What should someone do when this happens? Asking for a friend.

Dennis Hogemann

The GPU die has somehow separated from the PCB, yes.

It's as good as broken.

Though if said friend wants to save the die as a keepsake, they may.

yikes... F's in chat...

but in all seriousness.. nothing you can do unless you can find a specialist who can resolder the BGA contacts back in place. Time to get a new GPU.

You can't even do that, a chuncb of the die is on the cooler!

I could use some help with this!

please, pm me if you would like to contribute to my gpu bios database (includes overclocking bios, stock bios, and upgrades to gpus via modding)

don't say can't.  Just VERY unlikely.

oh, you're right. I took a closer look and you can definitely see the die stuck to it. I had just assumed it was rock hard paste and just looked funky from that.

there is legit zero ways to put the physical die back together since all the connectors are invisible to the human eye, and I highly doubt anyone has the specialized equipment anywhere in the world necessary to physically reconnect billions of transistors that are on a die.

Step 1: Figure out why glue was used instead of thermal paste.

Step 2: Accept that you won't be using that card again.

It kind of looks like the temp sensor went bad, a super high voltage BIOS or thermal throttle didn't kick in. It got hot enough to melt the IHS, and the corners of the TP on the die look like they actually got crispy like in a fire.

How you managed to pull that off, was the thermal paste that old and dry that it became one with the die and the cooler ?

I have no clue ,we were all just in a discord call and suddenly he sends a picture of what had happened and all of us were confused. I feel like thermal epoxy was used or something.

I believe he threw away the pcb but kept the gpu it self and kept it as an ornament.
