Python or Java?

Hi,

 

I've just finished my last Trimester at Uni for the year.

 

An got some spare time now, an would like to learn coding as a little side hobby.

 

Just wanting to know what a good coding language to learn as a starting point.

 

I've done a little research and came down to two Java or Python.

 

I mainly want to make applications for Windows , Android and Android TV.

 

Any help on this would be great.

go python. it's the most beginner friendly, plus you don't have to compile it. 

otherwise try JavaScript. it's not the same as java. 

We can't Benchmark like we used to, but we have our ways. One trick is to shove more GPUs in your computer. Like the time I needed to NV-Link, because I needed a higher HeavenBench score, so I did an SLI, which is what they called NV-Link back in the day. So, I decided to put two GPUs in my computer, which was the style at the time. Now, to add another GPU to your computer, costs a new PSU. Now in those days PSUs said OCZ on them, "Gimme 750W OCZs for an SLI" you'd say. Now where were we? Oh yeah, the important thing was that I had two GPUs in my rig, which was the style at the time! They didn't have RGB PSUs at the time, because of the war. The only thing you could get was those big green ones.

pythons way easier and seems to be in higher demand these days. its good to learn java too though. If you know java, you can pick up python in a day or two

I would start with Java. That's what I learned at University when i started and it was really great. In my opinion, Java is is a little easier to read, and the JVM means, you can run your programm on every System, which runs Java, so basically every system. Java is also a lot faster than Python, but i don't think that really matters for a beginner.
If you really want to learn programming, i would also recommend C. I know it is really old, but it is still relevant, and as fast as it gets, if you don't want to write machine code.

I would also advice against JavaScript as a beginner. In My opinion it is not really beginner friendly and it's also not considered a "real" programming langugae, but a script language.

I think you mean C#
C++ is a lot different than Java.
For Android, you should use Kotlin, Java is still supported, but Kotlin is optimized for android and recommended by google, as far as i know

They're barely similar.

 

Python and Java are both good languages. Try learning both. I learned Java first in grade school and Python in college. It can depend on what you want to do, but if you're looking for an "easier" language, try Python.

I really love Python, it is the language I use the most day to day, but if you want to make Android applications it is not where you want to start. There is a reason that almost every computer science related education starts out with Java. It has a very friendly compiler, runs everywhere and teaches you the fundamentals of a C-like object oriented language, which you can later apply to languages like C# which is very similar, or C++ if you want to venture to the lower levels where you have more control. The book Big Java - Early Objects is a pretty good place to start.

Google has certainly popularized Kotlin, but there is nothing Android specific or optimized about Kotlin.

 

Kotlin is a JVM language, same as Java. It compiles to Java Bytecode, same as Java. It runs on the JVM or, in the case of Android, on Dalvik/ART, same as Java.

 

This also means it has to deal with some of the same quirks as Java, such as type erasure for generics.

 

With that being said, Kotlin is a more modern language, but Java is still more popular, especially in enterprise. Learning Java is a good thing to do if you're looking for a career in this field.

 

Edited to add: You can even mix Kotlin and Java in the same app (on a per-class basis), which is required because lots of popular libraries are still written in Java and haven't been ported to Kotlin.

If specifically and only Windows, you can't go wrong with C#, that should be your #1 choice (but then again, you are tied to windows), however, for cross-platform there are other options available :)

Forget about Python and C++ for this, I'm trying to save you a lot of headache and confusion, there's little android market for them compared to the former :D

Python because it's interpreted meaning you don't have to compile it and then run it. You can just run it. Also it's implicitly typed which makes things simpler (for learning, not actual programming). Then you can take what you learned in Python and apply it to Java. Java uses the 'everything and the kitchen sink' approach so it is very verbose. Good for making complex projects in but not for learning.

Python is easier to start off with, from the experience I've had with both.  But really, if you have an aptitude for programming, you should be good with either one.  You'll recognize a lot of the same concepts in one once you're familiar with the other.  

 

That said, I wish my first programming class would have been Python instead of Java.  It's just easier to do everything.

Learn Python then C. As Python is on top of C so if you needed to do some special workloads or optimization you can write them in C to get super fast performance but that's also pretty advanced. Java is easy but also bloated

Funny that you say that. I am a beginner myself and C is pretty annoying compared to Java. The memory and pointer management is a pain in the ass to work with.

You can mix and match Kotlin and Java in a project. If you're talking about contributing/modifying those libraries then definitely correct. Otherwise you could happily write nothing but Kotlin.

This line alone seems to indicate to me that the choice really only is Java/Kotlin. I'm also partial to that as it's what I first learned on in school. In retrospect, I'm personally happy I had started with a C-style language as it made the transition over to C# much easier. Sure Java gets quite verbose (less than Objective-C at least!) and there's a good bit of boilerplate to do even the simplest things but it was a good learning experience. I think, overall, starting on Java would be best for you currently as it may have benefits down the road as you add more to your repertoire. Including Python.

Really, an autodidacting beginner only cares about two things: The availability of well put together and highly structured information to help them learn, and the ability to take on the kind of projects that they are interested in.

Given these two considerations, I would propose that a beginner should choose Java. After only a few months of active practice, a new Java developer should be able to start picking up Kotlin with little to no trouble.

Python isn't really a good beginner option for Android.

My dude... Anything you feel confortable with, Javascript is also a really good option. Try anything, the most confortable one should be the starting point, remember, the language doesn't have to limit you, the only limiter should be your logic, focus on that, after this, it's only about syntax, and the syntax you can learn in the documentation, everything else is on StackOverflow (XD). Learn as much as you can.
