3060 low fps

A Friendly N00b

Hey fellas, I was able to snag a MSI Gaming X 3060 to replace my old zotac 2070 extreme amp oc card. When I switched them out the first thing I did was boot up Final Fantasy 14 to see the FPS improvement, however, there was actually a decrease in frames from when I was using the 2070.. what's going on here?

An RTX 3060 is similar in performance to a 2060 Super, sometimes inbetween a 2060S and 2070S.

An RTX 2070 (non Super) will be about the same performance as a 3060, so.. the 3060 wasn't an upgrade.

You downgraded. The 2070 is faster, the 3060 is newer. if you wanted an improvement from a new card, youd be looking at buying a 3060 super or a 3070.

I am actually flabbergasted by how slow the 3060 seems to be.

Corps aren't your friends. "Bottleneck calculators" are BS. Only suckers buy based on brand. It's your PC, do what makes you happy.  If your build meets your needs, you don't need anyone else to "rate" it for you. And talking about being part of a "master race" is cringe. I was under the impression that it would be an upgrade, the clock speeds are more or less the same but the 3060 has more CUDA cores. Why would it be slower?

I got one from a local hardware/tech store, there was a big line in the morning.

Lowkey had no idea this JUST came out. I was thinking of the 10 series vs 20 series, turns out it still follows suit haha

You bought a slower card.  Just overclock it, you might get some gains then.

Overclocking a GPU gives you a 10% fps boost at most

Why wouldn't you do some research and look at real reviews before you went out and spent your money? FOMO I guess. Good thing for Nvidia no reviews of this dud of a card came out before release day!

Unless you got your 3060 near its MSRP and just want to sell your 2070 at an inflated price to get the same performance with some extra cash in hand, this is a pointless "upgrade."

Weeelp. I just heard that it was better than the 2070 and was looking for an upgrade, and most charts I could find were comparisons between the 3060 ti and 2070 super-- I just have the regular 2070. Oh well, I can just sell it or return it. Shame about the lackluster performance.

3060 seems like it's priced pretty okay if you can get at MSRP.

It performs slightly better than the old 2060 Super which was $399. It also has better RTX and DLSS performance.

It performs only slightly slower than the old RX 5700XT, which was around $379 on average. But it also has competent RTX and DLSS, which the 5700XT does not have. It is clearly a better card pretty much all the time.

OP: Did you DDU everything first? I know it's the same family, but it wouldn't hurt to do so.

Additionally, the 2060 Super is slightly faster than the vanilla 2070. Since the 3060 is slightly faster than the 2060 Super, it SHOULD be slightly faster than the old 2070.

It's possible the Driver just hasn't been updated for this game and GPU very well yet.

You were looking at 3060ti reviews? Then bought the base model.

I personally stick to a 40% rule. If it's not 40% faster, or unless you want a special feature, don't get it.

3060 ti should have been named just 3060 and the 3060 should have been the 3050/3050 ti. Change my mind.

K im contemplating upgrading my memory because I have 2x8 @2133 and it throttles. I'm tight on money at the moment, money coming soon but i do want to save what I can. Is sending it with 2x16 @3800 worth it? Like idk what the faster ram impacts. Theres a newish trident z neo 2 x 16 @3800 which is as fast as my mobo supports, but is the value there?

You could prob. OC it to 2666 - depending on your specs. By the way, what are they?

There are some frames you can gain but I do not believe it is worth it unless you can sell your old ram and only go in on the difference.

i7 7700k w/ 280 AIO, Strix RX 480 8Gb, Corsair LPX 2x8, Strix Z270H, 970 EVO.

I have heard the ram speed really matters but i have no experience with the fanciness, I guess I got the bottom of the bin because I could only OC to the increment but it was negligible so its running stock.

There's not much of a market as far as i can tell where I am but I'm sure i can find someone to take it for $50, trident Z neo 2x16 @ 3800 is $250. I'm pretty sure I paid 200 for my 2x8. The identical 2x8 kit is $115.

Well in games like MMOs RAM speed can make a significant difference.

I would absolutely not spend $250 on that memory. It's even possible you could not reach those speeds on the 7700k's IMC.

If you must, you could sell your kit for $50 and get a kit of 3600CL16 for $85 and only be out $35. Even that might be pushing it a bit, though.

All that said, if you're looking at FPS hanging around the Limsa Aetherite crystal...FPS is gonna be shit no matter what you have.

Another thought to piggyback off of @shaz2sxy

Sell the 3060 for a $300 markup

Use that $300 to buy a 5600x

Spend the original $330 you would have spent on the 3060 on a B550 and 16GB DDR4 3600 CL16

Sell the 7700k/ram/mobo for $200

Keep the 2070

CPU matters a lot more in games like MMOs

You just got a huge CPU upgrade for not much $$$

My motherboard supports up to 3866 and with the asus bios I should be able to OC it to 3800. But also, I'm Canadian so that ballistix is CAD150$ because fking markup is ridiculous here. So in your terms, Id sell mine for like $30, the 2 x 16 3800 is.. $330 USD??? First time ever something like that has been cheaper in Canada. Normally using that price, a Canadian estimate would be ~ $400 for the same product.. but here its CAD 250, after seeing Canadian price, makes me think it should be about USD$200 but naw its 330 haha. I think i might snag it. especially if someone messed up the pricing haha

I've confused myself with the math and dollar amounts here already.

Point is, I don't know if spending a lot of money on RAM is going to be worthwhile on that older platform. Especially if the next jump is going to be DDR5 anyway.

Were I you, I'd either sell all of it (new GPU at a markup, old parts at reasonable prices) and keep the drives and 2070.

Spend your money then on a Ryzen 5 3600x with a 3200/3600 memory kit and a decent B550.

Or keep what you have and try to overclock again. The 7700k should be good for 4.7-4.8ghz pretty easily, and the memory you should be able to get to 2400 at least. Or just swap that part out for your typical bargain 3200 kit.
