Hate those bandwidth, life sucking ads. Especially if I’m listening to a Youtube video (some things really would work as audio-only) during a drive home, and I get some ad that lasts for multiple minutes that I can’t skip, because being a good driver comes first.

you can never "get rid" of those. sponsor blocks are built into the video so they cannot be blocked. they can be skipped though.

pc? get ad-block.. its simple...

android no root.. get the Youtube AdVanced app. it blocks 95% of the ads and is frequently updated. 100% free and is a drop in replacement

android w/ root, get AdGuard or something similar with the vanced app and it will block ads everywhere (including chrome and games)

iphone? there probably something out there. idk

im sure you can set that up very easily. but would require fine tuning to make sure it works. but that would only work for the short versions of the ads. if the ad is longer, the program would have no way of knowing if the ad is still playing or not.

Yea for the past few weeks, the amount of ads YouTube is throwing in is getting disgusting. I was watching some NHL highlights and I pretty much got a 30 second ad after every 1-2 minutes of actual content. That's worse than cable TV...

Here is a pro-tip. On Android, get Youtube Vanced.

Here are some benefits of Youtube Vanced over the regular Youtube app:

  • Background playback without needing Youtube Premium.
  • Adblocking
  • Built in Sponsor Block (skips sponsor segments)
  • Set "preferred video quality"
  • Customize what you want to see, for example you can remove all "YouTube stories", or watermarks, change where comments are, etc.

10 seconds.  How quaint!  Sponsored spots seem to have grown to about 60 seconds at least now.  Some are longer.

Fringe benefit: you're actually paying the creators you watch for the content they produce (assuming most of them are demonetized, which was a concern for a while, but seems to be abating now).

Totally worth it, IMO. But YouTube is my primary vector of content consumption nowadays, so I'm literally saving hours of my life from ad consumption.  YMMV, depending on how much you watch.

I would imagine a sponsor spot would have the sponsor's name said more than once if it's more than 10 seconds long, if you wanna be serious about it.

But the you have a bunch of guesswork again. Why not just have a program do it for you automatically?

Besides, videos like LTT are filled with ads. I went to their latest video just to check it out and they have 3 sponsor segments in that video. One that was 17 seconds long, one that was 5 seconds and then a third one that was 16 seconds.

And that's just one 8:20 video. That's a lot of fiddling around when you can just get an addon that does it automatically. The whole "just skip around in the video until the segment is over" feels very unnecessary and contains a lot of guesswork. Why not just get the addon and it's done automatically?

If we are talking about YouTube ads, that's not the creators fault. YouTube added mid video ads to every video over 8 minutes, and if you're a creator with over 1000 videos.... yeah screw disabling them.

If we are talking sponsor spots... I dont mind the LTT ones, because compared to some other creators... they're short.

Hehe yeah right.

This is what I saw when I opened up the latest LTT video.

First I got an unskippable 14 second ad.

Then an ad that was skippable after 5 seconds.

Then 18 seconds of in-video sponsorship.

Then about 30 seconds of actual content, summarizing what the video is.

Then a ~10 second intro.

So so far, I have sat at my computer for 77 seconds and out of that, 47 seconds have been ads and about 30 seconds have been content. And that's because I had to actively click around in the video to skip the ad rather than just let the video play passively.

Then the entire description is basically full of ads.

Buy the LG TV. Buy our LTT merch. Buy a floatplane membership. Buy LTX Expo tickets. Links to other sponsors like PIA, keyboards, nerd or die stream overlays, gaming chairs, displate, audible, etc.

The entire LTT channel is basically an ad machine that just spew out ads upon ads.

This might as well be a picture of someone watching the LTT channel.

tv.jpg.f1ac619c1cc6ca449cc25f02bd4ea81e.jpg

But the video is very frontloaded with ads, so it's worse in the beginning. But then they still throw in stuff like an ad for Carpool critics in the middle of the video, and then an ad at the end of the video, and then credits for some weird reasons (as if people give a shit about who directed or edited a ~5 minute Youtube video where people sit in a chair and look at a TV).

I think it's sad that this is what is considered acceptable these days, and you even going as far as to say their sponsor segments are short compared to others.

First 2 are (partially, LTT does still enable them end of day) YouTubes fault though, they were never that bad before I got Premium (not a solution, I use YouTube instead of Spotify), and as far as I'm aware, LTT doesn't enable midroll ads. It's YouTube giving you dumb amounts of ads.

18 second in-video, while I agree it may be annoying, its less annoying then the 2 minute long mobile game sponsor spots (now these piss me off).

I think the LTTStore shilling is funny (in a pathetic way), and I've always questioned the need for credits in the actual video, because I feel that'd be better in the description. I tend to just skip the last minute of a video and play next one.

I do, however, actually think linking everything in the decription is fair, because if somebody sees a review/showcase/product placement and wants to look for it, it does help. I've used them a few times from LTT, and a lot from Z Reviews (audio tuber).

I agree, it's sad that I've gotten to the point where I consider LTT ads good. My point still stands, a lot of YouTubers do it worse, but I'll admit that's like comparing 2 bad things and saying 1 is good because the other is worse... they're both bad.

TV though, is just as bad as the internet. 1/3 of a show/movie will be ad breaks (that's the channels fault though), and lately I've noticed how much product placement is in movies/TV. Hell, even music videos is full of it. Just as bad as YouTube, but they don't tell you it's there.

Honestly, they're providing quality content for free.  Keep in mind that what you see requires nearly 30 employees to produce, and each of their videos typically involves hours of fiddling with technology.  I mean, in a recent video Anthony hacked a Wii into a gameboy case!  That had to have taken dozens of man hours to assemble and configure!

Point is, their content ain't cheap.  If you pay $10 a month, you can completely eliminate the YouTube ads, and after that you're left with the occasional sponsored video, a quick 15 second spot at the beginning and end of the video, and the quick interjection of "LTT Store dot com" somewhere in the video.

Sounds like a lot of people and man hours being spent and yet I don't find the content enjoyable. Anyway, I don't really care how many people are involved with something and neither should you. If the content has problems such as being absolutely stuffed to the brim with ads everywhere then I will say I dislike their content because of it. And so should you.

You wouldn't justify things like loot boxes in games by saying stuff like "well they had lots of developers working on it and need to make money", right?

Same thing here.

So I need to pay to get less ads but even if I pay them I don't get ad free content? No thanks.

There's an extension on Chrome called SponsorBlock that auto skips in-video sponsors. Data is user generated and you can easily whitelist YouTubers. I don't know if it just skips the whole video if it's a sponsored video like the LG Gram showcase.

Methinks you've misidentified the problem.  I think the problem is that you just don't like LTT.  Because I like LTT, I pay real money to avoid ads, and I don't find their unblockable ads intrusive or offensive at all.

I have actually gotten the same way with some channels I'm on the fence about -- The King of Random, for example.  Their channel is now borderline for me (unless you like seeing stuff microwaved, put in a vacuum chamber, or turned into cotton candy), so when they break away to one of their sponsored spots, I get legitimately upset with them.

It's not the ads themselves, though.  It's the content.
