[GOG] Freespace 2 - Free - no DRM

WkdPaul

Damn, I've already bought this. Great classic space fighter though. Lots of mods for it on the Hard-Light forums, including the entire first game remade in the new engine with new assets. It's actually the only way to play the first game, which I found out the hard way. There's a mission where you have to escort a large freighter but it never gets exactly where it needs to be so it just spins around until it dies from enemy fire. There's no fix for it, and frankly GOG shouldn't even really bother selling the first game.

Nice, very good (old) GotY from the past. Brings lots of good memories.

You can add the game into your stream library as a non-steam game. I did the same with Witcher 3, since it was the same steam price but all the money went to cdpr and drm free

Wow, you've really been missing out. Here is my GOG library. Paid $0.00 for each and every game.

gog11.png.thumb.jpg.763ccd908d8410d84486eacbbcf7c7cb.jpg

gog22.png.thumb.jpg.a1de90d9c56c1f8d6ba21194e569b093.jpg

gog33.png.thumb.jpg.e9c6c92de8fd3c7bd8921d23bc869dad.jpg

And don't let the demos fool you. They're some of the best and longest demos I've ever played. The System Shock demo is of the new System Shock game that has still not been released and it's a really good demo. It pushes my hardware quite a bit because you cannot change any of the graphics options yet so keep that in mind if you by chance download and play the System Shock demo(if it's even still available). The Shadow Tactics Blades of the Shogun demo feels as if you own the full game while you're playing it because it's so long. It's no longer possible to get Warsow on GOG so I feel blessed to have snagged that game for free a few years ago. Shadow Warrior 2 is by far the best GOG game I own. Also, fortunately, Kathy Rain was given out for free on Steam not too long ago and Stories Untold was given out for free on the Epic Games store not too long ago as well.

Why would you want to? Unless you launch everything through Steam there's no reason to. Adding a non-Steam game to Steam also super sucks. Even if it's game that's available on Steam it won't find and auto update the info, and I haven't seen a way to add anything meaningful of your own in terms of box art or anything.

Exactly. Set the game to auto update and launchers to start on startup, make sure you do at least one clean boot a week to update everything, then close them out and use steam. Or any launcher you'd prefer to use.

GOG games don't need a launcher. You can download the install files directly and install from there. I don't understand why everyone thinks the place that touts DRM-FREE requires a launcher. And once it's installed you can do whatever you want with it.

Going there and logging in is a 15-45 second process. Isn't finding a file to download the same thing you do with roughly 100% of the games you download and play?

Im kind of laughing how this isn't an acceptable answer to anyone.

I prefer using a stand-alone launcher as much as possible.  My Steam Library is the largest, followed by Epic (sweet free games is the only reason, and 99% of them I wont ever play), then I have a few games with Glyph, Origin, Blizzard and lets not forget games with their own stand-a-lone launchers (and however many other icons I have on my desktop)

When my PC boots up, the only thing I have come up (besides monitoring Apps) on launch is Steam.  I don't want the rest coming up until I tell them too - because that's my preference.

Do you guys just keep multi-terabytes of games downloaded?  My internet connection is such that to download a 30gb game from a normal type of game provider takes like 10-20 minutes.  My buddies in Cali take like 3 minutes with their connections.  I see no need to keep games downloaded (I don't play single player games often at all, at minimum I duo with the wife, or multiplayer with the gaming crew) unless I have to, to keep save information.

Yup. 7 TB's of space. Luckily, the 3TB I just added has 2.4 TB's free so only 3.3 to 4 or so TB's is actually filled up in total.

So you can click on them and have them up and running within a minute or two. Some of us play dozens of games a week. Today, I've already played League of Legends, Subnautica, Volgarr The Viking, GTA 5, Guns Up!, Star Wars Battlefront II and I'm now loading up Ghost Recon Wildlands to do the daily challenges. I just hit 110 hours in GRW and I've only had the game for 5 weeks now.

My why Ive already answered a few times.

I don't remember your why for preferring to use a stand-alone launcher as much as possible.

still don't understand the problem with my preference. Why does it matter?

It's not a problem. What matters is that using multiple launchers is simpler than you make it out to be. It's as simple as loading up Steam. Instead of clicking on one launcher, you click on another. Just as you do the Epic Games launcher. I'm just wondering why having all games in one launcher is preferred when using more than one is... simple as can be.

Just another place I have to go, log in and find a file to download.  It being on a browser, vs an App doesn't change that.

So ignore it. If you can't handle doing nothing but downloading it from another source, maybe you should just skip it. GOG is the absolute most hassle free store. And based on what you say, you wouldn't like FreeSpace anyways.

Someone needs to make an account that follows intransigent around like a fight announcer. "This week, the matchup you've been waiting for, in the Gif corner..."

"Surround yourself with professionals and never be the smartest person in the room" -Someone much smarter than I

Why - Launcher Fatigue (browser or app)

Its all simple - but each of us do things our own way.  I do not find anything difficult about any of it - I prefer Steam, its format, and it being an app, over GoG for sure, their website seems unintuitive to me, but only have used it this one time so that's a first user experience for me.  Lots and lots of ads.

Its just so much to handle.............................................................................

I probably wont like FreeSpace because of a lot of reasons, but very unlikely for any reason you can actually understand, being that you aren't me.

Thanks for the free game regardless, maybe one day my kid will download it through the Steam App some day.

What... On... Earth... Is... Launcher... Fatigue...?

but each of us do things our own way.

Yup. Just trying to understand why is all. For example, people buy garbage bags. People buy paper towels. Yet, they receive hundreds of free garbage bags from grocery shopping. And they have access to old shirts to wipe up things or they learn to not be so clumsy in a kitchen or certain areas of the house that require the use of a paper towel. People, their thoughts and behavior is tough to understand.

Again with the ads. I've never seen a single ad using multiple launchers.

Does anyone have any tips to getting into Freespace 2? I have it ready to install but I need a reason to actually play it. It looks boring.
