Apple hasn't seem to forget about their tablets even with the somewhat successful launch of their new Macbooks. New rumors from Digitimes has hinted that the company will be refreshing their iPads as well as future iphones with 5G mmWave capabilities.

Multiple rumors have suggested Apple is planning to release a high-end 12.9-inch ‌iPad Pro‌ with a mini-LED display next year, with the possibility that there will be an 11-inch mini-LED model too, but details beyond that have been scant.

 

According to DigiTimes' sources, Apple's latest push on the development of AiP modules indicates that it is moving one step further towards develop RF front-end (RF-FEM) modules in-house, with the ultimate goal of supplying its own modem devices.

On another source, it says that screen manufacturers have begin supplying miniLEDs to apple lately.

LG Display is preparing to supply its Mini LED backlight LCDs to Apple. Its new display uses a small LED as the backlight and has improved performance in brightness and contrast ratio. Because it is reported that Apple will look to actively use Mini Led LCDs starting with iPads early next year and other products such as MacBook and iMac, there are expected to be changes in the global LCD market and to LCD technology. According to the industry on November 1, LG Display plans to supply its Mini LED backlight LCDs to Apple. These LCDs are expected to be used for Apple’s new iPads that will be released early next year.

 

“Starting with Apple, other IT device manufacturers will also follow Apple’s suit in using Mini LED backlight LCDs.” said a representative from the display industry. “This trend will bring huge changes to the global LCD market.” Regarding the supply of Mini LED backlight LCDs to Apple, LG Display stated that it cannot disclose any information related to its customers.

Thoughts: Cool, but it brings back the question of should I get a macbook air or an iPad Pro when their are similarly priced? 5G in most places still lacks development so I don't think the new antennas can be put into good use till perhaps the next year. Add the fact that M1s can run iOS with ease there seems to be less reasons to get an iPad for work when the former has a wider range of software support and less locked operating system.

The only reason people get the Ipad pro is the fact that the air will never be as portable.The touch screen can be useful, so you have more options. But people get get the air for more power when needed

It's more sensible to first establish your list of use scenarios. An acquaintance uses the iPad Pro and iPhone Pro because of the LIDAR sensors, which allows him to rapidly scan the environment with a custom app and upload data. The LIDAR also improves video a ton, allowing him to use the phone on an ATV around the works.

Haven't there been rumours about MiniLED displays for pretty much every iPad release in the last 2 years?

 

Imo, the only way this is happening is if Apple creates an iPad Pro Pro at twice the price. miniLED displays are just too damn expensive at the moment - the MiniLED display upgrade for the MSI Creator 17 costs €800-1000 (from a 144Hz 1080p), compared to €350 for the 4k (touch) display upgrade on an XPS 15. Given that's more than an entire iPad Pro, it certainly won't be a default option available across the board.

Maybe MSI are just taking advantage of the fact MiniLED is the latest buzz word and are making a large profit in it.

iPhone 13 miniLED confirmed? I hope so and I think they should be able to make the notch much smaller.

Thoughts: Cool, but it brings back the question of should I get a macbook air or an iPad Pro when their are similarly priced? 5G in most places still lacks development so I don't think the new antennas can be put into good use till perhaps the next year. Add the fact that M1s can run iOS with ease there seems to be less reasons to get an iPad for work when the former has a wider range of software support and less locked operating system.

The big breakpoint for me between iPad and MacBook is the iPencil.  I’m still considering an iPad Air over a MacBook Air because even though there’s stuff it won’t run I truely miss the handiness of the stylus on my old note3.  If the OS wasn’t owned by Google I would probably still be using a note. I don’t even mind Google.  What I can’t put up with is google big data stuff.  

Not a pro, not even very good.  I’m just old and have time currently.  Assuming I know a lot about computers can be a mistake.

Well even Apple is using Google Cloud for their iCloud servers, after they ditched Azure in 2018. Goolge big bata is not going away as it's the lifeblood of their business model.

Their iCloud doesn’t scrape data like their OS and apps do though.  This is the bit I care about.  The whole “you pay not in money but in data, and you pay EVERYTHING YOU OWN.  And we sell it to whoever buys it” thing really pisses me off.

The only reason than Apple's data collection is not as invasive as Google and Microsoft is not because of the goodness of their hearts but their business model is all about selling devices (Macs, iOS devices, Apple Watch) and services (Apple TV+Music, iCloud, Apple One, iTunes media). Why do you think that compared to Google Drive with free 15GB storage, iCloud free storage is just 5GB? Why do you think there is no ad-subsidized Apple Music just like Spotify or YT Music?

Potato potato.  They’re not going after me so I’m good. It’s not the paying I mind.  It’s the “you don’t get to choose what you pay we just take everything” that pisses me off.  It turns me from a customer to an animal bred for slaughter.  Being careful about hiding the knife doesn’t change that.  Google products are not free.  They’re often astoundingly expensive.
As for the search thing I’m not sold.  There are search systems that get away without doing that.  DuckDuckGo comes to mind.

Apple doesn't profit from data collection, google does. Apple have a big privacy angle with their products and services.

Apple already has a search engine. It's called Applebot, it's what powers Siri and Spotlight.

Imo, the only way this is happening is if Apple creates an iPad Pro Pro at twice the price. miniLED displays are just too damn expensive at the moment - the MiniLED display upgrade for the MSI Creator 17 costs €800-1000 (from a 144Hz 1080p), compared to €350 for the 4k (touch) display upgrade on an XPS 15. Given that's more than an entire iPad Pro, it certainly won't be a default option available across the board.

Allegedly, they're using the savings they're getting from Apple Silicon to offset the costs of more expensive ideas, like MiniLED. That's why the Apple Silicon Macs weren't that much cheaper (or cheaper at all). That's why (allegedly of course) Apple is looking at making a folding phone in 2022 that would retail for $1499, while Samsung is at $1999.
