This is my question^

maybe because it's fun?

I don't understand this.

I disagree, it's boring.

I wouldn't say it's boring, but I fail to see the positive side of them being traps aside from attracting people who would like such a thing. Which I can't imagine is that big of a demographic compared to the rest of potential customers, so it just confuses me. Even beyond the sexual implications.

You see, fans of anime have been through many phases where people really like one stereotype or another...

There was Tsundere back in early 2000s when it was the thing.

Then there was the yandere, jump-started by School Days but only popped up sporatically.

The Trap was really only first introduced as a serious thing(not like Ranma) with OtoBoku...then it began...(I'm including reverse-traps in this too)...shows including Hayate the Combat Butler and Haiyore! Nyaruko-San even throws a bit of "man-service" into it for s**ts and giggles.

We are at a point where Tsundere got boring and is quickly going out of style, while Yandere/Kuudere...etc.(and traps) are more and more becoming the main things.

TL;DR: get used to useless instrument attached to your waifu.

And seriously, don't watch an anime called boku.

(watch Natsuyasumi)

I disagree, it's boring.

It's like Satan gave me his porno collection!

It's like your bitch wanted to have sex but wanted something different; so you just...kept watching it!

--------

But really it's just a bit of variety thrown in for either humor or...heresy.

Anyone who has a sister hates the fact that his sister isn't Kasugano Sora.
Anyone who does not have a sister hates the fact that Kasugano Sora isn't his sister.
I'm not insulting anyone; I'm just being condescending. There is a difference, you see...

How?

I find them to be dull and predictable, what could possibly be fun about them?

A story with Bl is more interesting imo, and the characters don't even bother dressing up.

I'd give a suggestion but the damn name escaped me, I'd say loveless but it's... Eh not sure if I can call it Bl.

Tsundere is dead.  Classic Tsundere anime like Shakugan no Shana has been finished long ago.

Now when you see tsundere, it's mostly annoying...

It totally is.  If only for a few seconds.

I believe traps are made to appeal to people who are insecure about their sexuality...or something. (I don't know how that works, don't ask me)  Apparently LG(but most importantly)BT is a real issue.

Even Steins;Gate throws in a trap just for lulz.  Phone call for "T" in LGBT.

umm ill stay away from BL and Yaoi thank you very much. I forget if loveless fits BL or not aince i got it on its initial US release but its definitively aimed at the female demographic. Something else like that would probably be brothers conflict and MEGANEBU!

Since I backed Under the Dog's kickstarter, I get emails for their updates. You can still give them money via Paypal on their site, but I thought I'd share the FAQ they are releasing currently. It's pretty extensive.

Q: What does this quote mean and who does it represent: "Our enemy is the light of humanity"?
A: The “light of humanity” are the agents themselves and others like them. Since the agents are being forced to exterminate their own kind, sort of the next generation of humanity, then they are effectually killing the future/hope/light of humanity; the way to survival.

Q: Will the story touch on certain moral and philosophical ideologies like other sci-fi series (Neon Genesis Evangelion (the classics), Psycho Pass, Ergo Proxy, Eden its an endless world and etc...) or is it more of a hollywood action thriller that we just watch for fun without too much deep thinking?

A: While there will definitely be action, it is clearly our intention to include those deeper themes as well.

Q: What anime provided influences and inspirations for Under the Dog?
A: Neon Genesis Evangelion, Akira, and Ghost in the Shell.

Q: What was the main aspect of the project that inspired you to move forward with it?

A: That the ‘90’s concept has been kept in stasis all these time. The ideas and characterizations from Akira and Ghost in the Shell of course but also the 90’s Japanese economic bubble burst and the subsequent feelings of generational conflict between the old and the young, who felt the old were taking advantage of them. We want to recreate those elements and restructure them for present day content, which is very important.

Q: How exactly is the creative team going to fit in their ideas for 26 episodes in a 24 minute episode?

A: This is not our intention. The initial OVAs will be prequels to the overall story we would like to tell through UTD which we feel will be best served as a feature length film.

We have been compiling questions from all over the place and first and foremost I think some of the more repeated questions can be satiated with simply reading the product specs. So here they are!

Specs

  • One 24 minute OVA (potentially up to 3 OVAs OR a feature length film with stretch goals)
  • Japanese Voice-Over Professional
  • English subtitles (soft-sub / separate track)
  • German subtitles (soft-sub / separate track)
  • Commentary from the creative team and VO cast
  • Digital files DRM free, distributed by secure download link
  • Video will be in .mov at 1080p
  • Audio will be in stereo .wav (48KHz/24bit) and is recorded at 48KHz/24bit
  • 2.0 channel stereo and 5.1 surround sound
  • Blu-ray/DVD Region-code Free
  • Backers who pledge at the $20 reward tier and higher will also have digital access to any future Under the Dog animations that we produce. That means if we only create the 24 min. OVA, and then we go on (as we plan to) to make a film or trilogy of films, then the backers who pledged here for $20 or more will also be able to download those films!
  • If people still want more details out of this then comment here and we can add them to the list.

Crowdfunding
Q: How is this project being funded?
A: Under the Dog is being funded through Kickstarter primarily and PayPal as a supplement.

Q: My payment did not go through on KS, what can I do if I still want to pledge?
A: See: https://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/backer+questions?ref=faq_nav#Trou We also have a PayPal option available on our site www.under-the-dog.com/en/shop.

Q: My pledge DID go through on KS and I need to cancel or want a refund, how can I do that?
A: We can coordinate refunds but keep in mind that your refund would be less the fees from KS, Amazon, plus any costs for the refund itself.

Q: Is there still a way to contribute even though the Kickstarter has ended?
A: We also have a PayPal option available on our site www.under-the-dog.com/en/shop. We will allow for new Pledges, Upgrades (still in progress), and Add-ons. The reward tiers and add-ons will match what was on KS.

Q: How long will the PayPal option be enabled?
A: We have not yet determined a duration for the PayPal option. If we make a decision on this then we will be sure to inform everyone.

Q: Will you accept other forms of payment (i.e. bitcoin)?
A: We are not set up to do this and no one over here has researched it yet so probably not but if we get the time to look into it then maybe.

Story / Design
Q: Why is the name "Under the Dog" and not “Underdog”?
A: The phrase “under the dog” comes from GREAT3’s song “Under the Dog” with a line that says “Why don't you sleep under the dog if you are so sad” for which the meaning is trying to convey (in translation) the definition we had placed on our KS page: “when one is in a situation so disagreeable that they would wish to rather be "under the dog," a place of dishonor, misery, and filth, in order to escape their current state of affairs.” While the meaning for “underdog” can still apply to the situations the characters will find themselves in, the original meaning comes from very specific elements that are not necessarily tied to "underdog."

Q: Do some of the themes in UTD have anti-American sentiments?
A: If someone thinks they find something as such it was certainly nothing intentional.

Q: What was your inspiration for the story and setting?
A: “Never let me go” by Ishiguro, GREAT3’s song “Under the Dog,” and Nikita.

Q: Are there any cool male protagonist, either as a villain or the good guy?
A: Yes! We have concepts for at least four: Colonel (Junichi) Amagata, who rescued and trained Anthea and now supervises her missions; Robert Raymonds, a BAMF CIA agent investigating corruption within the US unit in Japan; Captain Kamiyama, an agent of the Japanese Ministry of Defense Intelligence Service who is also independently investigating illicit activities within his jurisdiction; Colonel Drayton, a man people know little about but seems to be the focus of multiple ongoing investigations.

Q: Will the show have a bit of humor to counterbalance all the dark stuff that's gonna happen?
A: Even the darkest shows have some aspects of this. It is in human nature to seek relief in this way even in our darkest times. We are not sure how often it will show up but it would serve to fully explore the characters.

Q: How exactly is the creative team going to fit in their ideas for 26 episodes in a 24 minute episode?
A: This is not our intention. The initial OVAs will be prequels to the overall story we would like to tell through UTD which we feel will be best served as a feature length film.

Q: Did Anthea make the suit she wears or is this standard uniform for operatives? And since each character is different do they have or wear different suits to match their specialities?
A: It’s a standard combat suit issued by her unit, however each suit is tuned and customized to each individual.

Q: What is the significance of the number 26 seen on Anthea's hoodie?
A: The number 26 stands for Jiro in a different form of standard Japanese pronunciation. It's Kozaki-san's show of respect for Jiro.

Q: In regards to guns, how are the fights, will a gun make a bullet hole in some ones head or blow their whole head off? Since there are no TV restrictions I assume you have complete freedom on the level of gore. Anyone on the team ever watch anything by Yoshiaki Kawajiri or Go Nagai? Why did you guys feel that the violence had to be that graphic?
A: We’re very aware of the anime these guys have made and we won’t have any restriction to violence whatsoever. Action anime is very much Masahiro Ando’s style and that incorporates a bit of violence but ultimately it will serve the setting and the story of desperation.

Q: What is the content rating?

A: You can expect a bit of graphic violence, mature themes such as desperation and the loss of hope, as well as some sexuality, possibly language. We have a provisional M +15 rating from the AU Classification Board and we would expect a rating somewhere between PG-13 and R for the US.

Animation
Q: Will UTD feature the works of any known animators/BG artists?
A: We already feature very famous animators and BG artists. They have already worked on our trailer!

Q: Will you try to get great sakuga animators like Yutaka Nakamura on this?
A: Not specifically, no.

Q: Any confirmed key-animator (原画) names that can be given?
A: Not in an official sense… but they’ve worked on Ghost in the Shell!

Q: How much of the animation will be done by Kinema Citrus and Orange Co.? Will in-betweens be done by another studio?
A: All of the animation will be done by Kinema Citrus and Orange Co.

Q: What can we expect of the animation quality?
A: The quality of the trailer is reflective of the final product.

Q: How do you feel about using 3D CG to animate vehicles? Does it help cut costs and save time significantly?
A: 3D CG really helps the production of hard material scenes like bikes etc. It will play a key part in reducing the budget and make those scenes look much more believable than hand drawn. We’ll make sure that those scenes will have the same look and feel to the hand animated scenes so they are not obtrusive.

Production
Q: What, above all else, makes UTD unique?
A: That we will focus on the global anime community and not just Japan and we have used crowdfunding to establish a direct link between creators and fans. We want creative freedom and we want to intermingle that with input from the people that love what we do, from wherever they are in the world.

Q: What is the breakdown of the $580k that was set for the KS campaign? could you explain in detail on what takes such a large amount of money?
A: The breakdown of the budget is on the KS main page and it details that of that $580k, only 40% was meant for the actual animation production which in reality is insufficient. The CIA team has actually fronted much of the initial funds to get this project off the ground. The other percents were: 30% for backer rewards (production, warehousing, shipping, etc.), 15% for pre-production costs already incurred, 5% operational costs, 5% to Kickstarter fees, and the last 5% to Amazon Payment fees. By way of comparison for other anime Kickstarters, Little Witch Academia 2 asked for $150k for 15 minutes of animation and Kick-Heart asked for $150k for 10 minutes of animation. Anime is expensive to make.

Q: What's the breakdown of how the $100k spent to make the trailer were used?
A: The trailer itself doesn’t take 100,000USD, we’ve also included designs, story, sound etc. in the budget as well which surpasses the content of the trailer.

Q: How many episodes will there be?
A: With our initial goal on the Kickstarter we will produce one OVA. There are stretch goals for up to two more episodes and our ultimate goal is to create the world of UTD in a film trilogy. Ultimately, it will depend on the funding level that we reach.

Q: Are there plans for a series or feature should UTD prove successful?
A: We love to make it into an OVA series, of at least 45 mins + per OVA then make it into a trilogy of feature films.

Q: How will UTD be distributed?
A: While we have no definitive plans at this point for digital or physical distribution, but we are in discussions with a few digital distributors. At the very least, we will have an option on our site for people to purchase either digital or physical copies. For backers, digital copies will be sent via a secure download link in email and physical copies will be mailed. This will happen close to the time of the OVA release around late-2015.

Q: If you guys were going to make merchandise what type of merchandise would you sell shirts, poster etc.?
A: Probably whatever we see there is interest in.

Q: Will there be any additional subs/dubs?
A: We will be offering Japanese VO and English and German subtitles with our initial release and if we have the budget we will incorporate more based on interest.

Q: Is the trailer from scenes of the first OVA?
A: The trailer was created specifically for the KS campaign. Work on the actual OVA has not begun yet.

Q: How long do you think it will take to make the first episode?
A: If we aim to make only the single 24 minute OVA then we could potentially be done mid-2015. If things go as planned then we could get two OVAs by late-2015.

Q: Will there be more livestreams?
A: We hope so! And as we get used to them we will be better prepared for them also.

Q: What can we expect in the pipeline for the project from now on?
A: We will keep people updated on the pledge progress as PayPal giving kicks in and how it pertains to stretch goals, we will continue to do interviews and provide press releases the the media, we will also provide more content updates for the OVA and rewards as developments are made. The website will also continue to make upgrades and there will be polls for people to vote on, developer diaries, and special sneak peaks.

Q: What kinds of things will you be able to do now that you're free from the controls of a Production Committee. You mentioned that the production team had a new form of freedom when making UTD. What does that entail? Do they have more free reign to put what they want into the animation?
A: We absolutely have more free reign to do what we want. This is practically unprecedented. The most important thing is that we have retained two things and gained one. We have kept our creative freedom so there will be no pandering so to speak, only us making what we think is cool and exciting. We have kept our rights to the content and IP so we are free to make whatever other deals we find enticing such as licensed products and additional works that help build our the world of UTD. Most importantly, we have gained a direct connection to our fans and supporters. We hope this will evolve into a symbiotic relationship where we create, receive input, and adapt together. Thank you all for this wonderful opportunity!

Q: Are you planning to make crossovers for both Project phoenix and Under The Dog?
A: For Project Phoenix we will have Anthea's outfit for Sylrianah. We have not decided on anything for UTD yet.

Q: Do you guys have any voice actress and actors in mind at the moment? Will you please consider [...] as one of the voice actors/actresses?
A: We do not have anyone specific in mind just yet but we will undergo an audition process and actors/actresses are welcome to bid for the roles. We will then provide sound bytes of the audition for backers to vote on. For specific requests, we shall see who wants to be part of the project.

Q: Any plans for a production documentary?
A: We do not have plans for an official/professional documentary but we will have intermittent developer diaries and commentaries.

Q: What were you guys going to do if you didn't reach the kickstarter goal?
A: If we did not meet our goal on KS we had a few options available to us. I think the most likely is that we would have taken on some investors at the cost of revenue and then relaunch another campaign at a lower budget. This would have put us in the hole further but it would have enabled us to create the project. Thanks to all of our backers it did not come to that!

Q: Will we be getting an OST teaser or track released before the film comes out?
A: We don’t know yet. This all depends on the pledging levels that we reach and scope of the project since this isn’t fully decided until then.

Part 3 arrives tomorrow.

What is sarcasm anyway?

Higher humor and a form of irony.

I'm not sure why but that concept seems to be nonexistent in amimu if you've ever noticed.
