Is it worth it to upgrade or just build a new pc

Wondering if it would be worth bothering to upgrade my cpu in my current rig. been wanting to build a new pc to get a ryzen cpu but as my current build has been pretty solid and i recently added a SSD to it. 

 

Current build is over 10 years old now.

 

AMD FX 4100

16 gbs of ram 

Radeon HD 7850

500gb SSD 

2tb HDD for storage.

 

thinking if going up to an AMD FX 8xxx would be worth it at this point or to just hold off and build my new ryzen rig later.

I wouldn't bother with 8 core FX CPU's. You'll be gaining no single core performance and will only be adding two cores. Of course I don't know what you're doing with your PC, but if it's anything but VM's or video rendering; those two cores will be doing nothing for you.

You can of course transfer the SSD to your new system too.

Well, you could probably buy an 8 core FX for very little, since they aren't worth much these days. But if you're happy with the performance levels you're getting right now, there really isn't any need to upgrade. I would consider an 8 core if it's below $40, and if your use case needs it. Just a little thing with AM3+, if you have a 780 chipset mobo you probably shouldn't upgrade to an 8 core, since some of the 780 boards can catch fire when they are made to power an 8 core.

 

If you decide to upgrade to ryzen (which would be a CPU,Mobo,RAM upgrade), you might want to consider upgrading some other parts depending on circumstance. If you have an older, lower quality PSU you might want to get something better, you may want to get a more modern case (this is really dependant on your needs and aesthetics), and your GPU is pretty outdated for most modern games. Even an RX 570($70)/580($95-100) which can be found used for quite little online these days would be a big upgrade. These are things you probably would want to consider, an upgrade-while-you're-in-there kind of thing. Obviously storage would transfer over pretty easily.

i would be sourcing an entire new computer case and all. as of now my cpu is my only bottle neck i can see. i've always been sort of "ok" with what i have gotten out of it as i use it mostly to game "WoW, Killing floor 2, CS:GO even Apex Legends is playable surprisingly" but wanna be able to get out of the low-medium settings and still get 60+. but im also trying to stay sub $1k on the new system

Okay, if you want I could make a part list for you. I'm guessing you're in the US, if you tell me your budget and any case/aesthetic preferences I can account for those too. The prices I gave for used RX 570/580 are cards that can be bought off aliexpress (these are an alright choice if you don't have access to good used cards), you may or may not be able to find better prices locally (probably not during corona).

Get a new system. $1k gets you a lot (assuming USD) 

 

This would be suitable for 1440p gaming even.

i have some ideas for what im going to be building already but just really wanted to know if i putting that fx 8 core would be worth it before building my next one. but thank you though.

that is the 1600AF cpu. clocks very similar to the 2600 if you dont need that extra.

Yeah an R5 3600 and RX 5700XT are well within budget, you'll get really good performance out a system like that. Really good value as well.

 

EDIT:

The MSI B450 'Max' motherboards support 3rd gen Ryzen out of box (despite the PCpartpicker warning) and are actually really good for vlaue and VRM cooling. 

 

Get a good 550W+ 80+ Gold PSU. The Corsair RMx is really good quality. 

 

At the very least get 2x8BG of 3200MHz Cl16 RAM or faster if possible, Ryzen loves fast dual channel memory.
