Car is stuttering

Apollo Refugio

Hi, I used to go onto this forum often but I haven't in a while, but I returned and my question lies in with this video of me trying to accelerate my 2007 Mercedes Benz GL450 from the stop sign. (https://youtu.be/OIM3z0Kdnlo) It is just going up to 2000-3000 RPM while not accelerating, then randomly it starts accelerating again. This didn't happen when I turned on the car and got out of my drive way, but after to where I got to a stop sign. I have other error codes I got from my OBD2 port which maybe could be a result of this error. We plan on replacing the coolant thermometer but what else should I do. My running temperature for my engine was also 187 F. Thank you!

The first code is the one to be worried about. Your thermostat wont cause your problem. How many miles are on your car, have you ever done the timing chain on it? And lastly did you check your oil level?

If the cam advance mechanism is oil driven then putting the wrong weight of oil in can have an effect on them.   It seems the advise in your app is to change the oil which would indicate this to be a potential cause.    Make sure the manufacturer spec oil is put in and try this before you go throwing parts at it.

What @mr moosesaid. I have seen something like this before on an Audi, sludge or the non proper oil can cause this and in my case repairing the customer's car changing to the correct oil fixed the issue. Your problem may or may not be fixed the same way because bad or the wrong oil can also cause damage to the cam advance mechanism, I suggest getting this looked at ASAP before things get more expensive. Also check the oil level and for oil leaks, and who knows sometimes I have seen sensors give false readings.

When I first saw the thread title I was like "B-B-B-Beep-B-Beep?"

Change the oil as suggested and see what it does.

If it continues get someone to confirm these exact codes are still occurring to point the finger in that direction, then go from there. I'd have to say from the looks of it the engine just isn't making power making me think it's an actual engine timing problem similar to when a timing belt on one slips a cog yet it still runs - Just doesn't want to rev/go due to lack of power from the engine.

I'd check the camshaft's variable timing solenoid and work down the list from there if doing the work on it yourself.

Yes, a problem can cause other codes to pop up too that's only a symptom(s) of the root cause.

An experienced tech can look at all those and put the pieces together to say what it probrably is.

Good luck.

If you are stepping on the gas and the car takes a bit to actually take off it sounds like your transmission is slipping.

If I am understanding what your saying right.

I dunno.  In general, perhaps.  They seem to do a fair job here for some reason.  Might be much better on a Mercedes forum of course though.

It could be a number of things. The head, cylinders, or transmission might have issues. The Volvo I just repaired needed every engine seal/gasket to be replaced since many got burned out when the boss's friend borrowed the car and drove it through 8 of hell's circles.

Spoiler

The friend also destroyed the coolant return hose, thermometer, and a few cylinder rings.

Why would you not grab a car and see what it can do? He put a little under 700 miles in two or 3 days and I'm assuming he never kept that thing below 80mph.

It was 4 days of work getting everything checked. We decided to just get it "totaled" or w/e with insurance and then get a new Volvo, though I wanted an Audi or BMW for the delivery vehicle.

@OP definately get an oil change, you might get lucky and that'll fix it, but its likely your vvt solenoid is stuck open (due to not getting regular maintenance)  you'll want to take it into a shop and have them take a look at it.  this isnt gonna be something you'll enjoy doing in your driveway.  fork over the couple hundred bucks and get it fixed properly.

Ive given my fair share of cars hell, even some that we tried to kill intentionally. Either he was doing something special or volvo has some real quality control issues.

I drove from NC to AZ a few years ago. drove for about 30 hours straight and 90% of that was doing 90+ and my preludes engine wasnt that bad off lol.

Your P0015 Camshaft over-retarded code means that the camshaft timing is out enough to cause performance/fuel economy issues.

Most vehicles today are equipped with a technology called variable camshaft timing, and each manufacturer has a different way of doing this. Honda has VTEC, Toyota has VVTI, Ford has VCT, etc. all different acronyms, all different methods of adjusting camshaft timing.

The camshaft is responsible for opening and closing the intake and exhaust valves on the engine. on VCT engines, there is a component called a phaser that is connected to the camshafts, which is driven by the timing chain or belt. this chain/belt wraps the cylinder head or heads (for V6/V8/V10/V12 configurations), sometimes it will also power a coolant pump, but it primarily is connecting the camshaft and the crankshaft. it is reponsible for ensuring everything is timed correctly, so that intake valves open as the piston is going down to suck in air, and opens exhaust valves after the combustion cycle to expel the exhaust gases. If it is a chain driven system, that phaser requires oil. if the wrong viscosity of oil is in the engine, it has the potential to cause timing issues like this. Variable camshaft timing basically means that the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) will adjust the necessary parameters to advance or retard the camshaft and spark timing based off throttle, vehicle speed, etc. it will adjust depending on if you are driving like a race car, or cruising down the highway and trying to save fuel.  over-retarded timing means the camshafts are opening the intake valves too late. In my experience in the industry, I have seen everything from the simple wrong oil or faulty variable timing solenoids, to the worse cases of faulty phasers or also a stretched timing chain cause this problem.

You could try changing the oil like mentioned previously by other users, as it is the cheapest possible fix. If this does not solve your issue, I would suggest seeing a technician so they can diagnose the code and tell you exactly what is wrong. (The worst case scenario in this situation can sometimes be an extremely expensive repair).

Your other code, P0128, is a very simple code. It is widely used across many makes and models, indicating an issue with the thermostat. It could either be stuck closed or stuck open. Typically, the fix for this one is a new thermostat. I have experienced this one first hand on my personal vehicle, and a thermostat fixed my issue.

If I am understanding what your saying right.

On a benz of this era, there would be a Transmission Control Module, or TCM, which would monitor the shift logic and the opening and closing of the shift solenoids. It is unlikely that he would have a slipping transmission, and not have a DTC code or warning lamp illuminated for a transmission issue. P0015 camshaft timing codes likely cause a symptom like his description.
