Why does this GPU?

AMD announced the Radeon Pro SSG in 2016 combining a GPU and onboard SSD - But when it launched in 2017, practically nobody bought it. Was it simply ahead of its time, or was it truly a dud?

I think the idea could be very useful but it needs to be tried with a more powerful gpu like a 3090.

I can't help but think, wouldn't storage on a GPU be a great idea for gaming? Put all your games on the GPU and it'll need less steps between them right? Just spitballing, don't actually know.

Seems like the ideal thing for a small form factor build. But other than that the idea seems very limited in its applicability.

Though, personally I look forward to all the slews of security issues that is inevitably going to follow along with Microsoft's direct storage, and similar "CPU-less storage access" ideas.

(But to be fair, I wouldn't see it as too unrealistic to make a GPU go fetch data from an PCIe connected device as is already, but most graphics APIs and drivers tends to not really include a lot of PCIe access to anything from the GPU's perspective other than returning data to the CPU, and reverse engineering the GPU's machine code is a challenge in itself, so any potential security issues here seems not that well explored to be honest, though breaking out of the API sandbox is likely a large enough challenge to start with. Leaving firmware updates as the only practical attack vector at current.)

no, everything passes throught the cpu, it would have to first go to the cpu then the cpu would tell the gpu to do calculations, it would take more pcie lanes from the gpu itself.

Damn, that turn around time was fast AF. Praise Gaben

Quite sad nothing could be found to do with it though.

Was any mining testing, or like a beyond massive blender render?

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

That would be a sight to behold.
A blender render in need of TB of memory to properly render. Rendering at 4K or more would likely be required at the very least to appreciate the details in the scene.

Or one just simulates a bit of water, making a water fall will consume a fair bit, especially for a longer scene.

With Nvidia and IBM announcing Big Accelerator Memory (BaM) yesterday, I would say it was a product ahead of its time. BaM allows GPUs and SSDs to communicate without a proprietary API.

But is it even does?

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.
