How bad of a backlight bleed is this?

Then it’s normal. Cheap panels are cheap panels, even my (slightly) more expensive IPS panels have noticeable bleed

Even high-end monitors have backlight bleed and IPS glow. It's just something you cannot get around no matter how high-quality your production process is. It's an inherent issue with LED-backlight-monitors.

@OP Looks fine to me. In dark rooms you should try to get the brightness down. This will make backlight-bleed and IPS glow less noticeable. Just an example: On daytime i use my monitor at a setting of 100 brightness, which results in around 500 nits. On nighttime i use it on 23, which is around 150 nits. Makes it more comfortable to your eyes and the image will look better at night.

Is this normal for a budget ips panel? The monitor is a Viewsonic XG2405.

Looks about normal to me. Is it bothersome on a color image?

To be honest, it is only noticeable when in dark scenes in a movie or game.

Well, I suppose you're right  My other monitor, the one which is next to this one has almost zero backlight bleed, but that one is a Dell UltraSharp U2414h. The quality of the panel is outstanding but the refresh rate is 60hz and the contrast in my opinion is worse than the Viewsonic.

Interesting. My MacBook has NONE, and unless there’s something I’m not aware of it’s an IPS panel. Maybe Apple is just picky and rejects all but the best panels, or they designed it specifically to mitigate the issue

Don't know, never had a mac. But every LED monitor i've had until now has had backlight bleed or IPS glow to some degree. Some more, some less.

Yes, It is fine, it probably looks better in person than on camera, but if you want to see what no backlight bleed looks like, look at the monitor on the right.

One of the best I have ever seen, just beautiful.

A lot of people complain about backlight bleed from LCD displays (I can see why), most of the time it is a normal and acceptable amount for what the product is, but if they don't know, they can always ask (that's cool), but if they want no BLB, well... One of the solutions may be from almost 20 years ago.

To be fair, Retina MBP's have always had screens that are pretty goddamn killer. Comparing them to regular monitors is usually about as brutally unfair as drag racing a 2003 Grand Prix GT with a jet dragster. 😛

Agreed. The screen in my MacBook is just beautiful, and the fact that they’ve been doing them like that for almost a decade is incredible. It’s not the highest resolution but any more than it is in this size is just a waste, color is great, viewing angles are fantastic, brightness is good, and just giving it a good stare it looks nice to the eyes.

To be fair, not all CRTs displayed inky blacks especially if you had brightness cranked to a reasonable level. Hell, a lot of them didn't.
