Another generation of gamer phones - Nubia Red magic 6 / Pro announced

williamcll

nubia red magic 6 series 1

Other than the same internal hardware like every other 888 equipped phones, both phones come with the signature integrated CPU fan and a 165Hz screen as well as Headphone jack. Pro model can go up to 18GB/512GB if you can affiord the 1K USD price tag.

Quote

The company announced the Red Magic 6 and 6 Pro in China with both touting 6.8-inch 2,400 x 1,080 AMOLED displays that can refresh at up to 165Hz. The screen can also scale down to 30Hz to save battery. Joining this cocktail is a 500Hz touch sampling rate (for single touch, 360Hz for multi-touch), which should improve the phone’s response time while gaming.

nubia red magic 6 series 2

Power is provided by a 5,050mAh battery on the standard Red Magic 6 with a 4,500mAh unit on the Pro model. Oddly enough, the larger battery is paired with 66W charging. The Red Magic 6 Pro, however, gets 120W charging. Nubia notes this can charge the Pro’s battery from 0% to 50% in five minutes.

While the Nubia Red Magic 6 line is getting a global launch later this month, it’s already available in China. The standard model in the 8GB RAM/128GB storage config retails for 3,799 yuan (~$587). Colorways include Carbon Fiber Black and Cyber Neon. The 6 Pro starts at 4,399 yuan (~$680) for the 12GB/128GB flavor. If cash isn’t a problem, an all-out 18GB/512GB transparent model is available for a dizzying 6,299 yuan (~$1,020).

Thoughts: Promising, though some have reported that the 120W charger seems to degrade the battery very quickly (Nubia have tried to address this by adding extra circuity so that the charger bypasses the battery during high load) so that's a concern for me if I am to consider this phone. A vent cleaning kit would be nice to come by as well.

Specs: Motherboard: Asus X470-PLUS TUF gaming (Yes I know it's poor but I wasn't informed) RAM: Corsair VENGEANCE® LPX DDR4 3200Mhz CL16-18-18-36 2x8GB

CPU: Ryzen 9 5900X          Case: Antec P8     PSU: Corsair RM850x                        Cooler: Antec K240 with two Noctura Industrial PPC 3000 PWM

Drives: Samsung 970 EVO plus 250GB, Micron 1100 2TB, Seagate ST4000DM000/1F2168 GPU: EVGA RTX 2080 ti Black edition

All these fancy high end gamer phones with trash software support. If you'll ever recieve just 1 major OS update and I'd call it a miracle. It's why I can't even put ASUS in my wishlist because they are garbage in this regard. And from what I've heard Nubia is no better. All these Android phone makers just churn out hardware and have no regard for any kind of support. Which, when talking about such "premium" and expensive devices is just bizarre. Imagine if Apple only gave you 1 year of OS updates. Everyone would lose their shit.

Oh they are starting to care. It's just bizarre how long it has taken and is still taking. One would think people would care more. Imagine buying laptop with Windows 10 and then just get 2 builds of it and then get stuck on that forever? That's literally how Android is being operated for YEARS.

I don't really care; I upgrade phones more frequently than it'd matter, as do most of the people I know. It's not the same as a laptop that you'll use for a much longer period of time.

Given upgrade cycles, support matters less to a lot more people these days. And with some of the new phone financing, you're effectively leasing a phone for 2 years with some carriers and then trading it back for a new one, or you can buy out the remaining amount if you truly want to keep it.

That being said, I've never truly understood gaming phones. Maybe I'm more out of the loop, but I've never seen a game for mobile that was ever interesting and demanding enough hardware-wise to play over any other platform.

I'm sitting here trying to find a replacement for my 4YO note 8 it just got a major update and it said that was the last. Any iphone update after 9 months is a hard pass, just slows the iphone down and many other iphone users do the same.

Oh yeah, the same old "updates intentionally slow down iPhones" bullshit. Dude, when did you last use iPhone? Or better yet, have you EVER even used one? Coz everyone repeating this crap are usually those who never even used one or have held one for 10 minutes, but they vaguely heard about the whole Batterygate thing and are wrongly propagating info around it like a gospel.

@dizmo

Yeah, that's what Android users are doing. Though in all fairness, that's what you and your tech nerdy friends are doing. The masses, you know, everyone else doesn't really, they stick with devices for many years. iPhone users stick with same devices for much much longer in general, but there are still people like you and your friends who buy the latest and greatest iPhone every single year. But they aren't the default. They are the outliers.

I don't get playing games on phones. Maybe screen is too small for me, or I've grown out of it. What would be cool is to plug these into a monitor with a wireless keyboard and mouse, and jam some call of duty. Hopefully this shift to ARM will mean phones can now do this with Windows. Awesome.

I actually have very few friends that are into tech. So, not quite accurate.

Do you really believe in having a neglected product? Don’t appeal to the dumb masses.

Do you really think a company is going to put out dozens of phones every year and keep them all updated?
The problem doesn't fall entirely on them, it's also on Google and how difficult they make it to issue updates. Until they have that fixed (which they're working on), then I really couldn't care less; I also don't expect devices to get more than 2 years of updates, and as I swap mine out at most every two years, if not every year, I couldn't care less what it receives after that time, as it doesn't affect me 😉

Android is not a gaming OS, not by a long shot, and at best it's a third or fourth consideration for something to be ported to. Mobile games always get developed for iOS first, or PC games are developed to be portable to iOS. Android is always an after-thought because Android is a pain to develop for, and thus only games built with middleware (eg Unity) ever get ported to Android.

There's so many things "Broken" on Android that it always seems like Google doesn't care about Android either. Like look how far behind ARCore is from ARKit. Samsung has capabilities in their AR implementation that ARCore doesn't have, but nobody supports it because it's not in ARCore.

Until there is a standard "one OS fits all" ARM type of non-Android OS, there will likely never be any incentive for Android devices to not be minimum of minimums. Even high end devices, end up being a waste because those "high end" features go unused.
