What would you upgrade?

J.Munslow

Hi guys,

I've been using this config for a few years now and was wondering if it could be time for an upgrade (whilst my parts still have some resale value...).

What would you look to replace (or keep) in my current machine?

As I zoom out on this page to read the whole specs that can be broken into a 15 lines... depends on your budget. I don't know what you want to upgrade, is it because you are not getting the performance you are expecting at a certain resolution/graphical settings?

For me, I would go with upgrading the CPU and GPU.

I'm fairly satisfied with my performance at 2560*1080 and I mostly play strategy games or city builders. I'm just wondering if changing something could give me a big leap in performance that could give me a few more years before a bigger upgrade

Nah, at this time it's good enough. Wait for atleast a couple of years! This rig is good enough.

Then I would just go with a GPU upgrade down the road from now (once supply of RTX 30 series and the new AMD Radeon 6000 series stabilizes).

If its not broken, don't fix it.

That 1060 3GB plays 1080p UW decently?  Wouldn't have thought it had the oomph for that, good to know.

You really don't need much gpu power when you start lowering settings :p. I mean a hd 7970 could play most games at 1440p 60fps low settings till about 2019 if you wanted it to do so.

I would honestly hold on for 2 more years or so and then just upgrade platforms totally when ddr5 is a thing.

Lol, I like the 1+ 7 pro inclusion you snuck in there.

As a Gigabyte Z170 + 6700k user myself, I can say that our processors still have a lot of life left in them.  We are starting to fall behind due to our clock speed disadvantage to the 10600 and soon to be our plausible IPC disadvantage to Zen 3, but we aren't out yet as long as we game at 1440p or 4k.  I'm in a bit of a debate with myself over Zen 3, but I am 100% buying a new CPU by the time Zen 4 / 12th gen Alderlake are released since Zen 4 and Alder Lake will both represent big architectural changes for their respective companies

i'd upgrade gpu to 3060/3060ti/3070 or whatever amd launches in a couple of weeks.

The "launch" hopefully is better than the "3080 launch"
