Is now a good time to upgrade?

Hi guys (and gals),

I was wondering the other day if now is a good time to upgrade my old editing rig. Like, building a new computer. My rig is getting quite old (I'm still rocking an i7 3770k and a GTX 1070) but editing on it is still fine to the most part (at least when working with ProRes footage and/or Proxys). Still, I feel like I'm missing out on a lot of potential workflow and rendering speeds.

 

So on to my question. Is now a good time to upgrade my machine to an i9 10900k based machine or rather is there any upcoming big hardware change or breakthrough that is worth waiting for a couple more months?

 

Maybe you guys can give advice on that topic. Thanks in advance.

You betcha! It's called Zen 3 aka Ryzen 4th gen (or 5000).

Now is the best time to upgrade. Zen 3 comes out in a month. Ampere is already out (depending on whether you can find a card or not). AND THE BIGGEST UPDATE for Editing Stations: The first REAL PciGen4 drives have just hit the stores a week ago:

ADATA Newest Gammix
Sabrent Rocket 4

I don't know how AMD can make it even more confusing for people who don't know much about hardware...

 

Zen3 = 4th Gen = 5000 Series

If someone did not use reason to reach their conclusion in the first place, you cannot use reason to convince them otherwise.

What about the Corsair MP600, Sabrent Rocket 4.0 and the Gigabyte one (forgot how it's called). These have been on shelves for ages. At least as long as X570.

I emphasized the word REAL because the previous Gen4 nVme that came out were built with a modified Gen3 controller (Phison e16) hitting high temps and topping 5GBs speeds AT MOST. The ones that came out now are the first REAL Gen4 SSDs since they use brand new PciGen4 controllers built from scratch for next generation architecture, allowing speeds above 7GBs (Some say they go up to 7.4) and the temps are much more reasonable.

They use the new Samsung Alpis, the Phison 18 or the new SM controller -- The first REAL Gen4 controllers (not that modified Gen3 Phison E16). Those older modified Gen3 nVme were rushed out so AMD can say YES THERE ARE gen4 drives on the market. So the PciGen4 platform would sell more.

3-4-5 haha, that's amusing.

But unifying the nomenclature for the CPU and APU is a good choice. No more confusion in the future.

Probably they want to hasten the release of zen3 laptop cpu to compete with tigerlake.

Intel will be bulldozed by then.

JK, I mean yes for the foreseeable future which is just a couple of weeks, 1 can confidently say that until Intel starts bundling an Xe Gaming GPU for free with their CPUs, no is gonna buy Intel. You can even go to PC part picker and look at the recently completed builds, most of them are on Ryzen.

Not ditching anyone, go for the best tech, no matter what brand. Currently AMD reigns supreme.

Can't recommend Intel apart from 10900k for absolute game madness.

Gaming really isn't my main focus on that machine though. I'm really more productivity/editing focused with maybe a chill session of gaming every then and now...

For production 3900x, if you in a hurry 3950x 16 sweet cores will serve you like a god.

For hackintosh you'll be loosing Intel quicksync if you use AMD, if you use it alot, then 10900k for you then.

Not a deal breaker tho, the many cores 3950x give you can make it up.
