The same build today costs 59% more than built 3 months ago

MigasTigas

Back in December 2020 I made a list of components (https://pcpartpicker.com/list/LYdWBc) and after three months I revisited to see how much it changed.

Down below is the price changes, where we can see that, obviously, the GPU increased an incredible 1.6x while the remaining parts kept somewhat the same.

This is why charts / data are always horribly cheated in media.

Was the conclusion wrong?  No, no it wasn't.

But, outside of the GPU?  The price flux was about 20$ on 600+?  Which is just random market flux.

Proper conclusion:  GPU Prices are f$#(%d and everything else is mostly fine.

You can always 'cheat' with such comparisons,  I bet with different parts the hike could be a lot higher (or maybe even lower)

For example in my perception at least RAM got a bit more expensive,  cases seem also mostly overpriced, in some regions CPU's too, etc.

But yeah of course the main thing will be GPU's inflating the costs.

I'd personally look for a gold+ rated PSU at 750 to 900 watts. Modular and single 12v rail.

Even if you only plan to stuff that PC with a mid-tier GPU and CPU TODAY, in 5 years you might be interested in something needing much more juice, and PSUs are most efficient at 30-70% of their load to getting more than you need is good anyway.

Overspening on a PSU model that has been proven reliable and is beyond your needs is not only good sense for saving you money in the long term, but it is also the best option for the environment since PSUs make up *THE* biggest chunk of a PC's manufacturing-and-use-related greenhouse emissions.

I feel way more inclined to go back to console gaming now. Too bad they don't make enough of them. Why does everyone copy nintendo?

I'm actually pleasantly surprised that it's only the GPU's that really screwed so far. I'm guessing in another 3-6 months the silicon shortage will have made alot more of these components price rise and the price will be 10-20% higher again.

9-12 months is more likely, sadly.  There s wide ranging shortage, it ain't good.
