I've been close to that before (At least 70+kph/42mph) on my old 10-speed, also headed downhill with a strong wind behind me too.
I almost wasn't able to stop the bike but did, sliding the rear tire in the process and right when I stopped the tire blew - You coudn't have written a movie script more perfectly in how it happened.

 

Still have the bike but it's in rough shape now, that wild ride taking place back in the early to mid 80's.

86km yesterday in four and a half hours. I'm avoiding crowded places so I've modified my route. Turns out that it adds an addition 330m of climbing, so I did around 680m of vertical yesterday. I also hit 68.5kmph (so close!) while going down a big hill with a nice tail wind.

I have a Trek CheckPoint ALR5 and last Saturday I did 150 miles with almost 7000ft of altitude climbing. I'm trying again next Saturday for 200 miles in under 12 hours. I'm going to get some Profile Design Stryker V2 aerobars before then which should help a lot with wind. I also have my LeCol sport bibs coming

Two years ago I looked at the cycle lock loops that came with my house and thought we would never use them.

 

Now my wife cycles to work on her electric bike and I (when not locked down) cycle 10k each way to work!

 

My car has done under 400miles since Feb and I normally do about 800 a month!

Rebuilding an old hardtail today with parts from Aliexpress. Pretty fun to see the result, will post pics once complete, just waiting on some shifter cable outer housing to arrive, and some caps. Can't really test them until they arrive, but so far everything seems ok, but obviously fake, none of the stuff quite lines up and the quality is bad, but its the same material and shifters are pretty nice oob. 

 

So far:

- Replaced brake + gear shifters

- Replaced rear derailieur 

- New grips

- Replaced with old seat + seat post, but those are somewhat new anyway

 

Need to:

- New shifter cable runs

- Maybe new seat + seat post. Perhaps a dropper?

- Maybe new handlebars, going back to an old bike they are so short. 

- New tyres! these are so thin! must be like 1.9.

 

So far would not recommend getting the fake Shimano for a daily bike. This one was just a frame and wheels lying around, and hey its a 29er with good tread.

So if this thread is E-bike friendly, what is the best overall E-bike with a good motor that you can buy for under $4,000 ?

If possible:

No Brose motors because of reliability issues

No Bafang anything--bottom barrel chinese cheap crap.

Dapu isn't as good anymore because their top management quit so their quality is falling.

 

And arguments for Mid drive, direct drive and geared hub motors?

@FalkentyneDepends on what kind of riding you want to do, but I think that budget will cover one of the Specialized Vado or Vado SL (non-Brose) models. Need to decide whether you're looking for MTB, commuting, road, gravel, hybrid, city, etc type of bike and usage to really find options though.

 

Anyway. I have the Creo SL (the "comp carbon evo" model), same motor/battery/controller as the Vado SL. It's really sweet. Feels like riding a real bike, just faster. Downside, for some, is the power is not insane like you would get on the Brose model or non Specialized models (bafang, etc), so if you're looking for a very low effort bike (eg for commuting without sweating) the SL models, IMO, aren't it.

 

As for mid vs others, I've only ever demoed/owned mids.

Looking for a zwift trainer to save up for. I have a few questions:

 

1) does it matter which bike you use, would I just get handed to by road bikers and their huge chainrings?

 

2) which is the best budget one. They are expensive? I don’t like rollers as already got one and doesn’t work well. Prefer the one with the cassette on.

Finished the shifters when the outer shifter cable came, no ends because they haven’t arrived yet and I’m excited.

 

Front shifter unfortunately didn’t index and broke, seems to be stuck? Rear shifter and derailleur works great. Would recommend buying the derailleur again, but not the shifters. Going to shelve this project I think.

I don't do much maintenance on my bike. I can take apart the drive train to clean it and put it back together, replace a tube, but that's about it. Trying to true a wheel is space magic as far as I'm concerned. I just take my bike into the shop every other year for maintenance.
