On Weibo (a Chinese media platform) official account for Samsung Exynos confirmed that the next-gen Exynos will support ray tracing technology. This likely means that the chip will be capable of hardware acceleration of ray tracing to some degree. The RDNA2 GPU in Exynos 2200 is now rumored to feature 384 Stream Processors, which means 6 Compute Units and assuming that the design is similar to desktop discrete GPUs and this mobile implementation of the architecture, with 6 Ray Accelerators.

My thoughts

Okay first thing: The picture that was shared by Samsung is for reference only (taken from an online image stock), Ray Tracing absolutely does not add burning cars to any scene. Second thing: Ummm, I'm not sure how Ray-tracing would perform on a mobile device or even WHY anyone would want it on a mobile device. Ofc, there's the rumour that it'll be used in a Samsung Laptop, where I guess that makes a little bit more sense but still. Well, it's something that's likely going to happen and one I am certain LMG will take a look at should this be real and should this be true. But well, we'll have to wait and see.

If it doesn't work on pokemon tcg for the gameboy I'm not interested

Given that mobile devices are bandwidth constrained, Ray Tracing on phones actually makes sense. Shadow maps on mobile are excessively expensive due to lack of bandwidth, however, ray traced shadows only requires compute power. Close range ray traced shadows at 1/2 or 1/4 resolution (heck, can probably get away with 1/8 or smaller on mobile) should certainly be doable, and possibly be cheaper than using shadow maps. 
 

Ray Trace units can also save space by running pre-calculated lighting during loading, rather than keeping pre-baked data on device storage. Don’t need real-time speed to pull this off.

"dynamic lights", get some ray tracing.

Considering this is more than 5 times less compute units than 6600XT, while being intended to drive same resolution, i just don't see it perform well. I also don't expect there to be many - if any - mobile games with ray tracing support.

newer unity titles might be able to, not sure where unity is on their mobile front

This is a really important step for Samsung. Rumors are, they will drop Snapdragon for the S22 line-up. So they will most likely use a raytraced UI to distract from the fact that battery life is atrocious. 😉

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if it performs really poorly. Not even AMD's desktop ray tracing is that good, so I don't have high hopes for their mobile offering.

You mean the ~420 euro device that isn't even released yet and requires carrying around yet another device, which is too big to fit in my pockets?

Yeah... I think smartphones still have their place in the gaming market.

Don't forget that mobile games in general tend to be much simpler, graphically speaking, than PC games. Says the person who plays Genshin Impact on PC at 4k on 55" display. 😄
