Epyc board with only 6 slots by asrock RACK

Asrock Rack has created a EPYC Rome board with only 6 slots for 8 memory channels. while nothing new for them given their history of making weird WS/server boards it is the first we've seen of a strange epyc board.

So what happens when a motherboard displays a different number of memory slots than expected? This is what happens with the new ASRock Rack ROME6U-2L2T motherboard. It supports AMD EPYC processors, both Naples and Rome, which have eight channel memory. Even at 1 module per channel, we expect a minimum of eight memory slots. But for this motherboard, there is only six.

This means that this motherboard, at best, runs in six-channel mode. With a central IO die, like Rome, this means that overall memory bandwidth is reduced by a quarter (or a fourth). For Naples, this gets even weirder, because there is no central IO die, and it means one chiplet out of the four does not have access to memory, similar to how Naples-based Threadripper systems had two chiplets unable to directly access memory.

 

The board has 4 pcie4.0 16x slots

3 U.2 each upto pcie gen4 8x

14 sata ports 12 via mini SAS

dual intel 10gb lan

dual intel 1gb lan

ASPEED AST2500

6 fan headers

2 rear USB 3

1 USB2.0 and 1 USB 3.0 header along with a com

also a interesting thing. its a 12VO only board

 

This board seems like it would be a good start to a very small size storage server ether HDD or NVME

thats part of who asrock RACK is, they also have some of the few WS/server boards for Am4. they are really sensitive about you leaving off the rack part

With all those storage connectors this 100% looks lke it's designed for storage servers, those don't need 8 channel memory. However I'd still advise against first gen EPYC because of that memory locality problem with one of the dies.

The connectors near the U.2, SATA, and M.2, are called Slimline, SlimSAS, etc. And it has a transfer rate of up to 24Gb/s

Agreed. Depending on the parity method, ZFS is multi-threaded. It ensures that the CPU isn't the bottleneck when rebuilding an array back to fault tolerance too.

So Intel's 12VO specs.

Can't remember on top of my head, but didn't 12VO move basically everything to the onto the board, including SATA power cables too. I meant rather than having SATA power directly from the PSU, it's actually powered by the board itself, which is why there is a 4 pin all by itself on the edge of the board.
