3070 from USA to Canada

So I have a friend in the US and was thinking of buying a 3070 in the states if the chance arises quicker than it does in Canada. Just wondering if anyone's had experience shipping PC parts from US to Canada and how much customs, etc would end up costing

Depends on the shipping company, but you should expect anywhere from $50-$150 COD and duties/taxes.

This is on top of the shipping costs that you pay at checkout.

Depends on the carrier.

FedEx and UPS both charge brokerage. This is a fee in addition to taxes and customs.

USPS does not. USPS also has a higher chance of not being assessed duty and taxes upon crossing the border.

There is no duty on video cards. You will of course be charged tax. Both of these are dependent on what your friend fills out the customs forms as.

It's Christmas, so it's not unreasonable to get away with labeling it as gift without too much investigation.

That's probably what happened to me when DHL charged me 40 bucks in fees for a 35 dollar item I redeemed from Cathay Pacific. Annoying how they weren't transparent about it at all. They tried to shovel it as a CBSA problem saying that's the amount the Government quoted.

Yeah there's a bunch of things you have to watch out for, especially with smaller carriers (to NA) like DHL; for example, if you didn't have it delivered to your house and had to pick it up at a Canada Post location I believe they charge $15 (storage fee charged by Canada Post....though I wouldn't be surprised if that's inflated by DHL). Most companies let you clear your own item through customs, which eliminates the brokerage fee. It's just a pain in the ass.

DHL is not a smaller carrier.....

It's the largest logistic company in the world lol

Bigger than UPS, Fedex, etc.

They do most of their business in Europe. They're also not larger than FedEx or UPS by revenue or personnel...not sure where you got that idea from.

Almost everything I buy internationally, especially from china, is shipped DHL.

If using Canada Post, you'll pay the shipping cost, a ~$14 Canada Post handling fee (though, I've heard of some people not getting charged it, for an unknown reason), and the HST or GST + PST taxes that are applicable to your province based on the listed value of the shipment.

 

If you're using a private courier, you'll pay the shipping cost, plus brokerage fees (which can be huge) and potentially other fees (such as additional border processing if shipping via ground), plus the HST or GST + PST taxes that are applicable to your province.

 

I recommend avoiding using a private courier unless you don't care too much about the cost and just want the item.

I don't know if this applies to orders using a private courier, but the only international country I get charged import fees when ordering from is the US. China, the UK, Japan, no import fees. But ordering anything from the US (unless it's below $40 value or something like that) incurs full import fees for me.

Those numbers aren't accurate. For example, in 2019 UPS did $74,000,000,000 in revenue.

I don't know if this applies to orders using a private courier, but the only international country I get charged import fees when ordering from is the US. China, the UK, Japan, no import fees. But ordering anything from the US (unless it's below $40 value or something like that) incurs full import fees for me.

I spoke to someone at CBSA about it and they said it was always supposed to be charged and just wasn't enforced previously. But I never encountered that fee until it started being charged on all my shipments from the US some years ago. Parcels with a value under, I think, $40 are exempt from it and taxes.

Oh weird. TBH I haven't ordered a whole lot directly up from the US, as I use a parcel forwarder, but good to know.
