1080p 240hz or 1440p 165hz?

cfn

I play Rocket League competitively, but also enjoy playing other games such as COD, Warzone, and ARK Survival Evolved.

I have a r7 5800x with a 3080.

If you play rocket league competitivly, probably the 240, that will also be good for a cod game.

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

Depends on what you prefer. The difference of 1080p to 1440p is pretty noticeable (78% more pixels). However the jump from 165hz to 240hz barely registers to the eye, even in highly competitive games.

Are you competitive enough where you think 240 Hz will make a difference for you? My vote is for 1440p, especially if you are looking at a screen size larger than ~24 inches.

Be sure to QUOTE or TAG me in your reply so I see it!

the jump barely registers for some people, some can tell the diffrence between 165 and 144 consistently, and 200 vs 240 consistently.

1080p 240hz , you get better frames and better refresh rate , 1080 is the same good looking as 1440

Personally, I think the difference between 1080 and 1440 is much starker and more immediate, and impressive, than the difference between 165hz and 240hz.

I mean, how many games are you going to play where you can either;

A) attain 240fps

or

B) need it anyway

I'd much rather settle for 165hz and take the jump to 1440p.

Believe me, it's much more impressive seeing games run at at that resolution than it is seeing an extra 70-80fps (that's if you can even tell the difference between, say, 160fps and 240fps...most people can't).

I don't think you'll be at any real disadvantage playing at 165hz on Rocket League - but that's just my opinion.

Screen size will be a factor, too... too big a screen & 1080p will look grainy; too small a screen & stuff may have you reaching for a magnifying glass on 1440p.

24-27" for 1080p, 27-32" for 1440p.

I frequently edit any posts you may quote; please check for anything I 'may' have added.

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

To be honest I would have to disagree. For me I could barely tell the difference between a high quality 1080p ips display vs a high quality 1440p ips display but I definitely notice the difference between 144hz and 240hz. Can't say 165hz vs 240hz but I would assume it would be fairly the same. Anyways for first person games with alot of fast movements high refreshrate is super noticeable. Compare this to something like an rts or other games like it and you likely won't notice as much of a difference. I would imagine rocket league would be super useful to have the extra hz as its easier to see things while making fast movements that would be hard to see at 165hz.

Cant really answer that question without a budget.

I mean ..why not both.

The Acer predator XB273U GX is 240hz  native, 270hz with DSC enabled, 1440p, fast IPS panel ~$700 iirc.

Alternatively u can get

The Gigabyte AORUS FI27Q-X for ~ $600 ..not quite as good as the Acer but close. 240hz 1440p IPS.

And ofc you have the Odyssey G7 ~$700, G9 $1000+, and Neo G9 $1000+,  very fast VA panels. 2560 x 1440, and 5120 x 1440,  all 240hz .

CPU: Intel i7 3930k w/OC & EK Supremacy EVO Block | Motherboard: Asus P9x79 Pro  | RAM: G.Skill 4x4 1866 CL9 | PSU: Seasonic Platinum 1000w Corsair RM 750w Gold (2021)|

VDU: Panasonic 42" Plasma | GPU: Gigabyte 1080ti Gaming OC & Barrow Block (RIP)...GTX 980ti | Sound: Asus Xonar D2X - Z5500 -FiiO X3K DAP/DAC - ATH-M50S | Case: Phantek Enthoo Primo White |

At some point it's not about motion clarity anymore, but lower input lag. There are diminishing returns after 144Hz, but the jump to 240Hz is still noticeable even though it's not as big as 60 to 144 for example.

I personally cannot tell a difference on my PG35VQ between 144Hz and 200Hz when it comes to clarity. But i can feel the difference if the game allows the fps to push up to 200. Even in non-competitive games.

However i'd say rocket league, while a faster game, is not as sensitive to latency as shooters like valorant or cs:go, so based on only this game i wouldn't recommend spending much budget on a 240Hz refresh rate.

I'd personally recommend to shop in this order:

- entry point for good monitors is around $200 for good 1080p 144Hz monitors

- if you have a higher budget (around $300-450) good options in the 1440p 144Hz segment come up

- if you have even more budget (around $600), then good options at 4K 144Hz or 1440p 240Hz become available

Judging from your specs (5800X and 3080) i'd guess you're not too limited on budget, in which case the MSI MAG274QRF-QD is a great allrounder monitor. Definetly fast enough for rocket league and very impressive specs for it's price range. Just not really an HDR monitor, but that's to be expected from any monitor under $1500.

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

I mean, if that's your experience that's fine.

I just found everything looked so much more detailed and nuanced jumping from 1080 to 1440.

I have a 1440-144 monitor and a 4k-60 monitor and I'd take the lower resolution in that case to achieve the 144hz refresh and subsequent (potential) frame rate increase.

But, that's because I feel 1440 is the sweet spot for my rig, and 4k isn't.

I think it's important to try and pair your computer with the panel that gives you the best overall experience...do you know what I mean?
