7920X?! What to know about X299

Hello Everyone, I'm an X99 user, Looking to upgrade to X299, I have deals available for a X299 FTWK by EVGA, and a I9 7920X (12c/24t max of 4.3) But is there anything important I need to know about 7th gen X299, Doesn't it need to be delidded? or isn't that recommended? but 9th and 10th gen are soldered? I have a 700W PSU, so Not worried about power draw, my 5820K can pull ~ 200+ W when OCed, and my RTX 2080 FE doesn't pull a TON like an AIB, I think I'm fine in terms of PSU, I have quad channel memory, so I'm fine there so What I really want to know is if theres a lot about X299 that differs from X99 that I would need to know, or anything I should be reminded of. deals? I would not buy any x299 cpus really. they get outperformed by ryzen 9 3900x by a lot. 

 

but if the "deals" are under what the 3900x and its platform cost sure. I mean it has quad channel memory to help at demanding tasks, but 3900x would still beat it even with dual channel config.

 

also AMD Threadrippers are a thing and better than intel's offerings usually too, if you really like to quad channel.

I did my 7980XE. It was fine out of the box though. Not like it won't run within spec.

Delidding was mainly because I bought it for OCing. There was a large core to core delta.

If they are cheaper than a high end Ryzen combo option (or unless you need the quad channel memory support and PCI lanes), then don't try and waste money on X299 with the performance offerings that are lower than Ryzen.

9th gen is pretty much the same as 7th (or 7000X processors), just with the added addition they used solder. It's not always necessary to delid if you win the silicon lottery. 10th gen is not a Skylake X derivative and based off of Cascade Lake.

435, X299 FTWK and a 7920X.

I'm running a 7920X in my streaming setup right now. More because I had it left over spare than a specific choice. Skylake-X architecture is based off the server equivalent, and one of the changes they made to that makes it relatively worse for consumer type use cases.

 

Gaming: The cache structure makes it behave more like early Ryzen systems when it comes to gaming performance. That is, per clock it seems to do a bit worse than mainstream Intel. It doesn't really make much difference unless you're seeking ultimate fps.

 

Compute: it depends a LOT on the use case. The strengths are obviously you still retain quad channel memory and you also get AVX-512, if any software you have runs that. AVX-512 more or less doubles the FP IPC compared to mainstream Intel and anything from AMD. That the 7920X is monolithic also makes it easier to scale for some compute workloads. The CCX structure of AMD and limited Infinity Fabric speeds makes that much more of a pain for all but trivial parallel scaling tasks.

 

Mine is running stock and temps are fine with a reasonable air cooler like Noctua D15 I'm using. Delid is not required unless you really want to overclock it. Can't comment on the 7920X since I haven't delid it, but my previous 7800X the delid did rather less than expected if you replace with paste, implying they have better contact than on consumer. An improvement was seen going liquid metal though.

One issue I had when deciding between X299 and X399 was X299 was cheaper than AMD's TR lineup. Threadrippers are pricier when you buy a CPU and motherboard together compared to Intel's HEDT chips and motherboards.

Whilst I don't NEED the PCI Lanes, or quad channel memory, considering the pricing of 435? it seems like not a bad deal to add my 4X8gb kit of ram too and move on with my day, I dont quite think theres a 3900X tier that low in pricing?

Theres really no point in buying into x299 unless you need the pci-lanes and can make use of the higher clock speeds of the Skylake-X cpu's relative to 1st and 2nd gen threadripper.

 

Price is also a factor as since threadripper cpus have gone up allot in price since AMD has gained market share and prominance in the enthusiats mind

but you should be able to find second hand 3900Xs around 350-400$. and some decent mobo like b450 pro4 or b550 pro4

Really my fully intent is to Upgrade my CPU in order to get higher FPS on games like Warzone where I'm currently CPU bound alongside streaming Pretty much everything is balling in my PC except my CPU/Mobo at the moment, I'm sure my EISBAER 280 can keep it cool but I think X299 would be one of my best options, but I'm not certain in terms of pricing I can get it for 435$ which is great, but if I can get a 3900x and great mobo for cheaper? I mean from what I know this X299 FTWK isn't a slouch board either

That's a decent price for both CPU and MOBO considering its HEDT. So then, I still stand by what I said earlier and I say go for it if its cheap enough compared to a 3900X and motherboard combo.

The one factor that affected my decision in going TR route. Crazy how much in price they have gone up.

Its not a bad deal.... for someone whose going to use it for it's strengths, if you're going to run MS Office, edit a few videos and play games... (like most people do) it's still not great.

The one factor that affected my decision in going TR route. Crazy how much in price they have gone up. 

Mhm, What would you say should be the LIMIT I would be looking at in a 3900X, I don't have the fastest ram, 3200mghz CL16, two 2x8 ballistix kits, plural, and Im not certain how 2DPC is on ryzen

for gaming? Do not go for x299 platform or threadripper.

 

for warzone cpu like 3700x or 3900x is plenty.

I stream, create tiktoks using Premiere pro, but nothing that specifically requires any HEDT featureset, I just grew up using X99 So thought X299 might be kinda cool to use.

I failed to mention this, but streaming, content creation using Premiere, and being able to find a  3900X alongside price are whats affecting my X299 VS AM4 decision

I don't think you should buy a 3 year old 12 core cpu unless you can utilize all the cores and don't need good ipc. I, like everyone else, would recommend the 3900x or 5900x because they will preform better and are more modern. Unless you have a good deal on the 7920x, I wouldn't buy it.

streaming and gaming are for sure much better with 3900x than 7960x or something. 

it is new at 450$ which is way too much. you can find 3700x new at over 300$

They are still high in price, but considering the CPU/GPU shortages we are facing, that is to be expected. Nothing over the MSRP of the chip and perhaps a 10-20% discount if going NEW.

That is still great for today's needs. I had DDR4-3200 CL16 Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 2x8GB kits(2) and worked great with my 9800X;which I no longer use.

well do you live at USA?

 

if you do there are plenty of website like facebook marketplace or craiglist where you can find those cpus locally.
