On my way to being a hardware expert + IT pro, but need life advice

17yo, am attending my local career center/academy (in fact I am by far the most intelligent in IT for my school's class of 2021) for PC repair, IT, and networking. My forte is 100% PC hardware. Despite the fact that I have only built 2 PCs in my life (my first was a piece of trash looking back), I have been studying hardware in depth for around a year and a half now. (Steve Burke from GN, Moore's law is dead, and AHOC are very helpful :)) and with the exception of PSU cables, I could prob build a rig blind just from my knowledge of PCs. My knowledge of PC hardware is much more depth than breadth. (As in I haven't taken a complete Comp Sci course, nor do I understand programming one bit, but I am trying my best to learn the low level complications of motherboards, RAM, GPUs, etc.)

 

However, I am kinda poor and just working with high parts is still a dream. This is going to be a problem, right?

 

I came here looking for advice on what kind of jobs I should look for in the future (after a low level IT or PC technician job) and what kind of certifications I should get to get there. (I have heard that in IT, for the first couple rungs up the "ladder," certifications are worth a lot more than a college degree in CS. Correct me if I'm wrong.) A lifetime job as a PC technician would be great, but it won't pay well after long and while not a dead end, could feel like it because I don't know of similar jobs that are better paying. 

Anyone that actually builds PCs all day, creates parts lists, etc. for a living, please join this conversation. 

 

Advice here could actually make a big difference in my life, so genuine knowledge and advice is greatly appreciated.

Yes and no. My parents are willing to help pay for it, but in that case it is either I postpone their retirement (They currently only make $27k usd/year, which is lower class for my area) or I take on a ton of college loan debt, and in one case I feel really guilty, in the other I am carrying a lot of debt that will hinder me for the rest of my life. I'm prob smart enough to get some scholarships (just won a $1000 yesterday lol), but I'm much more considering waiting 4-6 years after I graduate from HS and then enter an online college for Comp Sci or something that will make me a more valuable employee. (However that $1k scholarship expires in 3 years)

The only people who build PCs all day outside of prebuilts in a factory are system integrators like Digital Storm or Origin. I'm not sure what their hiring process is to be honest. If you like hardware look at an  engineering system admin role or benchmark engineer at companies. They will deal with a lot of different hardware and some minor scripting here and there. I would highly recommend a college degree and if you can't finically pay for tuition look for finical aid, grants, and scholarships.

Advice here could actually make a big difference in my life, so genuine knowledge and advice is greatly appreciated. 

Let me tell you right now. At 17 years old, you think you're hot shit and the smartest there, and that's fine. If that fuels you to keep learning, great! 

However, this mentality will MURDER you in the IT world. (I.T., Tech Support, SysAdmin, NetEng, etc)

Two problems I see here:
1. I.T. is anything but building PCs all day. I spend more time staring at logs, scrolling through wikis, writing emails, and restarting printers then I do building PCs. And usually it's cloning a drive and upgrading someone from Ivy bridge to skylake, installing extra RAM, or replacing dead PSUs. You will RARELY ever get to actually build a PC. Maybe two or three times a year. 

2. You're probably learning the wrong information. The job of a good IT staff is to make all the shitty Windows patches, printer upgrades, switch/router/firewall replacements and hardware replacements seem as flawless and painless as possible. Tech fields rely on you being able to take the newest information sort through it as quickly as possible to see what applies to your company, then implement it. 

EX: Microsoft releases a windows patch that breaks communication with one of your networked printers. (Fking Wednesdays are brutal) Knowing that your test PC updates 24 hours before the rest of the office, that's exactly how much time you have to figure out how to make sure that when everyone else's PC updates, you've already got a new driver ready so no one else notices the hiccup.

Knowledge is power. If you're interviewing at a company and your meeting is with an HR person, just walk away. All they will want to see is that you're good on paper. This could mean Certs, Degrees, etc. The people that HR hires like this is almost always hit or miss unless the HR person is told to look for something specific.

I was speaking IT as the broad field of jobs. Hardware engineer, Benchmark engineer, system integrator is the type of stuff I was looking at.

I was speaking IT as the broad field of jobs. Hardware engineer, Benchmark engineer, system integrator is the type of stuff I was looking at. 

And what was ur education path like to become part of IT (or whatever ur job title is)?

My rough education path: 
14-15 years old: Built PCs for high school and college students looking to get into gaming, streaming, etc.

                           Started teaching myself CAD/CAM software for robotic design as part of a B.E.S.T. Robotics team.

16: Started advertising online for mobile home PC troubleshooting (Desktop/laptop repair, installing devices like wireless routers, Powerline adapters, etc.)

17: Started learning virtualization, focusing on desktop VMs to sandbox malicious software. 

18: Moved states, started college (Pursuing 2 year IT/IS associate's degree), focused heavily on CAD, remote technical support (AnyDesk, Teamviewer, Zoho assist, etc) and virtualization.

19: Purchased 2 servers for homelab, installed Freenas and Proxmox to teach myself NAS/SAN and useable VM structure for small/medium businesses.

      Passed CompTIA A+ part 1. Forgot there was a part 2. Still don't have it.

      Hired as Part time CAD/IT for office of construction company. Close to 100 networked devices managed by me.

A degree will be more valuable and will allow you more options in the future and also the potential for higher pay starting off. You are less of a liability if you have a degree so you are more likely to get a job

Ok I exaggerated the coding a bit. I do understand the concepts behind programming, and some of the basics, but I haven't done any actual coding in 2.5 years, nor do I want to do it again. (With the exception of some command line scripting I had to do as part of my Career Center class.)

That said, how good are you really? From what I can see, you've played with some PCs for just a few years., likely more modern hardware. 

 

Building a PC isnt diagnosing a blue screen which is rather difficult. Could be anything from hardware to software.

 

Best bet, look for work as an apprentice. In my humble opinion, you're far from pro. (Not trying to hurt feelings, opinion based off the little bit Ive read here today.)

I can't give advice on what you should be studying towards, but I can give you some life advice. 

 

Being confident is great, being a smart ass who thinks they know everything will work against you. 

 

If I'd have had that attitude when I did my apprenticeship (1988-1991 in the paintshop of a car dealership) I'd have had my balls greased on a daily basis.

Yes, I have not given much detail on my experience, mostly bc my hands on experience is so little due to my current circumstances and financial situation. I try my best to learn about hardware as much as possible, not so much software, that is a weak point of mine. I can diagnose stuff pretty well (level 2 IT ig, maybe even level 3) but there is a lot of stuff such as windows registry, a bunch of CMD stuff, and MacOS as a whole that I do not understand. 

 

My first build (I was oblivious at the time, didn't ask for any help for building a parts list, and it shows) was a FX-6300 and GT 210 (I had no clue what a GPU was at the time, boy have I learned) on an micro ATX gigabyte board. The case was ass, cooling was mediocre at best, the PSU blew up after 6 hours, but at least I knew to put an SSD as my boot drive. 

 

My second build was a budget point of sales machine bc my dad wanted me to put my skills to the test instead of just sitting there idling when he could a similar PC for less at best buy down the road. Setup can be found here: https://pcpartpicker.com/user/nathanpete/saved/#view=ZpKz7P

Was originally an mATX MSI board, but it wouldn't post, so I thought it was the CPU, returned the CPU, it was "bad" too, but I returned the mobo instead. It turned out to be the mobo that was bad, so I prob returned a perfectly good i3-8100 to B&H. The cable grommets were covered up when u installed an mATX board, and bc I was just going to use a single 8GB 2400 MHz stick (cheaper than 2, and he would never know the difference) I just went for an ITX board. It all ended up perfectly. Good thing the Win 10 Pro was free through Trek, who has exclusivity rights to my dad's store. 

 

I was being hired to do two systems this past spring for customers that contacted me (were actually other teachers at my career center, one had grant money, the other was a VR rig for home), but both projects got cancelled before I even built the system (F U Adam), bc corona. In fact the VR rig parts list was actually mediocre at best bc my partner Adam shut me up before I could comment and make changes. I was pissed, and the day after it was cancelled, I created a parts list on PCPP, that at the time, was so much better (3600>2600X, NVME M.2 > SATA M.2, faster RAM, etc.) for literally $0.01 more. We had already bought the parts and it would work for a VR flight sim, but it could be better.

Other than a year of learning at the career center using Cisco ITE 7.0 and TestOut PC Pro (I am going for a second year for networking next year), that is my only hands on experience.

The people assembly the server racks are factory workers in china at Foxconn and Supermicro. EVERYONE uses these two for their server parts. From Apple, Facebook, Google, HPE, Dell, and so on. He could work as a field technician and deploy them and do the initial setup for clients but that's not really hands on with any hardware and more networking and configuring things. An engineering sys admin will be swapping out parts occasionally but the biggest I have seen is a benchmarking engineer. They swap parts in and out like crazy. During my internship as a benchmark engineer we would install hundreds of terrabytes of memory a week and install hundreds of CPUs from EPYC to XEONs and ARMs. You also are in UNIX a lot so knowing some bash or python scripting is very useful. But that's more hardware than software so I would say go for this OP. You get to play with a lot of unreleased hardware that costs more than your house

Ty, I kinda want to mark your response as Solved, but I also don't want to close this discussion. Looks like I will have to tell my school counselor that I have changed my mind on college. Hopefully I haven't missed too many opportunities, but it will prob still be an online college since I really don't want to pay that extra to be on a campus (learning, not living, still more expensive).

If you apply for financial aid it takes into account living expenses and other expenses like books and needed materials. So I wouldn't worry about the cost. Also education is an investment. You spend $16,000 on student loans for example but in return your base pay is higher and you have a better outlook in the career field. The government is also very nice with student loans and are there to help you. You get 150% of the time to graduate until you need to start making payments. They also give you a 6 month grace period after you graduate until the first payment. Also there are tax incentives for your parents like the AOC and LLC and if they don't claim you then you will get the money.

Don't use anecdotal evidence for something like this. For all we know they could have gone to a private college that was $60,000/yr and made the minimum amount on their payments. For CS it really doesn't matter what college you go to and the same goes for what your GPA is. What matters is work experience, being active in clubs/extra curricular activity, and knowing your shit. I also know someone who has $230,000 in debt with a history degree. They are currently unemployed living with their parents and are defaulting on their payments. I also know someone who went to the same school as this person and are an electrical engineering with $22,000 in loans and are making a great starting salary and will be able to pay off their loans and live comfortably within 4 years
