I used to ride 18s when I was riding across Canada. While it's nice when the roads are smooth and clear of debris, they puncture too easily and it's way too easy to get stuck in a crack in the road or something; forget about riding on anything but paved road, too. That's why I switched to the 28s.

I didn't like cycling in NZ that much. The road surface is a lot rougher than what I'm used to and road resistance becomes really noticeable. Bushwalking, though, NZ is world class and a photographer's paradise.

Probably in the cities it’s not so great, usually I prefer tracks, which is why I don’t have a road bike yet. They’re absolutely everywhere and really good fun.

Even though most of our roads are not maintained well, I’d still say go for another shot in Queenstown, and you can do plenty on the single tracks or gravel tracks that go anywhere you want. Even the roads aren’t too shabby. It’s quite crowded though. Te Anau is another place that is well worth it for cycling.

I’ll have to give Canada a shot when I get my education done. Sounds exciting.

Probably a second hand hardtail. Then you can go anywhere and they are usually tough bikes.

Shimano shifters are pretty good because you can shift down more than one gear at a time, but I don’t think you can on SRAM, however the SRAM group sets are pretty nice. Most new bikes will have disc brakes, which are all pretty decent, especially if it gets wet. Road bikes usually have the other sort of brakes (forgot the name), like a clamp-thing.

You’d probably be looking for a 3x8 Shimano Altus setup for that price for a new-ish bike. I would imagine there would be a budget 2x11 alternative for a road bike.

I don’t know much about road bikes, sorry. Marlin is made by Trek, they are an entry level mountain bike. Usually newer ones have fatter tyres now. You can fit road tyres to them though.

I need to start doing this every day, 10 mile rides in under an hour.

I'm on specialized mountain bike modified with rear rack and bar ends. tires are also changed to a hybrid road trail. With saddle bags I can easy get a weeks worth of food for me.

I was doing a 5 mile ride I can do in about 20 mins, then I would rip around and head back, fairly flat, wish my bike didn’t get stolen.

Maybe I need to try road tires but honestly I don't mind having fairly off-road tires for road biking. I don't feel a ton of resistance or anything, it's not uncomfortably loud or shaky or anything, and it's super nice to have the option to go off-road or on dirt trails which I do a lot.

Hm, yeah, I do want to try it some day but for the riding I do I feel like it would be more of a downgrade. I dunno though; I just need to try them, lol.

Besides my brakes (still haven't shipped :() I don't really see myself doing any other changes to my current bike, although I still really want an ebike conversion.

That reminds me of one of my near-misses. I was on the Tour Arctic on the Dempster Highway (an 800km dirt "road" through the Canadian low Arctic ). I was bombing down this mountain after having just crossed over from the Yukon into the NWT and got a flat. Now, keep in mind, I was going around 52kmph at the time. I somehow managed to stop in a huge cloud of dust without crashing. I actually had to climb off the road (it's a few metres above the rest of the terrain as a lot of it sits on permafrost) just to get out of the dust cloud so I could change my tube and look for anything sharp that may be inside the tyre. Now, with my bike, (Giant TCX-1) I have to disconnect the rear brake to take the tyre off. So I changed the tube, took out the sharp bit of whatever that had forced its way inside, climbed back on the road, and continued bombing down the mountain.

As I reached 60kmph, I was thinking, "Wow, I'm going pretty fast, I should probably slow down on this loose gravel" only to hit the rear brake a little and find that nothing happened. "Oh fuck," I thought. I had forgotten to re-connect the rear brake, and like hell I was going to touch the front brakes. So I just had to ride it out. My friends were yelling, "SLOW DOWN!" but I couldn't. I just had to coast and hope that I could maintain control of the bike. Thankfully, once the terrain levelled out, I managed to coast to a stop.

 Woops.

I do some light riding on a Jamis Coda Sport, 2013 I think. Hybrid tires with a little dry rot. Farthest I've gone is a 20 mile round trip.

I want to make a shout out to replacing the plastic valve caps  on the tires with metal ones. The plastic ones used to break often but the metals ones don't and look a lot better.

I bet, I can hardly imagine going that fast down a paved road (although this is in a neighbourhood with shitty drivers, lol), much less doing that on gravel with no brakes. Glad you made it out fine tho xD

I bet, I can hardly imagine going that fast down a paved road (although this is in a neighbourhood with shitty drivers, lol), much less doing that on gravel with no brakes. Glad you made it out fine tho xD

Fastest I've ever hit was 76.6kmph on a hill in Northern Ontario.

System Specs: Second-class potato, slightly mouldy
