Is this a scam?

MiszS

My friend just bought an NH-D15, but the fans only have 3 pin connectors, so it can't possibly be PWM right? Also the splitter is missing 1 pin, but we don't need it that much

Oh, how would I do that? But isn't it supposed to have 4 pins anyway?

Can you link the listing they bought the cooler from? The NH-D15 and NH-D15S currently being sold have PWM fans.

In fact it comes with two of these: https://noctua.at/en/nf-a15-pwm/specification

The splitter missing a pin on one connection is normal, RPM is only reported by one fan to the motherboard. (this question is asked hundreds of times a day across the internet lol)

It was bought used, that's why I think it may be a scam, and the guy who we bought it from wasn't even the first owner lol, so it might be quite old

Send a picture of the label on the fan hub.

The fan hub where the sticker is that lists the fan model and specs.

I wouldn't call it a scam, as it will work fine.  It just may not work as well as using the original fans.

So those are aftermarket fans? That is kinda a scam, since it wasn't specified

We don't know, we don't know what you have. All we've seen is a picture of the cable end.

Noctua makes plenty of non-PWM fans and since the cooler was bought used, who knows what you have. Without a picture of the hub its a mystery to us.

Given you implied its third-hand rather than second-hand, the person selling it may not even know that.

I'd only call it a scam if they deliberately included worse fans, which they may in fact perform as well or better than the stock fans, depends on what model they are.

We'll see how it performs, but the seller said that his 8700K didn't get above 70 degrees, but no one knows if it was overclocked or not, and how much

Or what fan speed they used, or if those fans are quieter while pushing more air than the stock at a given speed.

Its far more complicated than even the rating on the fans themselves, as on paper inferior fans may be able to push more air than the stock fans with less annoying noise, as in real world use were not just sticking them at 100% and calling it a day.

So it depends on how well they perform at the speed required to keep your specific CPU cool.

One example being when I used the NH-D15s I bought a second fan then decided not to use it as it increased the noise level considerably while only dropping a few degrees on cooling.  Switching to two completely different fans in my case may have actually been better than the stock, but it wasn't worth the hassle.

Basically just show us a pic of the sticker of the fans.

Could be this is a nhd15 with a replaced fan on it.

As long as you paid 30$ or less it will be a ok deal as the thermalright peerless assasin and its other variants is a 35$ new cooler with nhd15 performance.

edit: for some reason the second fan is a 120mm one lol, but they are both quiet enough, so i think it will be just fine

That is totally a standard loadout for a D14, maybe it changed later but it'd have been that until then. Got 2 of them, one was bought in 2010 and this one would be 2016ish (from leftover stock, was discontinued by then already)

And yes I have used it on LGA1700 for a while.

I mean a D14 is still a good cooler. Its just a very old cooler. If the price is right then screw it, rock a heatsink from 2009, itll work the same as it did back then, that being "pretty damn good".

If this person sold you this calling it an NHD15 and pricing it like a modern NHD15 thats a different story.

But if this was 30, 40 dollars? S'all good
