I'm really lost on what motherboard to buy on a 5900x, my first option was the tomahawk x570 but it came defective (fan of chipset at 100% always), but for the price I don't see anything else... any recommendations?

Just RMA it?

 

asus TUF boards and Gigabyte Aorus boards are good if you want X570, plenty of decent B550 options as well. Just make sure they have BIOS flashback

The list is literally there, I dont know where you buy from so I cant check prices for you either.

 

5900x is rated just like the 3900x, so you have to go on or above Tier C especially if you care about overclocking. X570 isnt cheap in general so if you're price sensitive, go for B550 or other chipsets

The tomahawk will handle the 16 core just fine, It's quite a solid board if you want to go for it.

thanks. nearly bought a x570 crosshair viii - i dable a bit of overclocking but nothing serious. And I am using a deepcool assassin III.

Hello! will i have any problems if i buy a X570 Tomahawk and use 4+4 cpu power connector ? because my psu only has 1 8pin that can be split to 4+4, but the X570 has 1x8pin and a 1x4pin. my CPU is R7 3800XT and i wont OC it i expect precision boost to give nice clocks since its a XT cpu. will my pc shut down or not boot or some other issues ?

No, You only need the 8 pin, a single 8 pin can easily provide 384w of power which is enough for any am4 cpu, the other one is used for heavy overclocking like ln2, which under ambient, you can't really do anyways.

I can also go for a B550 Tomahawk wich is $20 cheaper im not sure wich 1 to get i think of the x570 its classified better but also people say it has a bad fan on the chipset or whatever.

My options are

$190 B550 Tomahawk

or

$210 X570 Tomahawk

both new on box from shop in my city not buying online.

The x570 tomahawk is technically better, but honestly both will handle the 3800x (or the xt) just fine, either of them will do the job. The difference between x570 and b550 is that on b550 the lanes that are wired to the cpu are gen 4 but the lanes that are wired to the chipset are gen 3, on x570, the lanes that are wired to the cpu and to the chipset are gen 4.

It's just the chipset fan that is there to cool it, some people do get bothered by it.

Hello, and thanks for this list! I'm building my first pc and the massive amount of MOBO's can be overwhelming. It is definitely the component I have spent the most time checking out.

 

I was set to get a tomahawk b550 according to your list as it seems to be the best bang for your money, but I've seen  as many reviews that worship it, as ones saying it is overrated, and should get a gaming X570 Gaming Edge Wifi for a similar price or an Asus ROG strix b550-f Gaming. I understand it may depend on usage, but can't seem to find any major differences, could you recommend one? Maybe all of them are overkill for my build?

 

Main components  are zen 5 5600x (maybe a3600x if there are good deals on BF) and rtx 3070 ( maybe an amd if I can get my hands on launch day)

 

My usage is mainly gonna be 2k gaming at 165hz and image editing, but not much 3d.

 

I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you may want to share.

All of them are currently under 200 euros, though a 160 euro price range would be great as prices seem to be falling hard. would the tomahawk x570 be a great upgrade, or not worth it for my usage? ( I think I'll be able to snag it for the 160 euro ballpark) I'm in France.

And could you tell me what makes the gaming edge so bad? On paper they don't look that different.

Both of them have offers in UK, eigther AC Valhala on MSI , or 40cashback on ASUS.

 

This is for a 5600X .

Will I see any difference if i change to a x570 crosshair viii. I bought a x570 tomahawk - worried as my pcie ssd (gigabyte (not the nvme kind) is close to the gpu. Worried the GPU may be choked.

@Newbie malaysia the GPU wont be choked no matter what board and M.2 SSD you have on the board, it doesnt work like that. As for whether the SSD will get warmer, my assumption is that warm air from the graphics card (even if the GPU is at 80C, heatsink exhaust will only be around 45C) is better than no air at all, so idle temperature could be higher but full load temperature wont be so high, especially if the graphics card isnt doing anything but the fan is still spinning.

@Jurrunio What about b550 tomahawk wifi or the b550 ASUS TUF GAMING B550-PLUS wifi ... both cheaper .

I must say i won't do any any OC with the 5600x , il also buy a 6800XT and a 32gb ram (4x8gb for the ryzen). It will be gaming pc.

Ryzen 5000 CPUs share power ratings as 3000 series with the same core count, so yeah you could go much worse and it would still be ok. It depends on what else you want on a board, say USB-C on the rear IO section or USB-C front pane header support.

Either of those should work perfectly fine, though there is no WIFI version of the B550 Tomahawk. Perhaps you're thinking of the Gaming Edge WIFI?

MSI B550 Tomahawk seems like the best performer out of boards in your budget.

I'll get a pcie 4.0 ssd  but i dont think i'll go for 2 of them.

If i manage to get my budget up to 300€ is there anything worth the extra money or shall i stick with what you advised me ?

EDIT : I live in France but i can purchase from any big shop in Europe  as exemple the x570 tomahawk is only 206€ in Germany but 270 in France

@Mateyyy Dang. Yes Edge has Wifi. But that's not really a need only if possible. 

 

My PC how i want it to be :

Lian Li Lancool II Mesh Performance or RGB

32 gb ram (4x 8gb)  i dont know wich to buy yet aswell

i would like the new 1T samsung 980 pro so i think that's PCIe Gen 4.0 x4 (for windows and primary games)

1 more NVME maybe cheaper

6800xt still waiting

i got already the 5600x

1 CPU cooler which i don't know yet 

Monitor i also got the dell s2721dgf

Do you think the B550 Tomahawkwould meets all my requierments ?

 

Edit later. From what i saw now there is no B550 to have PCIe Gen 4 x16 and x4 , so that i can use the 6800XT and the Samsung NVME.

I could get the ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI) at 170 pounds since i get 40  from 210 full price cashabck with the new Asus promotion.

MSI MAG X570 TOMAHAWK WIFI at 210 pounds also gives you ASSASSIN'S CREED VALHALLA wich is still a small win (40 pounds game).

Both would be on paper at almost a b550 price.
