put my own server in the datacenter

BardiaMGTGC

i have been looking into getting a server and putting it in a datacenter and stop renting 5-6 vps every month(im just a devops so i dont know much about this side of the market)

after some research looks like there are companies who "rent" server in their datacenters but this is not what i want i dont want to pay monthly/yearly for servers i want to get my owns and buy bandwidth and traffic from the datacenter

are there any datacenters i can put my server with esxi and something like a mikrotik router for natting the one or two ips?

I've not run across any that will allow you to put your own server on their network, it's too much of a risk.

-> Moved to Servers and NAS

A gaming community I belong into had their own server in datacenter. But the catch was one of the members was co-owner of said company.

I don't think they allow colocation of 1 or 2 servers. You'll just have to find some data center near you and give them a phone call.

There are places that do this, but if you're just trying to avoid a monthly cost, it won't help you. You will still pay monthly/yearly to rent the space in the datacenter, even if you own the server. This would likely cost more than just renting someone else's bare metal server and way more than a VPS. It's only a good option if you have a big deployment or need to actually own the hardware.

There are other things to consider too. If you need to issue a hard reboot to the server, you'll have to drive over there, get signed in and escorted to the rack, and physically push the reset button. If you need OOB console access, same thing. If a disk dies, same thing. It's either that, or you would have to pay for remote hands to do it for you if you can't get there. With a VPS, you can usually do that through the VPS provider's control panel, and they would obviously take care of any hardware issues.

I just did this. I colocated a server in a data center. Im paying for 1u of space, 1gbit with a /29, and 200w of power.

There are lots of places that will do this, call for prices. How big are your vps's? If there not very big keeping them is likely cheaper.

i have found some local companies who do co-location if thats the right name

i will be paying 15-20USD a month for 500gb of traffic and 1gigabit of port the also have all their own router and switches so i wont need to pay for that part

there are like 10 of them i just dont know how to compare them(they are all local hosting/datacenters so i dont think sending a link here will help bc you guys probably wont understand anything(not in english)

is there anything specific i need to look for?  (also the reason traffic is so cheap is because all isps in our country sell network traffic for dirt cheap i pay for 2tb yearly to my isp about 30USD)

your getting that for $20 a month? Thats a pretty good deal. Id get a server like a dell r630 and your good. Just use a virtual router, no reason to have a hardware router here.

they have offered free routers and switches which is pretty nice

i just dont know if 500gb is enough because virtual servers that i rent have unlimited traffic so i have no idea how much traffic i use

also im planning to get an hp DL380 G7 (only server available in our country are HP and asus stuff)

ID get something newer than a g7, but depends on your usage

Why not monitor how much traffic your using currently?

Id make sure the system has impi or similar so you can do management on it remotely and reinstall remolty if needed.

just a quick question

after talking to the datacenter they have said that they dont have enough space for a dl380 i will be only getting 1 unit and dl360 will be a much better server

how can i check if the server im getting will fit in 1 unit or not (im not really understanding this unit kind of thing)

You can tell by looking at the server the dimentions, 1u is a bit under 2 inches thick. You can tell by looking at the picture.

Id try to get a g8 or newer, and get one with a impi/ilo.

iLO is standard on HP(E) servers G5 and newer, excluding the bottom end models and minitower servers. DL360 is a safe bet if 1U is required.

G8 units should be cheap to get in a low end config, spec it out with cheap 16GB RDIMMs (20 bucks a pop) and 2620v2 CPUs or faster and you have a decent bit of kit.
