  • 2 weeks later...

Did you guys notice they have completely removed the local backup options from the new Settings that existed in Win10? You have to access File History in the old control panel to get it working or change settings (which they supposedly will remove in the future).

New Build, New Feature - 22494

A feature that didn't make it day 1 for Win11, global mute button accessible from the system tray:

04-Mute-zoomZoom2X.png.90dd8520286edd2c1db4fe2c369e044e.png

If you are using multiple video meeting app for work, all with different shortcuts or GUI location for the mute/unmute, you know have a global one.

Also the following improvements are introduced:

Quote
  • We are trying out showing snap groups in ALT + TAB and Task View with some Windows Insiders just like when you hover open apps on the taskbar, and you see them there. This isn’t available to all Insiders just yet as we plan to monitor feedback and see how it lands before pushing it out to everyone.
  • If you’re searching for file type or link types under Settings > Apps > Default apps, we’ll now show a dropdown of options containing your current query without having to first press enter.
  • If needed, you can now launch the installed apps settings page under Settings > Apps > Installed apps directly via this URI: ms-settings:installed-apps.
  • Adjusted the names of the sort by options under Settings > Apps > Installed apps to help make them clearer and added a new option to sort from smallest to largest size.

As fixes:

Quote

Taskbar

  • Tooltips should no longer appear in random places on the Taskbar after sliding your mouse over volume, battery, network, or other icons in the Taskbar corner.
  • Addressed an underlying issue that was leading to come unexpected duplication of certain icons in the Taskbar corner.

File Explorer

  • Addressed an issue that was causing the context menu to crash for some people if you tried to scroll it.
  • Did some work to help address an issue where in certain areas of the screen the context menu submenus would draw on top of the context menu instead of beside it (for example, if you hovered over New).
  • The context menu icons should be less blurry on systems with multiple monitors with mixed DPI now.
  • Addressed an issue that could cause selecting Open With in the context menu to unexpectedly just open the file in certain cases rather than actually opening the Open With dialog.
  • Renaming files on the desktop is back up and running in this flight.
  • Made another adjustment to the command bar underlying logic to help improve performance of command actions in File Explorer.

Search

  • Fixed a recent issue that was causing the indexer database to become too fragmented, leading to the indexer unexpectedly consuming a large amount of memory and CPU for a prolonged period of time. This was particularly noticeable for people that have large Outlook mailboxes.

Input

  • Mitigated an issue that was causing certain apps to hang when trying to drag something with the Shift or Ctrl key held down.
  • Fixed an issue that was causing the touch keyboard to not appear on tablets when tapping the text field if you were to try to reset your PIN from the login screen.
  • Improved reliability of the Pen menu.

Windowing

  • Fixed a few explorer.exe crashes related to using windowing features (snap, ALT + Tab, and Desktops).
  • If you open Task View on a system with multiple monitors, the background should now be acrylic on both monitors.
  • Addressed a couple UI issues with the window thumbnails in Task View and ALT + Tab, notably that the close button might get cut off if the app window was too thin.

Settings

  • Addressed an issue where Facial Recognition (Windows Hello) might be unexpectedly greyed out in Sign-in Settings in certain cases until closing and opening Settings.
  • Fixed an issue where Storage Sense wasn’t cleaning up C:\Windows\SystemTemp.
  • Standard users (aka non-admins) should now be able to change the time zone in Settings if Location access is not granted, rather than the dropdown going blank.

Other

  • Fixed an issue causing links to Windows Update, Recovery and For developers to show under the main Windows Update Settings page.
  • Fixed a bug where images had a yellow tonality in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Lightroom and Adobe Lightroom Classic when in HDR mode.
  • Mitigated an issue related to DHCP that was causing unexpected power usage while the screen was off in recent builds for some Insiders.
  • Did some work to help address an issue where Service Host: WinHTTP Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Service would unexpectedly utilize a lot of CPU.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause some devices to have a black screen when coming out of sleep (where the lock screen wouldn’t display).
  • Addressed an underlying issue that was causing some users with ARM64 PCs to experience an increase in Microsoft Teams crashes in the last few Dev Channel builds.
  • We have increased the padding for selected items as seen by clicking Show More Options in the File Explorer context menu, or the menu options in Task Manager.
  • WSL: Fixed error 0x8007010b when accessing Linux distributions via `\\wsl.localhost` or `\\wsl$` (Issue #6995).

Microsoft releases a new app: Media Player (for Windows 11).

Media Player is a new app, built form the ground up to have a single player which can play music and videos (and yes it loads quickly, even on my potato computer).

It aim to replace "Groove Music" and "Movies & TV" apps once it will be completed

Playback_Music.png

Playback_Mini.png (352×352)

MainScreen.png

To get it, just check through the Store that all your app are fully updated, and open in the start menu "Groove Music", you'll notice that once you open it, the app will be called "Media Player - Preview". It is a simple app which continues to support the ability to play FLAC, OGG, and all previous music and video formats/codecs supported.

  • 2 weeks later...

As the holidays are coming, things are winding down, as you may have noticed.

That said, Microsoft releases today an update to Paint app of Windows 11.

The update feature a number of small fixes, but also includes more work done on its user interface to better match Windows 11 looks & feel.

paint1.thumb.png.07e84e97cf8356760a6e9b0946704435.png

The Color Picker has finally got updated, and so did the resize and skew dialog box.

Still no Dark theme, and Properties panel hasn't been updated yet. Nice to see that Microsoft seems to aim to finish the app.

You should see the update of the app through the Store app.

They've been going at it since August 1, 2012.

At this pace the control panel might be completely removed by 2040.

Notepad got updated:

  • Multi-Undo support (however it is still group of words based / time based, and not per word or char like other editors)
  • Dark Mode

NotepadDarkHero.png

The app is updated through the Store app.

All Dev channel users should have it by now. Check for app updates via the Store if you don't have it.

Build 22518

This build is not available to ARM64 users of Windows 11, this is because of known bug which would fail the update. Microsoft is working on it.

What's new:

  • Temperature Widget now shows itself on the taskbar. When you click on it, will open teh Widget panel.
  • The Widget button has been removed in favor of the above behavior.
    Weather-2.png
(if you have the taskbar to the left, the weather will be a single icon pinned as a normal app on the task bar).

  • Spotlight... as your wallpaper. Microsoft finally introduces Spotlight background for not only your lock screen but now for your desktop. When enabled via: Settings > Personalization > Backgrounds. You'll have an icon the desktop which you can use to say if you like the picture or not, and switch the picture to another one:
    Spotlight.png

  • Voice Access. New Accessibility feature which allows you to control your system via voice. View article for full details, it is long, but here are pictures provided:
    Win-Settings-for-Speech.png

    Number-overlays.png

    Grid-overlays.png

  • The command: "wsl -install", will now install the Store version of WSL, making it easier to install without the need to need to restart your PC as before (via "Windows Features" panel). It also has new install commands, like you can install WSL without auto-running it for the first time after install.

  • The input switcher layout has been improved and now has transparency affect:
    ime-switcher-ui.png

Search

  • Did some work to help address an issue where an invisible window frame for the recent searches flyout could end up stuck on the screen, consuming input in that area.
  • When you’re hovering over items in the recent searches flyout, truncated text in the flyout (for example, when using the accessibility setting to make text larger) will now have a tooltip so you can see the full text.
  • Improved visibility of the text in the recent searches flyout if a contrast mode was enabled.

  • Fixed an issue that could lead to seeing an unexpected blank icon after compressing a file, instead of the one corresponding to your default app for handling that file type.
  • Right clicking on a folder and then quickly closing and reopening the File Explorer window should no longer lead to an explorer.exe crash when the “run as a separate process” option is enabled.
  • Removed some unexpected characters in the dialog when moving user account folders to another location.
  • If you right click on files like .htm in File Explorer, the icon next to Microsoft Edge Canary, Beta or Dev should now display correctly (if installed) under Open With, instead of showing a generic icon.
  • Addressed an issue that could lead to icons for app entries (like Windows Terminal) in the context menu going missing / being invisible sometimes.
  • Improved the consistency of the background color of the command bar and menu dropdowns when a contrast mode was enabled.
  • Made some more little improvements to help with File Explorer folder navigation performance.

Input

  • If you’ve pressed WIN + Period and have navigated to the emoji or gifs section with a search term, when you go back to the main page, we will now clear out the search query so you can start fresh.
  • The IME candidate window should now appear more reliably when typing into Search immediately after booting your PC.
  • Fixed an issue where u-mode/v-mode/name-mode wasn’t not showing candidates when typing with the Simplified Chinese IME.
  • Fixed an issue where the Japanese IME was unexpectedly displaying candidates in horizontal mode instead of vertical mode.
  • Fixed an issue where the IME toolbar might randomly show on the lock screen.
  • Addressed an issue where the keyboard focus wouldn’t always be in the right place after pressing WIN + Period, depending on where you’d left focus the last time the window was used.

  • Clicking on your personalized family emoji in the most recently used list in the emoji panel should no longer unexpectedly invoke the customization UI.
  • If you try to start voice typing (WIN + H) without setting focus to a text box first, the popup suggesting you move focus should work again now.

  • Fixed an issue that was causing Settings to crash when going to open options for added languages for some Insiders.
  • Fixed a few issues on the Text Input page under Personalization, including:
    • The preview image for your current set up should be showing now.
    • Added a few keywords to help search for this page.
    • Improved read out of the page for screen reader users.
  • Searching for the word widgets should return to the corresponding Settings page with that toggle now.

Other

  • Mitigated an issue believed to be causing Insiders with certain devices to be experiencing bug checks with the error SYSTEM_SERVICE_EXCEPTION in recent flights.
  • Fixed an issue where users updating from Builds 22000.xxx, or earlier, to newer Dev Channel builds using the latest Dev Channel ISO would receive the following warning message: The build you are trying to install is Flight Signed. To continue installing, enable flight signing.
  • Removed some excess padding on the left of the boot logo, which was causing it to look off-center compared to the progress wheel.
  • Addressed an issue where UAC was unexpectedly showing “Unknown program” when trying to elevate certain programs, despite them having proper names.
  • Fixed an issue leading to Narrator unexpectedly saying “No item in view” sometimes when tabbing to win32 text boxes.

  • Fixed an issue leading to acrylic unexpectedly not working in certain places in the preview flight.
  • Mitigated an issue leading to some people unexpectedly seeing “Something went wrong” when trying to click the “stop recording” button when recording a message in Voice Recorder.

If your system tray icons are broken like so:

815962724_Screenshot2022-01-22145521.png.3297dfd11083e64bfe805d714c452377.png

Using the open source project ViveTool, a feature flag switcher tool for Windows Insider, which you can get here:

https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases

FireCube on Twitter identified the feature flag that causes the problem which you can disable and solve the problem.

Simply open Command Prompt and navigate where ViveTool is extracted, and type and execute:

vivetool.exe addconfig 35599125 1

Lastly, restart explorer.exe, and you should have the feature disabled.

1658523938_Screenshot2022-01-22145951.png.fa6fbe21cba0989cabfeda79441b033c.png

To turn it back on (undo):

vivetool.exe addconfig 35599125 2

And of course, restart explorer.exe once again

I don't have Weather Widget in taskbar in latest Dev Build in VMware Workstation. How to enable?

  • The updated entry point for Widgets with weather on the taskbar first introduced with Build 22518 should now be available to all Windows Insiders in the Dev Channel.

Assuming you are:

  • Dev channel
  • latest build
  • AND Widget icon is enabled
  • AND you didn't disable the Store, and all apps are updated (as you need: Web Experience Pack to be updated)
  • AND you restarted your system at least once recently.

Using ViveTool: https://github.com/thebookisclosed/ViVe/releases

Type and execute the commands:

vivetool addconfig 34301415 2
vivetool addconfig 36553793 2
vivetool addconfig 36226054 2
vivetool addconfig 36226456 2

Restart File Explorer. Click on the Widget icon, and close back the panel, and now the weather should show in a few minutes.

Note: Do at your own risk. The above config ids that ViveTool will toggle are community found, and might cause other issues.

Microsoft doesn't support this.

Oh God that's horrible.

When I resize windows I often resize them so that they are no bigger than they need to be. If I got a list of things in notepad, I resize the window to be exactly as wide as the longest line in notepad. With this change, I have to guess which size I should resize it to.

It is honestly amazing how Microsoft seemingly always manage to make terrible changes for no apparent reasons. Why would anyone at Microsoft thing this change improves anything?

If you pay close attention, under Windows 8/10: the content doesn't scale on the unfocused window. The content is just cut out, or you see the background.

Prior to this update, under Windows 11, it is the same as you see in the update, just without the icon, it is just the glass effect.

So I am not sure where your complaint comes from...

I'm not on 12th gen, but for the past month, windows keeps on trying to update to win11 and I kept on pausing it. Is it generally safe now to complete the upgrade or are there still issues running specific games? I really did not follow the win11 news so I'm clueless with this.

I know that the window doesn't rescale until I let go of the mouse button, but I can still see the content. I usually don't need to have my content rescaled to accurately rescale my windows. But I do need to see the content.

Here is an example of something I do daily. I resize my NotePad++ application so that I can see all the text, but not a bunch of whitespace. I do this so that my browser, or PuTTY or whatever, is as big as possible without me missing any information in NotePad++.

I do this with other applications as well, such as Excel. This change makes resizing any program that do not rescale its content a much worse experience, and I don't see any reason for it.

  • 3 weeks later...

New Build 22557

What's new:

  • The release of the first version of the Start menu folders.
    Start-Folders.png

Simply drag an app on top of another app to form a folder. You can add more apps, of course, and remove them by dragging the app out.

  • Do Not Disturb and Focus experiences. Microsoft has "re-imaged" (as they say) the way focus assist feature works.

    Do Not Disturb
From the Notification Center , you can now easily enable "Do not disturb", which will mute notifications from poping up, and will directly show up in the Notification Center list.
    dnd-notif.png
Under Settings  > System > Notifications, you can setup rules to turn it on automatically, similarly to "Focus assist" feature that we have now (well... prior now)

    Focus
When you open the Notification Center, you'll have the option to start a focus sessions for a period of time that you can define.
    When enabled:

    • Taskbar badging will turn off
    • Flashing of applications in the taskbar will turn off
    • A timer will appear on screen
    • 'Do not disturb' feature will turn on

  • Live Captions
Similarly to Android Pixel devices, you have a live caption feature. It will transcribe anything coming out through your speakers. The options can be found under Quick Settings Accessibility flyout (WIN + Ctrl + L). Currently it support English US only.

  • Quick Access
The Quick Access section under File Explorer now allows you to pin files, not just folders as before.
    quick-access-update2.png

    Microsoft adds:
    Quote

Next, for users who log into Windows with (or attach as a secondary account) a Microsoft Account or Work/Education account, Pinned and Recent files from Office.com will also be shown in Quick Access. Changes that pin or unpin files hosted in OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams will sync and be reflected in Office.com and Office apps. File activity updates from collaborators such as edits, and comments are shown in Tiles view and can also be shown in Details view.

  • OneDrive Folder improvement
When you go specifically to the OneDrive folder, you now have a quick access button to show the storage consumption and availability of your OneDrive account.
    OneDrive-File-Explorer.png

  • New Touch Gestures

    • Swipe to invoke and dismiss Start - swipe with your finger from the middle of the taskbar to invoke the Start menu and swipe back down to dismiss it.
      Invoking-Start-.gif

    • Swipe between Pinned/All apps and Recommended/More on Start - Swipe left/right to switch between all apps and pinned apps, or more recommended, just perform teh action on either section of the Start menu.

      Horizontal-Swiping-Start.gif

    • Swipe to invoke and dismiss Quick Settings - If you swipe up from the bottom right of the taskbar to invoke Quick Settings and swipe back down to dismiss it.
      Invoking-Quick-Settings.gif

    • Swipe to invoke and dismiss Notification Center - This was already there, but now it has been polished, and provide a nice animation when displaying the notification center.

    • In full screen touch-oriented apps and games (UWP apps/games), when you perform the above swipes, you'll see a "gripper", a tag, if you will, that will show up instead. Repeat the action on this "gripper" and it will how show the panel. This is to avoid accidents while using an app/game.

      Example:
      Gripper-Screenshot.thumb.png.b3663928178bcc046eab1d3afa6f5321.png

  • Improved Snap Layouts
To improve the discoverability of the previously improved snap layouts, when you drag a window to the top middle of the screen, you'll have the option you normally have when you roll over the "maximize/restore" button. This also makes it easier to do on a touch focused device.
    SnapLayoutsWIP-resized.gif

It also features improved animations of the Snap Assist.

  • Power Saving
Windows will now have more aggressive power saving settings by default compared to before to save power when the system is idle.
In addition, if you are disabling Sleep, Microsoft wants to know: why? (Post in the feedback hub). Microsoft aims to improve the Sleep feature of the OS, so if you are doing it due to issues, then this is a good time to share your problems with Microsoft in detail, and hopefully, over time, these will be fixed.

  • New Task Manager
    task-manager1.png

    Oh yes!
yes yes yes! Your eyes are not fooling you! No optical illusions! Task Manager now has Dark theme! And also improved layout of tabs, which is better fitting with Windows 11 look.

New Feature of Task Manager - Efficiency mode.
When you notice a program that is consuming high resources for your system and would like to limit its consumption, you can right-click on it and set it to "Efficiency mode", and now the system will give priority to other apps which will lead to faster foreground responsiveness and reduce system power consumption.
If the option is not available (grayed out), then this means that this is considered a "core" process of Windows, and your experience will be affected.

  • New PowerShell module to provision language and language related features
(Read source link for full details)

Wait wait wait wait... you think it's done?

The company just got started!

What's improved?

File Explorer:

  • File preview in folders is back! Unlike Win7/8/10, it only shows 1 file, but at least you know if the folder is empty or not with ease, and gives you an idea what is inside.
    file-explorer-folder-previews.png

  • When sharing a file and picking "Outlook", you can now compose your email and send it directly, and not switch to Outlook
You will need to download/install from the Store: Outlook Desktop Integration, for this feature to work.

Taskbar
Don't have a heart Attack now.. you hear me! Well... read me! No heart attack!

  • Drag and Drop support
Yes, Drag and Drop support on the task bar finally arrived!

  • Shared Windows indicator
If you are using Teams in a meeting, and share a window/app. The window/app icon in the Task bar will now have a red highlight around it.
    Like so:
    screenshare2.png

  • Color profile changing from the Quick Action panel. Introduced in Windows 10, but was lost when Win11 was released, is that you can have a button to switch between your device color profiles. As you tap/click on it, it will cycle through the different supported color profiles that has been registered. Please note that this applies only to embedded display devices, not desktop displays (unless the manufacture offers drivers that will add support for this, but lol! You know how it goes)
    color-profile-quick-settings.png

  • A Cast icon will appear at the lower-left corner of the taskbar to show you are casting (WIN + K)
    cast-taskbar-icon.png

  • The charging battery indicator icon has been changed. Users complained that on mobile devices, that due to the plug icon showing on top of the battery, it was hard to determine the current battery level when the meter was low. So, Microsoft changed the plug with a lightning bolt.
    battery.png

Search

  • Optimizations. Microsoft has made search feature, when looking for an app or settings be faster and more accurate.

You want more?

3jgukd.png.e9609cf6ece3a5bc4802e0a11edadfa1.png

Alright.. alright.. alright... Cheeses....

Windowing

  • Snap group thumbnail preview visuals now include the desktop wallpaper to better differentiate a window and a layout set.
    2022-02-02-7.png

  • Improved animations transitioning between snap states:
    More fluid, less janky
    snap-window-animations.gif

  • Rotating a device between portrait and landscape orientation is now snappier and more responsive.

  • Reduced the number of notification sounds that play when you connect and disconnect docks and monitors.

  • It is now easier to move your cursor and windows between monitors, by letting your cursor jump over areas where it would previously get stuck.
his behavior is controlled in settings with System > Display > Multiple displays > Ease cursor movement between displays.

  • Small changes to the snapping options under System > Multitasking to help simplify them and make them easier to understand.

Graphics

  • Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) has been improved. Currently (before this build), DRR was limited to scrolling in Office and when inking (to reduce latency) (this feature obviously applies to laptops/tablets running Windows 11 with a 120Hz or more). Now, it applies to the cursor. As you move it, it will boost to 120Hz, and drop down when you stop. This will make the system feel more responsive on those device, Microsoft says. Edge Canary now support DRR feature as well. Go to: edge://flags/#edge-refresh-rate-boost-on-scroll to enable it. It will eventually come to the official release of Edge.

  • Windows HDR Calibration app is coming. This will allow you to improve color accuracy and consistency on your HDR display. The app can found under the settings  panel: System > Display > HDR. Note: The app is not ready to be release yet!

  • Windowed Gaming Optimizations: windowed games gets some love! Under System > Display > Graphics > Change default graphics settings (under the Settings panel), you'll have the option to enable this new optimization mode. This mode adds Auto HDR and Variable Refresh Rate support to games running in windowed mode, and reduces latency. You can also exclude some games if you have some games having issues with this feature. This of course, only affects DirectX games.

Honestly I wish they would remove the recommended from the start menu you when you turn off recommendations. It stands out as an annoyance to me. 🤷‍♂️

Not cool. [rhetorical] what is I cant get internet, will it not let me use the device? Dumb.

I know that is over reacting but still.
