Are you talking about stainless steel strap ties?

Those are for tubing and industrial applications and stuff, not for use in a computer...

You should never use anything metal to hold down a cable, unless it's a steel jacketed conduit for like a house or building.

Is 8 inches okay, since I am attaching a 120mm fan to a heatsink.

Do not add metal to your system, it can potentially conduct and cause shorting issues. Nylon is perfectly fine.

Like others have said, bare metal ties can cause the insulation to rub through on the edges and short. My suggestion would be either reusable twist ties or hook-and-loop (velcro) ties. No need to cut them off if you ever move wires, so no chance to accidentally snip a wire.

Metal zip ties are for specialized used, specifically used in areas that would have exposure to outside elements that would normally break down plastic zipties.

Never used these in electronics unless you know and understand where and when it is safe.

How big is your heat sink and how thick is the fan? that will be your answer...

I would recommend against zip ties altogether. If you hae to use them then do NOT use metal ones around cables. It risks damaging the cables (cut into them) and also get in contact with something inside your PC and potentially short circuit it.

It is far better to use velcro "tape" like this one:

You will hate yourself if you go with zip ties and then realize you have to replace or redo something. Also, you can use the "tape" for stuff like peripheral cables as well.
