Kids are more tech savvy then parents think :D

Just witnessed something great.  

Atm programming a KNX installation in a house and on my break. I am sitting in the office of the owner and suddenly i hear a phone ringing loudly.

Que one of the sons entering the office and listening where its coming from. He gets a stool to open a closet (top door) and gets his phone, which was taken because of him having a fight with his brother yesterday.

He checks his messages and does some stuff to then puts it back while explaining this to me (he is 10 i think), making sure his dad wont notice (which he wont).

 

Learned that this happens alot, parents will take device away. Kids use each other devices to activate the find me feature and are still able to send messages and stuff

As technology advances, so do the neat tricks of the kids that use it.  This one is really nice though.

Hell, preteens and teens have burner phones these days as well.  Had a buddy take one from his kid the other day, after grounding him from his real phone.

Just wait till they end up with burner phones. By the time I was 14 I already had 4 burners. So my parents gave up on grounding me. Fun times

Also don't forget the kid who apparently resorted to using Twitter on the fridge when their phone was taken away, lol. Or me doing extremely scientific research as a teen with a Linux laptop and various other techniques of getting around certain rules and/or softwares.

Almost 20 years ago, I took a motherboard with a bad hard drive controller (murdered every HD I connected to it) and made a CD boot only system out of it, with components that generally worked in every Linux distro of the time. I had a collection of live CD distros to run on it. I was fully an adult, but I wouldn't be surprised if some kid somewhere was doing the same thing. I know I've heard of kids using live distros to get around being locked out of their computers, without leaving any trace.

There's a little Linux distro that can load into and then run out of the RAM as well IIRC, snappier than off a disc but I don't think you can save anything and ofc it's borked if you shut off the power. I forget the details but I think I fiddled with it at one point.

Ha I never had those limits. Thank god my parents were tech illiterate. I had 4 burners because id get grounded for going out at 1 or 2 AM so 4 burners

I'd say it's the opposite. Most parents dramatically overestimate the knowledge and skill kids have with computers and technology in general.

As for OP's post, I wouldn't say finding where your parents have hid your confiscated items is all that "tech savvy". Kids did that all the time without having things like find my phone. But the reason why things are taken away is not to prevent them from using them. It's to take away some of their freedoms as punishment and deterrent for future misbehavior. Even if a kid can sneak in and get to their phone, and use it a little bit, the effect of the punishment is still the same.

Agree, not only is it still inconvenient, but it teaches the child that there are expectations. If they want to work around their punishment and maintain a relationship with their parents (even if that is only to not get in more trouble),  then they have to work within the limits of the conditions.  Rather than just stamp their feet and whine it's not fair and all someone else's fault then demand their unassailable rights to everything without question.

Which is why we all encrypt our drive and then lock down the bios with a password and bootloader with secure boot.

Even young coworkers/apprentices in IT I worked with had next to no knowledge in IT/Tech... 

 

Well I'm glad I grew up in the days where the whole computer stuff was booming

Reminds me of doing ISP tech support and a mom asking for parental controls for her 14-year-old son.  I wish I could've told her the truth: not only is your kid going to find his way around those controls, he's already seen things on the internet that would make porn stars blush.  By the time you're a teenager it's pretty much too late for your parents to lock things down.
