It's a stupid thing, a vestige of old times to get better use of daylight. With everything lit with lights now it seems almost pointless to me. It also throws my circadian rhythm in the toilet when it changes.

To fully utilise the daylight available to do work, from when there's no electric lights yet or something

I don't like it either, even though I'm not affected by it, keeping track of time with my friends and family in another country is a hassle though

I'd settle for year-long DST.

So it was easier to change the entire damn standard of time, than for people to simply wake up earlier/later? It’s about as backwards as it gets.

Mmm, i guess someone decided changing the time is easier than shifting schedules forward or backwards by one hour

Imagine business hours that changes with the season, that's almost as inconvenient to the people as changing the time itself

And different shop may change differently depending on if they're affected by the sunlight needed, so it's overall more messy I guess?

Regardless, it's time to ditch DST, imo

People may argue that it's still beneficial to using less light or whatever, but please...

It's such a stupid thing!

I live on latitude 59+, in winter (non pandemic years) it's dark when I go to work and dark when I go home from work.

In summer no matter if on DST or standard time the sun is up long before I get up and sets late in the eavning.

Only time you notice any different between the two time counting systems is a couple of weeks late winter/early spring and in theory a couple of weeks in autumn (but usually the sky is overcast most of autumn so it doesn't matter that much anyway).

I would prefer to always be on standard time (mainly because it follows the sun better here since I'm in the middle of our time zone), but it doesn't matter that much just stop switching back and forth. If my entire country settles on always be on DST I'm OK with that.

The worst switch every year is always from standard time to DST.

JUST STOP SWITCHING.

The state right next to mine doesn’t have daylight savings so it can be rather interesting if you live along the state line.

Also I have an exam the day after it starts so that sucks.

Where I am in Australia we observe DST. It's great. I like it only starting to be daylight at 5am & I like it only starting to get dark at 8pm. Also the state my state borders with doesn't observe DST so it's even better as I live in a border town & work in same town where DST is observed, but if I go over into the next state where it's not I go back an hour in time & it means shops & such are open an hour longer for me.

Yes, PLEASE.

I'd love year-long DST - I honestly don't give a hoot about how dark it is when I'm going to work, but I would like some extra day light after leaving work, specially in winter.

it was the amercians fault!!!

Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea in 1784.

it started getting traction around the 1900s

it was to save on candles and maximise the light days.

It made sense then but not now with the world being 24/7

You probably have not lived thru an energy crisis...

Yes, it was some of the baby boomers that decided to try and conserve electricty, so that the future is better for the next generation.

I lived through the Texas grid falling apart a few weeks ago, does that count as an energy crisis? The boomers are the ones that refused to winterize our grid over the last few decades, so I’m not giving them any credit for energy management right now.

I'm pretty sure every single person in a position to do something about our grid problems is a boomer or older.

DST is way older than the energy crises anyway, and we don't really need it anymore.

This is getting perilously close to politics. I'd suggest maybe steering this back towards the original topic, if anything, to reduce the workload on the staff.

I believe that Washington and California have measures to do away with DST, did those already get voted on? I'm curious if they passed or not.
