Crossfire and AMD Woes

Gref

I've had AMD 7850s Crossfired for a while now, I love them when they work and they usually do, but when they don't it fucking sucks so much. The game I play the most Chivalry Medieval Warfare I have to run single card mode because it lacks Crossfire support. And now Titanfall is having shit tons of problems with Crossfire and that'll probably take forever to be fixed.

I'm tired of AMD and Developers lack of support for Crossfire, and I want out, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I still like AMD and I'd like to get a 290x but the prices are so jacked, wrecking the price/performance ratio; same with their other high end cards. Amazon has GTX 780s going for 500$ right now which is quite alluring. I'm thinking about getting it but I'll lose out on AMD technologies like TressFX and Mantle. Also another question, would an AMD FX 6350 OC'd to 4.5 Ghz bottleneck a GTX 780?

Sell both those cards for about $250-300 and pickup a 780 for about $500. You won't experience any bottlenecks.

Rules of Thumb:Having one more powerful card is always better than 2 weaker ones.

My Current Build:

Intel i5 3570K @ 4.4GHz 1.11V, Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO, Asrock Z77 Extreme4, Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz, Samsung 840 EVO 250GB, Asus GTX 760 DCII Overclocked, Corsair CX600M

I think the card you are talking about on EVGA's B stock is sold out? The lowest I could find a 780 is refurbished on newegg for $469

Anyway EVGA still has some really good deals on their B stock like the 780 ti superclocked for $619. That will definitely be an upgrade. :D

Well, the Respawn has acknowledged lack of multi GPU support for both AMD and nVidia cards, they did say it'd be fixed with the next patch. As for the HD7850 in CFX mode, my motto is to always get a single more powerful card to start off with, then go dual card CF/SLi later should the single card begin to struggle. Last I'd look at newegg, prices for AMD cards have dipped to somewhat saner levels...

I have a dual R9 290X setup right now, when CF works, it can be stunning, but should there be no CF support for a newer game, I'd disable CF and a single R9 290X is still beefy enough to just about max out every game in sight....

Wow, a couple people saying the FX 6350 OC'd to 4.5Ghz won't bottleneck a 780 .  Well cool!

I'd love to have an R9 290 or 290x but the price/performance on them makes me cringe.

Actually, it's the other way around, you should have asked whether the FX6350 @ 4.5ghz would bottleneck the GTX780 since Vishera is generally seen as weaker than 2nd gen i5/i7 onwards per clock speed. Don't get me wrong, Vishera is great, I happen to have an FX8350 in my 2nd rig with 2x GTX670 SLi'ed, they generally get less work done per clock cycle when compared to Intel's i7/i5 counterparts.

As for price performance, in my neck of the woods, an R9 290 costs less than a GTX780.....of course you can find the cheapest GTX780 andit'd be cheaper than a higher priced premium brand like Asus or MSI, but the cheapest R9 290 would still be cheaper than the cheapest GTX780......just a reflection of the usual nVidia premium prices here in Asia. So, perhaps for you the R9 290 doesn't make sense, but here in my neck of the woods, it certainly does.

BTW, my nephew' who was a bit of an nVidia guy before getting a HD6990, had just replaced his HD6990 as he'd wanted more performance. I'd expected him to go back to nVidia, but was shocked that he'd gone out and gotten the most expensive 290X around.....an Asus R9 290X DCU II. Seems he'd developed a liking for AMD GPU....

Yeah I totally meant to ask if the FX 6350 would bottleneck the GTX 780, I've corrected my posts.

Ah yeah you're in Asia, everything is different over there. It's mainly the US that's dealing with the insane price hikes on AMD cards because of miners and the greedy fucks at Newegg and other retailers.

Well I ordered an EVGA SC 770 because it seemed more reasonable for the system I'm running. Plus I would have had to upgrade my PSU for the 780 whereas my PSU has some headroom for the 770.

A 780 or a 290 whichever is cheapest where you are. Getting off crossfire is a good idea, especially on two mid range cards. I wish AMD invested more in making their crossfire work well, but they don't so its really best to stick with a single card for as long as possible. Your cards should still second hand sell reasonably right now so its an ideal time. Don't worry about AMD v Nvidia to much, just get which ever of these two cards is cheapest and it will solve your problems.
