So who else got a free Nest Mini from Google?

So I guess Google is giving away free Nest Minis to qualifying members. Basically, you just have to have been a premium member since May 19. I've been one for years and never expected anything like this. I was just looking at apps in the store and suddenly I got a popup saying I was selected to receiver a free Nest Mini. Pretty cool deal. I chose the chalk color since I always go with black. I decided it would be nice to have something stand out a bit but not overly standout lol.

So who else received a free one and which color did you choose?

I got two surprisingly, I'd guess it was because we are all in a family group or smth.

I chose one charcoal and one pink/

I agree Google isn´t giving away these for free with no intention. of course they want new customers to get into their ecosystem. that's why Amazon is selling their Echos almost at almost production cost (the same is to say about their kindle devices).

It's more advised to condense them to say what they are

Like this

I just wanted to point out that companies often don't make money on some products because they want people to get them into their "ecosystem". That is probably going to be the case with Xbox series X  and PS 5 . Due to to rising digital game sales sony and microsoft wil likely sell  their consoles at only a bit over production cost and get their money from 30% cut from digital gamesales

Oh consoles are notorious for not being profitable

People will likely but the console Sony or Microsoft will lose money and then they will be profitable with they accessories etc

And I'm pretty sure with Navi and zen 2 coming to consoles

I mean they can only be so expensive since they are catered to kids so no more than 500 bucks they wont have a profitable margin on the console

AMD is using some very expensive silicon plus SSD so if they want to sell them at 500 max they can’t make them really profitable.

how did we shift from someone who‘s simply happy because he/she got a free google nest to the pricing of nextgen consoles?

I received a free one just before Christmas. It's still in the box. I considered opening it once but realised there's no audio output jack so it's basically useless.

I mean, I went through the Taco Bell drive through the other day and they gave me a free drink because they made an extra by mistake. I had to be going through the drive through and buying something to qualify but I would still call it free.

Don't get me wrong, I get what you are saying. I was that argument all the time for regular perks such as the PS Plus and Live games they give you "free" every month. But those are regular advertised perks, this is just a random bonus they gave out to select members. You could argue this either way but I would call it free or at the very least free-ish.

As for the data. Blah, as long as they don't share my weird porn habits with my friends and family, I don't rarely care what Google does with my anonymized data lol.

Yeah, the thing is pretty much useless for music unless you don't mind listening from a single speaker. I don't enjoy music much if it isn't from true stereo speakers properly spaced apart. I can tolerate it if its in a pinch like for working in the garage or something though.

I really only plan to use this thing as an assistant and for device control.

Btw, I just got a second one for free, not from Google this time though. My dad's business partner has a box of like two dozen that they were using for promotional purposes so my dad just gave me one today. So now I have one here and one on the way. Guess I'll put one in the office and one in the bathroom.

Never mind BOM, the new next gen consoles would cost at least $1400 between the GPU and SSD alone if they were retail parts. These companies don't want to lose so much money subsidizing a console when people are willing to fork out retail price for a mobile phone that is half as powerful for the same price. What I expect the next gen consoles to pull is is the same "on a 3 year contract" nonsense.

1. If i don't specifically pay so that i qualify for the free stuff then yes, it's free

2. I'm not some big shot celebrity or some important figure with important secrets to keep. So long as they don't collect my credit card data to go shopping online or something like that then yes, it's free.

If a product is free it’s likely that you are the product ( mainly the case for software )

If premium anything has feature of giving special offers and promotions, then you do pay for stuff like that. The point is that they sent it to certain group who already paid for service. If it would be random across all users, then it really is free.

As for using your information. One person's data is not worth anything. 1000-100k of people, now we are talking. I also don't care if they collect my data. But how it's used is something I'm very weary about.

I wonder how much a „Netflix for google“ ( instead of collecting data and advertising you pay a flat monthly fee ) would cost if everyone would participate.

If you mean nest from Google

Probably not a whole lot

They are probably giving it away for left over stock

My echo dot was 30 bucks when my brother bought for me as a gift

No I mean that instead of collecting user data selling it and advertising you would pay for the many now „ free“ services

this thread‘s original topic seems to have somehow shifted a bit. Not that I don’t like that
