With the next gen consoles right around the corner and nvidia talking about RTX IO it seems like PCIe Gen 4 m.2 SSDs hase a bright future. My question is this: do you think game devs will design games around this and how will this effect gamers without PCIe Gen 4 SSDs?

The types of SSDs in next gen consoles are pretty different from your average m.2 SSD. The way that data is accessed is a bit more specialized.

I highly doubt that game devs would have the opportunity to make separate systems for high speed storage on both gaming PCs as well as consoles, but only time will tell.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Game devs are still making games that are Win7 compatible. It's going to be a long time before you get a game that requires anything "next gen"

Even if game-devs did designed games around RTX IO, the thing is, RTX IO doesn't require PCIe 4.0 and actually works just fine over PCIe 3.0 as well.

The games will mostly be produced to keep up with the most common and popular systems.

If you make a game that requires a $10000 system to run, you won't sell a lot of copies.

doesn't mean it wont run better if it has more modern features

sure you can use windows on HDD, but having an SSD would make it feel way better

-sigh- feeling like I'm being too negative lately

The physical connection has been superseded, Gen 3 is now “last gen”.

As per actual use of its capability, it will be a relevant alternative until it isn’t viable as a cheaper alternative.

In general people already have 16GB ram + 6-8GB vram even on quite old gaming pc:s. Thats a lot more than only 16GB thats available on consoles. I guess it could be needed on 4K gaming but I think its likely that 10-16GB vram cards are a better option than trying to use an ssd for vram swap.

In terms of storage, not much. We will see consoles that can pump out better performance than some PC's. If you're talking about GPUs, the upper tier GPUs already see slight bottlenecking with PCIe 3.
