Unless you are doing something that utilizes more than 8GB of ram, I would just roll with the 8gb of 1866 RAM personally.

go with the 8gb. i have yet to see a real use case scenario for any more then 8gb unless your dying to run a ram disk for whatever god awful reason

To be fair, if he is doing any sort of video editing 12GB would help with larger files. I consistently go over 8GB of ram when editing, which is why I went with 16gb. But yeah, if his PC is just for general use and gaming I don't see the need for 12GB over 8GB especially if it's slower.

Yes im aware of that cause i do a lot of that myself but since he didnt specify i figure hes probably just gaming plus i typically dont like to mix different ram sticks.. i know most times it doesnt cause issues but ehh to iffy for my liking

My Ram is the cheapest kingstons I could find which are clocked at 1333 MHz, they run at 1600 MHz 24/7 with no problem, since you got kingston 1600 MHz, I'm sure you could OC them one notch with ease.

I multi task a load, my pc on idle uses 5-6 gigs of ram minimum most of the time.

those are lightweight programs, also I have ~250 tabs open in chrome, I run a bunch of MMOs in the background, one of my screens are used as a TV (always playing random stuff on my pc) and then random other programs depending on the time of day / how I feel. my pc is a beast so I don't have to compromise.

also what you mentioned has nothing to do with multi tasking, those are basically what I call essentials.

I was going to make a serious response to this but I can't take someone running 250 tabs seriously. Try an RSS reader.

lol. there are a lot more ways I can go about it than just using an RSS reader, I'm just too lazy and don't mind the 250 tabs since they don't even take much of my ram. I should sort them though. ok mate if you want to make a serious response that doesn't include saying that the programs you listed are what you'd call heavy duty. by all means.

OP said he is using the PC for gaming and not editing or anything more intensive. Most people don't run multiple MMO's in the background, they just open the game when they want to play it. Most people don't run 250 tabs because it would be quicker to type in the URL of the website you want to find as opposed to searching through that many tabs for the correct page. Even with Photoshop and Sony Vegas (in addition to those programs mentioned before) with a 3 hour recording imported into it, I'm not at 5GB of ram used.

If you enjoy running all of that stuff on your PC, go right ahead. For the majority of people, that's extremely overkill. I know my PC is powerful, I don't need an excessive amount of programs open to prove it to myself.

well if you read that post again, I actually did mention that it was I who do these things and basically just added that off topic note just to say that 8 gb isn't always enough. (the programs you mentioned before are essentials and always run on most people's pc/equivalent counterparts.)

The problem with typing in URLs is that you forget them, the problem with bookmarks is that when they are too many they are a pest to find, I got one window with general crap which is basically just youtube videos and I know what each of those tabs are. another window open for my work related stuff which I always keep open, yet another window full of tabs which is full of my tech related articles and the forums etc. Another window which has all my anime related tabs and whatever. my harddrives are rather full so I have another window with tabs full of free cloud storage solutions or video uploading sites so that I can manage those, I use my browser for far more than most would, I never stated otherwise, I actually stated that I multi task a lot(which should generally state to those who've been around for a while that I am an advanced user and not part of the majority) and then just gave the side not of chrome, if you use an RSS reader, good for you, I prefer using it this way, my pc can handle it this way, don't underestimate me just because I do something out of the ordinary.

I expected better answers.

Look at it this way

2x4GB running at 1866 in Dual channel with 1T timings will with almost certainty perform better then 12GB running at 1333 in Single channel with timings that may not match and 2T command rate.

for gaming that won't make much of a difference.
