Upgrading from an i3-6100/review my build

just wanting to upgrade my cpu for a little better performance. not sure what to get, I play games like Skyrim and Destiny 2, and i stay around 60 fps with adequate settings but it dips down to 55-50 fps fairly often and i want to avoid lowering the settings from where they're at. I've been looking at an i5-6500, just wanted to get another opinion about it or any advise about the other parts of my build, since theirs no way i can afford a better GPU at the moment lol.

Build:

Motherboard: Asus b150m-a d3

CPU: i3-6100

Ram: corsair vengeance 2x8gb 1600mhz ddr3

          A-data 2x4gb 1600mhz ddr3

GPU: XFX Radeon RX 580 4gb

can you tell us your budget? it might be more economical to sell your mobo & cpu and get new, better ones (I'd recommend the 10400f)

I mean, you'll likely get improvements, but don't expect miracles. You've got an aging system and it's going to perform as such. I'd see if you can lower some settings and get the results you want before dumping more money into the platform, unless the 6500 is quite cheap.

There were some motherboards that allowed you to use DDR3 with 6th gen CPUs. A 6700 is very rarely ever worth the money people ask for them.

6th gen had both DDR3 and DDR4 memory controllers on it, so it was up to the motherboard manufacturer to pick which they wanted to use. Most boards were DDR4 for the extra performance, but there were a couple that went DDR3 to allow people to save money on RAM and just carry it forward.

As for the CPU, if you can find a 6500 for a good price ($50-60) it would be a great pick. It really comes down to what price you can find stuff at, because if you can find a 6700 non-k for like $20 more it would be well worth it.

oh yeah, i forgot 6th gen supports both ddr3 and ddr4 for a second there

but what's stopping them from just selling the cpu, mobo and ram to get a new set? if their budget accommodates

There were actually a couple of weirdo Skylake era boards with slots for both DDR3 and DDR4.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. Watch this space for further truths people need to hear.

yeah i figured it wouldn't be a miracle lol, honestly I'm surprised this thing even runs as well as it does. this whole build has been pieced together starting with an AMD a8-6500 with a mini ITX board and like 4 gigs of ram from just scavenging old business computers. i'm more than satisfied with the current setup, i would just like to stablilize the fps, even just a little since i mostly play competitively.

I'll have a pretty large budget in a month or two where I could potentially make a decent build but its not something i want to throw a chunk of change at just yet.

Maybe find an i7-6700 office PC, swap the CPUs, and sell off the other one or use for another purpose?

Something like this

https://www.ebay.com/itm/274949450909?hash=item400443ac9d%3Ag%3AZOcAAOSwLh1hQ4Rl&LH_BIN=1

And then sell off the OEM PC for $150-200?

thats the other idea I had but its not like i'm disappointed with the current setup, i just want to try and stabilize the fps as much as i can before I go full send on building an actual gaming rig in the future, you know trying not to blow money on something I don't actually need vs want.

The 6700k used is almost 200 on ebay, not the best value beacause the 10600k is slightly over 200 and has 6 cores and 12 threads, he won't need to buy a new mobo for the 6700/6700k but still. But if he could even flip the office PC for 80-90 bucks after the cpu swap or has another purpose for it , an 8 thread cpu for well under 200 while avoiding a mobo upgrade isn't bad at all.
