above is using VP9 for all resolutions on Chrome.

A Chrome extension called Magic Actions for Youtube.  You can do auto-HD, use a 'cinema' mode, move some of the UI into the middle, nighttime mode, and various other things as well as forcing a player type.
