what i mean by how old is your pc i mean cpu+mobo+ram. gpu's and storage, the main things you'd normally upgrade over the years don't count. though i am still interested how old those components are, they don't count for the poll.

i'm curious if the people on here upgrade more often than general consumers. we all know that "normies" will run a machine either until it gets slow or dies, and most normies i talk to have computers that are nearly 10 years old by now. i wanna know if this community upgrades more often.

i myself use a base platform that's almost 11 years old now, 2 Xeon X5650's, 32gb of ram and a Supermicro server board. so it's basically the best of the best from that era, and it's still very usable for what i do with it which is general use and heavily multithreaded tasks like running a few VM's at a time. i barely game on it, and when i do i don't play multiplayer games, just old single player games, and that works just fine as i don't need 60fps all of the time i'm playing. i often turn up the details really high, so like...

my main system is 3 and a bit years old (full system), but I did upgrade my videocard (couple days away from its 1 year anniversary) and added some more SSD storage (I think that was around 8 months ago).

At the moment I am not planning to upgrade, but I am looking for an opportunity to maybe think about upgrading. But I really shouldn't upgrade now, my PC is plenty fast for what I do with it.

In my experience, the average person will run their PC until they feel like it's 'too slow' (usually because hard drives), so their systems are often 5-8 years of age.

Gamers tend to upgrade their videocard about 2-4 years into the lifespan of a system, maybe sooner if they upgrade their monitor. The main systems I see from gamers are usually 6 years of age when they want to upgrade.

i've actually seen "average people" in my life come to me with systems that were only 2 or 3 years old to fix because they were slow, all they needed was an ssd and they were super fast again.

Less than 2 years but only because I had to replace a PC that I had since Jan 2009.

Depending on what you want to learn this question had that flaw, it could capture people like me who are just at the start of a long refresh cycle.

You certainly won’t answer the question about how often people upgrade as I answered two but my frequency is 10.

For sure.

"Slow PC" is the nr. 1 reason by far why people get a new PC (average people), but with SSD's becoming ubiquitious in the last couple of years, I suspect something else will take over that nr. 1 place (Either "I don't have enough space on the drive" or "the battery only lasts minutes" will close the gap towards "slow PC").

2 days older than dirt.

My main rig Z77 OC Formula with 3770K is 8 years old.

My second rig Rampage III Formula with X5690 is 9 or 10 years old, the CPU is an ES so I'm not really sure.

My third rig is like 12 by now. Rampage Formula with X3360. I won my class (Air cooled) in Forum Warz with that board and an E8600 ES back in 07 I think.

Main rig is a 6600k + 16GB DDR4 + 1070 so about 2015 ish - 4 or 5 years?

My laptop that got me through uni is a 2013 MBP, so coming up on 6 or 7 years?

Hoping to upgrade my desktop asap, the MacBook has soldiered on and am very happy with it, not really sure when I need/want to upgrade really

i'd take low storage as 1st. betteries last a long long time, the one in my elitebook is becoming a bit of a drag, it only lasts 1.5 hours now but like it's 8 years old. while ssd's are very cheap, low end systems are shipping with 120gb pretyt often now, and that's tough on Linux, nevermind on Windows which puts a Windows.old folder on oyur drive that's 20+gb if you do a version upgrade which they force on you.

I bought my CPU(a 9800X), motherboard, RAM, SSD and more HDDs, and Windows in Feb. 2019 to replace my 4 1/2 year old i7-4790k  and built the computer that weekend. Then in Sept. 2019, I replaced my MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X with my current GPU, a RTX 2080 Gaming X Trio on clearance at my local Micro Center (an hour drive that I call local haha). I did also buy a Blu Ray combo drive for Blu Ray movies and stuck that in the system.

The only recent upgrade I have done to my computer though is some new thermal paste finally after using a 5 year old tube of Arctic Silver 5 to the paste that came with my Noctua NH-D15 in 2017 (Carried the cooler over to my "new" build). The paste shaved off 5 degrees Celsius from the highest in Cinebench R20 runs. Also bought a 10980XE to plop in my system a little over two weeks ago as it was the last 10980xe in stock at a different Micro Center north of me (I am about equidistant between two Micro Center's, but prefer the one in my state due to 1/2 the sales tax rate than going out of state, but not so much for the tolls thanks to New Jersey Turnpike/Garden State Parkway).
