8/6 Years since my last BIG upgrade

Jason 57

Well first off I would like to thank @Mateyyy and @TofuHaroto for their help picking out parts for this upgrade.

I was hoping to upgrade my Physical Desk (e.g. cut wood, stain, poly, assemble) before putting this upgrade together, but my daughter was trying to install FFXIV Online yesterday and the computer froze 3 times on her.

So she asked me if I could put my upgrade together now.

And like any Dad of a 16 year old, I caved and got started at 730pm last night.

So I cleared off the kitchen table, grabbed a fresh MD Zero, and got cracking.

Here are the items I purchased:

AMD RYZEN 5 3600 6-Core 3.6 GHz (4.2 GHz Max Boost) Socket AM4 65W 100-100000031BOX Desktop Processor

Paid over retail for it, but it will hold the SSDs I need.

WD Blue 3D NAND 500GB Internal SSD - SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5"/7mm Solid State Drive - WDS500G2B0A

To put my Blu-ray/DVD drive to use still.

Still using:

MSI GTX 1070 Gaming X

WD 3TB Green HDD

WD 1TB Black HDD

SanDisk SSD PLUS 2.5" 240GB SATA III Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) SDSSDA-240G-G25

WD 250GB Blue SSD

So I asked my daughter to pull the old tower out so I could move over the video card.

After doing a small amount of cable management for the first run.

I left the side window off (to appease the computer gods)

I asked my daughter to do the honors of pressing the start button for the first time.

Then it was press Delete until I was into the BIOS...

I was so happy that the first items showed up and ALL memory was seen.

I sped the memory up to the 3600MHz it should be, and got Windows installed.

I was hoping that would be it, and I could go to bed. It was 1030pm after all, and I get up at 415am for work.

But my daughter wanted to make sure Drawing Tablet was up and running, and that she could move over the OTHER files from the drives in the old tower.

See next post.

So after getting a couple of drivers installed, and figuring out how to get Windows 10 to see my 4TB drive.

I shut down and went back to work.

So the problem I have run into is that I don't have enough SATA power connectors!

The case requires one to power the case fans, so I only have 5 of my 6 drives connected.

The 250GB WD Blue (old C drive) is an older SSD. So I am thinking of moving the files, formatting it, then disconnecting it, to connect power to the SanDisk 250GB since it is a SATA6 drive.

I do like the lack of RGB on mine VS my son's that I built last fall.

I haven't installed the MSI Mystic Light for controlling yet. (And I haven't had a lot of success with it on my Son's computer anyway)

I got finished at midnight, where my daughter took over. I hope she was able to play her FFXIV Online game. Guess I'll find out when I get home.

And Yes, I will post another thread once the actual desk gets updated.

So please don't complain about the tower on the floor, hopefully that will only last a couple of weeks!!! (fingers crossed)

So I bought a SATA power add on cable. Installed that this morning. Now all 6 of my SATA drives show up.

Had to do a bit more cable management 😉

I do like the cover plates of the Lancool 2 Mesh. However, you still need to management it a bit to get the covers to sit properly 😉

And shut the doors.

Hopefully pics to follow. Doesn't seem to work on my phone 📱😞
