- this is exactly how it happens when you're on a time crunch.

Do yourselves a favor and buy a real self-laminating cable label printer. It's a friggin' game-changer.

Also, why get a square hole rack if everything you're mounting just hangs by the ears on cage nuts or rack studs? Get threaded 10-32 uprights instead, it's easier.

Also, why get a square hole rack if everything you're mounting just hangs by the ears on cage nuts or rack studs? Get threaded 10-32 uprights instead, it's easier.

Seriously though, for everyone reading this who wants to get into professional IT (or video): it's so much easier to follow your cable numbers when they're not handwritten on little flags sticking perpendicular off the cables. I've used a Brady IDXpert extensively on bundles of Cat6a and Belden 1855 coax, the stuff's great. They don't smudge, they don't fade, and they don't get snagged on crap and tear off.

 

Just don't get the old-school kind where you make the cable number up using little strips of individual repeating number stickers. Those suuuuck.

 

No matter how you tag your cables though, sticking to a numbering system that's logical and consistent is the most important part! (And if there's anyone on the team who I think will stick with a logical system, it's Dan.) Our plant has dozens of racks and multiple data closets, mostly full of video gear that's all connected point-to-point with SDI. Since the cables probably number in the six digits, we can't just number them sequentially. The cable numbers are basically generated by a formula that includes the rack number and elevation of their source. So for the cable in port 43 of the corporate network switch at elevation 35 of rack 17 in data closet 2, the number looks something like CORP0217.3543. That doesn't tell you where the cable goes, but as long as someone updated the CAD drawings when they ran that one it's not too difficult to cross-reference. Nothing brings a project crashing down faster than re-using a cable that's just tagged "Joe's temp cable" from 5 years and a dozen projects ago.

Get a label printer that has cable wrap/roller over mode, 24mm tape. Wrap it nicely around the cable so there is no stupid tag flapping around and dual label each end with what it is and what the other end is. Do the same for your patching cables.

 

Go the extra step and spreadsheet each cabinet and patch panel/port and have column for where it goes, matching the labeling on the cables obviously.

As a ex IT manager I hope my team work more professionally than this, but somehow I doubt it. But all my installs look way better than this, still fun to watch though. I give it a solid 5/10 with 10/10 for effort.

the thing about professional work is that if you're on a time crunch it often doesnt 'look' very professional, unless your staff are extremely uptight about 'looking' professional.. which usually means other problems are being hidden. case in point... i  have dealt with an electrician on a job site that looked EXTREMELY professional.. mostly because 90% of the time he was in WAY over his head, and mistakes were made. i think in the end some 10% of cabling was wrong, missing, broken, or failed signal integrity testing.

 

essentially the task here is nothing but disassembly and reassembly, and there's two key components that matter:

- everything that was connected, should be connected again

- the downtime should be as short as possible.

 

and there's nothing that keeps morale and speed high like some fun in the workplace does.

I agree that downtime should be kept to minimum and the work done on the video was acceptable for the level of work carried by LMG. The main issue I always ran into is that a third party would have to sign of on the work. So if my guys didn't get it right the first time they would have go back and fix it, this was okay as we employed by the site so it wasn't really cost related. I wasn't really being serious about my initial comment it was just a little dig on the differences between many worlds of IT. I once had to shutdown a network room due to one faulty strip light in a row of six.

Behind closed doors and away from customers or managers I couldn't care less about "looking the part", if people want to work in their underwear then go for it. Just maybe put some pants on in front of a customer lol

but yes, defenately agree. when the people who pay for the party come to chime in the vibe is very different.

 

i did at some point latch slip a door in front of the QA manager because they had locked themselves out of a storage room.. but the result of that was that they FIXED THE DARN LATCHES on their high security facility..

 

now that i think of it.. i did a LOT of latch slipping at that job site..

Doesn't concrete floor paint uses a lot of solvents like thinners? If so, when you put your employees to paint, to save money, it can be a very big liability to you, those solvents are very addictive, toxic and dangerous, If something happened to one of them this could cause you a lot of medical and legal trouble.

 

I don't know Canadian work laws but here where I live, work laws says that if a employee is asked to do something outside his job function, even if he wasn't forced to, and he did something that harmed him, even if it was his fault, because he wasn't doing what he was hired for you would be forced to pay all his medical bills and more(if he went after it).

There are a thousand different coatings for concrete. We are perfectly capable of reading an MSDS, cracking the bay doors, and putting in some box fans.
