Through an interview by Finland's ISTV with Esko Yliruusi, who worked as a data communications specialist at Nokia from 1996 through 2001, it was revealed that Nokia was planned to release a tablet backed in 2001.

The tablet is called Nokia Web Tablet, it looks like Nokia's N-Gage. It is big and bulky, and it even has a kickstand similar to Microsoft Surface. The screen is also in black and white, and user has to rely on the buttons placed on both sides of the screen. Nokia decided not to release this product back in 2001, and it was never revealed to public till now.

The M510 web tablet is quite bulky compared to today’s tabs and also has a stand to help you stand it up vertically. The display is black and white and rather than touch, it relies heavily on the buttons located on both sides of the display.

In terms of specifications, the tablet featured a 10-inch (800×600 pixels) display, 32MB of SDRAM, 32MB of flash memory, a battery that could last four hours, and a USB port that could be used to connect an external keyboard. On the software front, it ran on an old Symbian OS called EPOC and you could run apps like e-mail, calendar, Opera web browser and notepad app.

I tried to do that in the 90's when I got inspired by Star Trek, but all I did was a cardboard monitor with drawing of buttons...

Yeah I know. I couldn't thing of a better way to get across just how unmarketable that thing would've been. So I opted for sarcasm about a hypothetical situation.

Gotta give them credit for that, back then they at least knew that something they created wouldn't sell for shit.

It has round edges....Apple will kill them in court.

Actually rather impressive considering it was 2001....It is obviously a flawed product and would not have been a success but shows that they were thinking in the right direction. Considering that apple announced the first ipad in 2001....They had the messagepad in the 90s but that was more like a virtual notebook.

This doesn't surprise me, there were plenty of tablet computers around at that time.
