The concept, via Kickstarter:

Essentially, what I want to do in the game is give you an introduction to the Japanese language within the game itself. I know people who are interested in this style of gaming, as well as Anime and Manga, and who have wanted to learn Japanese because of it, but have no idea where they should start. So why not a fully-fledged story-driven JRPG that gives you a nice start with the language itself?

Before I lose you with the education side of things, I want to tell you that the game itself is a game before anything else, not a flash-card application nor a voice recognition translator, but rather I have put the game, and therefore the gameplay, before anything else. This means it plays like a JRPG, there are random battles, bosses, a story, pets, wizards, cities, houses as well as cats and you will play through collecting items, experience points, weapons and everything else that comes with a traditional JRPG.

And I'm even slowly learning Japanese to, so I could see this helping me out a lot, if it's practical, of course.

Oh internet, you just keep surprising me

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/297265509/koe-a-jrpg-with-japanese-at-the-core-of-gameplay

Koe)pronounced “ko-eh” is a role-playing game in the style of traditional JRPGs such as Dragon Quest, Pokemon and Final Fantasy and is influenced heavily by them. Koe will be released for Windows, Mac OSX and Linux with plans for it to be released on Playstation Vita.

The game uses a really interesting battle system that, literally, uses the power of words to defeat your enemies, by using the "hiragana" characters as items/skills.

Combination of characters will allow the players to create new weapons and objects, also leveling up the individual sylables will increase the effectivness of the item it produces.

And as any good'ol JRPG you will be able to create your character, select its gender, have pets, etc.

The game seems like a really interesting concept, oh, and it also has creepy cats
