What is the higher quality PSU between the EVGA Supernova G2 750, Seasonic Focus PX 750 and PRIME GX 750?

The PX is higher quality, but it depends on the prices. Both PSUs are good. You already have a 650 G2, though, so you should be fine for the RTX 3080.

This article and the prospect of running my 650W at 85% load whilst using an RTX 3080 scared me if I'm honest. I sold a bunch of stuff on eBay including my current PSU so had spare cash.

 

I've also noted the PRIME GX 750 was the exact same price as the FOCUS PX 750. The Prime PX is £20 more. Which would you go for?

Well, you didn't have to sell your PSU, but since you did, what's the price difference of the PX and G2? And are there any other options you would consider? If you are considering other options, what's your budget and country?

 

Also, 85% load is fine. PSUs are usually rated for 100% loads. Only real reasons you would want a lower load on the PSU is so that the fan isn't running as loud or you want slightly better efficiency (and it's very slight, like 1-3% which wouldn't matter)

No, PSUs aren't usually rated for 100% sustained loads 24/7/365 ... That's a myth....... That actually does vary widely depending on the actual PSU Model and what temp that wattage output or percentage of output it's rated at. MOST PSUs aren't rated at maximum wattage on the 12V+, it's normally below the total output.....

 

Some can't put out the maximum wattage at the maximum temp, the wattage output scales down.

 

Running a PSU at 80% or higher of the rated wattage 24/7/365 is not recommended...

 

Want at least 30% overhead......

Ah shit here we go again. Well, the only thing I want to address is that he wouldn't be running the PSU at 80% 24/7, the PSU calc he used was assuming under full load (btw, @OZJZERO don't use PSU calcs, they aren't even close to the real load), and I wasn't talking about 24/7, you seem to be out of touch.

I'm not too familiar with other PSUs so these were the ones I narrowed it down to based on price. The G2 750W is £100 at a second hand price. The Focus PX 750 and Prime GX 750 are £140. From the UK.

 

Furthermore, how long are PSUs rated to last? Is there a recommendation to replace them every X years, or can they run until they die?

Normally run them until the warranty expires or maybe a year or two past it, then replace them or until something goes wrong, whichever comes 1st.

out of those id look at the G2, but right now the enermax Revolution DF is a steal in a lot of locations.

For the same price as a used G2, you can get a new BitFenix Whisper M 750 W (if you trust CCL), and if you want Platinum efficiency, the Fractal Design Ion+ 760 W is only £115.

 

Also, PSUs are rated to last until warranty expires, but they usually last longer than that. I've seen people use the same PSU from 2007 even though the warranty expired in 2012 and doesn't have any problems. Of course, it could go out at any point in time, but at least they aren't using anything worth much (they are using an old AMD Athlon 64 X2 with a 750ti.)

I did initially consider the Fractal but the Focus is rated higher on Tom's Hardware, hence I went for the latter.

Admittedly the 'Platinum' efficiency rating of the Focus drew me to that. Out of the one you listed, which is the one I should go for? Efficiency and silence are my preference.

whisper M or sraightpower/revolution DF probably. 

 

iirc those are the ones who are the most silent. tho really leadex 3 or RMx are pretty darn quiet.

I'll probably rule out of the Straight Power as it only provides 5 year warranty.

its a feature which can be nice at thse higher wattages as it acts as an extra protection. tho really only relevant at higher wattages.

Sorry to throw another PSU in the mix, but how is the Corsair HX 750?

HX is an excellent unit, but it depends on the price. If you want digital monitoring and have the ability to switch between single-rail and multi-rail, you should get it. I would just think of multi-rail as an additional protection that isn't needed but a nice to have.

Tbh I'm more split between the Focus PX and Corsair HX due to the Platinum efficiency. @GoldenLag What makes the Whisper M a better unit than the Focus PX? I was under the impression the Focus PX was a very good unit - all reviews seem to be extremely positive.

So it would really be between the Focus and the HX, I would take the HX any day of the week, quieter, better fan, better protection, notthing bad to say about the HX. Never really cared for the Focus personally.
