Full update from Hardware Unboxed channel.

 

 

Ken Hong, Head of Global Corporate Communications at LG Electronics, called us and we chatted for 15 minutes about yesterday’s video. As a result, LG will be implementing significant change to how they handle monitor reviews.

 

Here is his statement on the matter:

 

"As discussed, we're putting into place the following steps to ensure that something like that doesn't happen again:

1. All embargoes will be discussed and agreed to in advance of the review product shipping;

2. Format of video (independent review vs paid promotion, if that option is available) will be agreed to in advance;

3. LG's objectives and/or expectations will be communicated to you in advance for you to accept/decline;

 

And lastly, LG's monitor marketing team will no longer be utilizing the services of LG CNS for content creator outreach. Not sure who that will be going forward so until then there may be some confusion! "

 

In addition to this, Hong told us that once it’s agreed that a video will be a review, there will be no further interference in the process. Hong himself said he would be accountable to ensure this action is adhered to.

 

This is a big positive step for not just our LG monitor reviews, but hopefully for all reviewers dealing with LG worldwide. However, ultimately it’s just a statement at this point, and we’ll be sure to keep LG accountable so their words turn into actions.

call me cynic, but to me that simply means if you dont play by our rules there will be no free monitors for you to review ~

So how did they handle this before, and this was considered normal for them?

And only monitors? As discussed in the LTT stream, they have and will always get some weird communication from brands.

But that some things seems like they have gotten a similar response from LG before, similar to HU only less pushy maybe? and not involving payment.

 

So I guess they are going to keep doing this, and find the ones they can use or maybe adjust monitor "guidelines" and being less open about those they pay?

Basically so that what happened here with the switching up of embargoes doesnt happen again.

Suprised we dont see this more often with smaller channels, ofcourse its a bad thing but.. Bet some people dont have much of a choice, even if they dont want to be the "bad" guy in that situation.

Targeting a smaller channel with bribes like these is probably not worth the investment. If all the large tech channels slam your product, Jimmy Whatshisface's backyard tech review channel probably isn't going to sway public opinion to cause someone to rush out and buy the product. And if that was the only positive coverage, it'd rightfully cast doubt over either the competence of the reviewer or fuel speculation about bribery. Unlike many areas, tech is is something that you can review with a degree of factual data backing up your opinion of it (methodological errors and flawed interpretations notwithstanding). 

 

And on the flip side, if a smaller channel were to be a target of a bribery attempt and made that public, the fact that their reach is so far smaller directly means that you are less likely to hear about it in the first place, unless it gets picked up and amplified by one of the bigger fish in the pond.

I seem to remember that bribery to journalists was the cause of a lot of untrusted PC Game reviews back in the late 1980's. Just appears where there's a bag of gold some reviewers can be bought. So it is kind of unusual to have a reviewer to demonstrate integrity and say 'hang on, we just been approached to lie for cash'.
