Nvidia RTX 3070 with 16GB of VRAM

Summary

 

A Russian modder VIK-on has modded RTX 3070 by adding 16GB of VRAM, previously in January he posted a video on his YouTube channel with 16GB of RTX 2070. Now he done the same thing with RTX 3070 and got some really got result, although Nvidia driver didn't properly support it but he was able to get working from EVGA's Precision X software.

Strangely enough, this fix completely resolved any crashing in 3D applications, and the card was fully operational.

Perhaps this bug is a countermeasure from Nvidia to prevent AIB partners from selling 16GB models, since that SKU technically isn't supposed to exist. More likely, the firmware and drivers simply aren't tuned to work properly with the different memory configuration. This proves the RTX 3070 core (GA104) can support a 16GB configuration, but this hardware hack isn't the same as official support from Nvidia

Presumably, this is why Nvidia dunked the 16GB route and stuck with 8GB of VRAM for the RTX 3070. Rumors of a future 16GB RTX 3070 Ti persist, however, and such a card would make mods like this unnecessary.

For now, it's cool to see a fully functioning RTX 3070 with double the VRAM. Never underestimate the power of modders.

 

My thoughts

It would be good if Nvidia released RTX 3070 with 16GB of VRAM as 4K is becoming a new trend among gamers and 16GB would be sweet spot for it as 3070 as already a pretty powerful card.

Silly Nvidia. Also kudos to this dude who just did this on his own and it works. Pretty impressive

Pretty cool but not surprising. I'm actually surprised modders haven't been doing this before. I'm not saying soldering a chip on a circuit board is trivial but it's not like it needs new software code or anything to make it work.

Considering the same could be done with Voodoo2, and with some of Nvidia's GPU having double the vRAM in laptops than the desktop counterparts. The capability is probably there just in case an OEM wants a mobile GPU with a marketing point that makes it seem non-gimped.

Stupid waste of resources. Especially in these times when we have shortages of DRAM chips. And they cram them pointlessly on cards that totally don't need it just for lolz. Literally. Where RTX 3080, for some fucked up reason only has 10GB. The only card that would somewhat make sense to sport 16GB while not ruining the RTX 3090 benefits directly as it still has less memory.

IMHO I think nVidia was segmenting the market. What good is a high-end GPU if running at higher resolutions are kneecapped with an insufficient amount of VRAM?

The current graphics card from Nvidia have enough RAM for games today. But not enough for tomorrow games. Nvidia gets to sells more GPUs if you are VRAM limited. Reduced the number of people keeping the GPU for long.

Nvidia makes their own GPUs, they get to decide the needed bandwidth to implement.

Hot air solder rework station. just lather on enough flux to make Louis proud, heat things up, take of the chip, repeat the flux thing, replace with new higher capacity chip.

Wow! That's insane! I can't believe that modder did to this video card to make add extra VRAM to circuit board. Nice work!

 

 

I think next year for Nvidia company is maybe going to make new Nvidia RTX 40 Series for on next generation of graphic video cards will have PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0.

 

Like RTX 4050/Ti, 4060/TI, 4070/Ti, 4080/Ti and maybe 4090/Ti. Can't wait for news about new graphic video cards when it come out soon in near future.
