is the rtx 4080 bad value after all?

Andreas Pedersen

Hi,
I wanted to upgrade to the 4080 but after seeing the price I was thrown a bit off, but now that I think more about it, is it really a bad deal after all? I got a strix 3080 which I can sell for msrp (already have serveral people text they want to pay this much) and use the money I get from selling it towards buying a 4080, but is it still bad value?

I wouldn't trade in a 3080 for a 4080 + Cash.  I'm assuming you're going to get $700 for the 3080 and pay $1200 for the 4080?

Not worth it IMO, but you lack a lot of info we could use to help make that decision.

According to the entire community - yes.

Here's a 3-page long discussion, if you're still unsure 😅

I mean yeah. They are priced closer to 1500$ rn and only beat current 1500$ cards (3090ti) by a bit. But has less memory and such.

Its also double the price of what a 80 tier card cost 1 generation ago.

Right, if the 4080 was $1000 and you could still get $700, then it would be more linear.

I mean it's basically paying more for more performance.  How much is x% increase worth to you?

For me, $629 for a 6900xt is where my train stops.  It no longer rides on Nvidia tracks either.

And you'd pay less for the 4080. If it was $300 cheaper, and the 3080 was going for $300 less(it wouldn't actually be going for that little online. They've settled around $550 online) you'd be out the same amount of money. Less cash would be out of your bank account though.

I'm not actually trying to be as grumpy as it seems.

I will find your mentions of Ikea or Gnome and I will /s post.

I can buy the 4080 for 1200 just fine. Idk where you are where the prices are so inflated.

He's not in the US, his $ is after the number.  So I expect everywhere but here has inflated pricing.  1500 is nuts though.

If we're talking about value in the 40 series, it's slightly better than the 4090. The 4090 is about 25% faster and 30% more expensive. Compared to a 3080, you're getting around 40% more performance for almost double the price, which just shows how bad value the 40 series are.

Unless you need CUDA, I would personally wait for the RX 7900 XT(X). From what we know now it seems like it will beat the 4080 by being cheaper and faster, but we still need to wait for reviews to confirm that. I really wouldn't support Nvidia with everything they've done recently, unless you have no other choice.

I think you mean compared to a 3090/3090Ti... it's 40%+.  4090 should be at least 50% better than the 3080.  Specify clarifying resolutions, games, etc.

lots of tax where I live so prices are a bit higher here, I can get 695 USD for my 3080 right now and the cheapest 4080 goes for 1560 USD which means I have to pay 865 USD for a 4080 tuf.

Seems you're right, haven't read a lot of 4080 reviews yet. For some reason the Techpowerup graph shows it as a 42% increase from the 3080. That still doesn't change the fact that it's not worth almost double the price of the 3080 though.

True, but the AMD slide says '4K Max Settings', and the HUB screenshot shows Very High which isn't max. But AMD only shows max framerates, so who knows what the averages are.

Its 60% the die as a 4090.  When games and processors catch up the difference between a 4090 and 4080 will widen.  If you have listened to a variety of reviews that already shows true for ray tracing.  The problem we have with both cards, and probably the 7900xtx, even at 4k titles are very CPU limited.

I think the 7x 3d chips will help a little bit at least

He's not in the US, his $ is after the number.  So I expect everywhere but here has inflated pricing.  1500 is nuts though.

just checked,  cheapest in Germany 1900 €  !!!

but honestly you'd have to be really unexperienced to even want one, its not the first time nv pulls this off... you'd be much better of waiting for a 4080ti/super, or indeed just a 3080/ti, because the jump to a 4000 card seems really small and kinda useless... again,  not the first time, not the last time,  this is *not* a new generation of cards (even if the naming suggests so)

But im sure jensen needs a new jacket,  so you do you! (not you personally)  😉
