Why are MicroSD used more then SD Cards?

whm1974

I'm kind of irked about full size SD Cards are not more commonly used in Mobile Devices that are large enough to easily fit them. Like the Steam Deck, Smartphones and Tablets that larger Screen Sizes for some examples. One of the worse things about the MicroSD Format is how easy it is to lose/drop them. For SIM Cards it makes far more sense.

I consider this to be huge Market Failure. Does anyone else also hates MicroSD?

I don't see them as much of an issue. You can put one into an adapter in order to use it in a full sized slot without issue, but you can't put a full size card into an adapter to make it smaller.

But you can only used the adapter in Devices that will take Full size SD Cards.

Why not design the Mobile Device to take Full Size SD Cards to begin with?

They take up a MASSIVE amount of space. It's not just the size of the SD card itself, but the mechanism holding and connecting to it.

How often do you need to move the microSD card from devices using such anyway?

Main system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, Corsair Vengeance Pro 3200 3x 16GB 2R, RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

Because there's not a lot of empty space inside a mobile device to fit a big card. A big card is unnecessarily thick and big - technology has evolved and manufacturing process has improved a lot.

Yes, meaning that you don't need an adapter to use the card in devices that don't use full sized cards, such as phones and tablets where space is more of a priority. Why would you want to use a card that physically takes up a lot more space that could be used for other components?

Yes, I knew someone was going to point that out. Obviously I meant an adapter that goes inside the SD card slot, but you are right.

Simply because it's a waste of space, and since most devices have been using microSD for so long people are more likely to have micros laying around than full size.

You might say the Steam Deck is big, but if you look at the teardown it's nt like there's much leftover space.

Removable Storage. SIM Cards don't need to be changed that often. I just a few people whop dropped and lost a MicroSD Card before. This was back when 32GB versions were not cheap. I wouldn't know how much they are now.

The last I used any Memory Card Format was back when Portable MP3 Players and Digital Cameras were a thing.

Micro SD cards are usually not changed often either. At least for most uses, you put it in once and then just use the devices usb to transfer.

For me, I have one in

Raspberry pi

Telephone

Nintendo switch

Nintendo 3ds

Nintendo ds

Old portable media player

And I have never needed to take any of them out after initially inserting them.

What device do you have that takes microSD and you need to move it out often? The only devices I have that take it are mobile phones/tablets and my Switch. In all those cases, you fit it and forget it. You might only rarely move it if you're upgrading which is hardly a frequent occurrence.

High end digital cameras are still a thing. Mine are some years out of date now, a mix of SD and CF. I still have an Aibo somewhere if we're talking Memory Stick.

I'm aware that High End Digital Cameras are a thing. But wasn't referring to those. The first MP3 Player I had was an RCA that used SD Cards. The one other used a built in 20GB HDD and could take a CF Card.
