Micron was the initial GDDR6 supplier for Nvidia but they switch to Samsung, again because their GDDR6 is superior. Micron only supplies GDDR6X to Nvidia now, being that only they make it.

I guess like the 3000 series, it's been so long since a big GPU release. Combined with the 'optimistic' pricing of the RTX 20xx cards, there are a lot of people out there desperate for a GPU upgrade. Waiting to build inventory would have been nice, but I guess they really wanted them available for Christmas. It's disappointing, but not surprising.

I dont blame people from taking advantage of buying multiple gpu's and reselling for a profit. I blame people buying them at the marked up prices created the market for it to work so well. care hot take.....

Asus are selling AMD GPUs which they purchase as GPUs and use to build their own cards. Its of no relevance to ASUS how many cards AMD or any other AIBs sell.

 

The cards launching on release day will all be AMD cards, built entirely by AMD and sold by AMD directly (Frontier Edition cards). The custom AIB variants won't launch till a few weeks after launch day.

Honestly I don't think this is the case anyway. Zen 3 availability has also been very low. The world's fabs were not ready for this massive demand for high performance silicon, neither were the silicon mines.

This news shouldn't be surprising in the least, and anyone thinking AMD would have tons of stock at launch is either new to the space, or has their head so far into AMDs junk they won't see light for days.

 

There's many more parts to a GPU than there is to a CPU, so it's easier to have stock issues. There's a worldwide pandemic, which can result in supply shortages, difficulty simply shipping the items, as well as drastically increased demand (which in itself is multi pronged, as it accounts for both demand from people being stuck at home, as well as the large increase in performance).

 

Most GPU launches have had shortages of supply. In the state we're in, it really shouldn't be a shock that it's worse than usual.

The bad press from postponing won't be as bad as the bad press from selling out in minutes then having cards on eBay for 2x the price.

 

Heck they could have simply announced a date 2 weeks later to begin with then nobody would have been any wiser.

Why? It's not like they haven't been building supply in the meantime. They knew their launch date, it's not a surprise to them, and waiting makes absolutely no sense. Just get what you have out the door and to customers. People crying that they can't spend hundreds of their dollars on a luxury item is pathetic.

Really, Nvidia dropped the ball really really hard, even if they drop it a bit, it'll be still be better off than Nvidia, also, each day they aren't at market, there are more and more purchases of Nvidia products that will reduce their market size. So you can wait and build up what you can, but at some point, you just gotta shit or get off the pot. They must have decided that that was the date that would balance things out to a state that was acceptable to them.

Funny how you say Nvidia dropped the ball, yet AMD is heading in the same direction. It's simply demand outpacing supply.

IMO it makes absolutely no sense to wait. Just sell what you have.

I mean, if you're looking at higher end competitive AMD cards, it's been what...6? 7 years?

Attacking the supply is rarely the answer, you have to take away the demand. There will always be supply.
