Which Cooler for i9-9900KF

Hey guys,

Looking to go for the i9-9900K on a Asus Prime Z390-A and 2x32GB memeory modules. I dont plan to OC the PC straight away but might do so in the future with a all core 5GHz possibly, or maybe a syn all cores in the Asus BIOS. What air cooler would be better. between the Be Quiet! Dark Rock 4 and the Dark Rock Pro 4. I would most-likely change the fans with a Corsair MLfans for the better static pressure and airflow. at this time not considering a AIO as they are quite expensive. If i had to go AIO i would consider the NZXT X42 if it could do the OC as well. Crazy how a i7 5960X would need a Dark Rock Pro 4 but now might need that for a i9 9900k ?

Will also be using Artic Silver 5 as Thermal paste.

Thanks

360mm is about $300 here :( and the Dark Rock 4 is $100 with the pro 4 at around $120 so even with corsair ML fans there is a huge price gap for me. i was hoping the Dark Rock 4 with a ML fan would be enough ?

Why'd you downgrade the fan?

Yes the Dark Rock 4 is enough my 9900K is clocked at 5ghz just fine under one.

I'd get the drp4, we're talking about a ~200w processor here. and do you already have the board? because there's better for the price

Just get the Dark Rock Pro 4, and leave the excellent default fans. No need to change them.

Also check out the Noctua D15/D14.

If you want to change the fans with something better, don't downgrade them with the ML fans, get Noctua, or just leave the default ones.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

OP is clearly trying to make a value orientated purchase which makes AiO's being far more expensive, louder, more prone to failure and worse at VRM cooling terrible choices.

Yes, the DR. Pro 4 if you can afford and fit it in, but the vanilla Dark Rock 4 also suffices and regarding the fan; the beQuiet! Silent Wings are better than the Corsair ML's in every way, air pressure, noise and reliability. Therefore it's not about not needing to change, it'd be an actual downgrade to change.

Corsair ML fan is a downgrade ? looking at the spec sheet its about 60CFM at 1.08 static pressure at 100% ML140 is 97CFM at 3.0 static pressure. of course the ML is a louder than the default fans but i dont mind that extra sound. I will be doing some 3D rendering so CPU will be pegged at 100% for extended periods of time.

What temps are you getting on the DR4 at 5GHz all cores maxed ?

200w? really wow. i though it was a 95W TDP cpu  with over clocking i would have guessed maybe 150TDP ? I am planing to use the Corsair 450D but the height of the DRP4 is really close to the case limit. so was a bit concerned with that as well.

my above comments for the ML and default fans. i read reviews people changed it for the Noctuas and got a few *C better temps so that why considering the ML looks better with the build.

Like 77Cº max temp on full stressing, while being pretty much inaudible.

correct, at the STOCK (not even turbo) clock, at the moment it starts to turbo, it exceeds it's tdp, that's intel tdp for you

so if you don't benefit from the ring bus or quicksync, go for a 3700x or 3900x

The 9900K is a space heater - get a good board and cooler else you're going to regret buying it as a whole.

The 95W is meaningless - in reality, the 9900K uses about 200W under load.

unfortunately out of budget. I agree it would probs work better but as this need to be a 24/7 reliable build i rather go with air as less points of failure. I have had some AIO pumps fail on me and to get a RA can take like 2-3 weeks which i cant afford as a down time as this will be like a work PC for video editing and 3d work.

What board would you suggest ? I am still planning the build but the board must support 128GB in total memory size. I have just had a good experience with ASUS BIOS and there is a ASUS service centre like 40min away in case i have a issue. so quick easy fix for a RA.

At the moment i have to stick with intel as most of the application i use are currently heavily optimised for intel. I was considering the Ryzen as well. mostly using Maya, Zbrush, Substance, Adobe CC etc.

Why do you need 128GB of memory? if you literally have a workflow that requires this amount of system RAM you are shopping for the wrong CPU, you should be looking at Threadrippers.

Up to 64GB on the 9900K is fine and pretty doable, 128gb? you will have hell to get a motherboard that accepts it, your frequency and timings will be terrible and even on Dual Channel it is likely the IMC will choke having to address that much RAM.

Humm that's not bad with a 5G OC. might still work. i mean case wise instead of the Corsair 450D i could go with the Cooler master Silencio S600 it does have a taller CPU clearance so i could fit the DRP4

Yes the 9900KF is terrible value if you're not getting it solely for gaming. At this point then just grab a R9 3900X since Ring Bus alone while helpful and useful won't be enough to make up the ludicrous pricing on the CPU, you do need that QuickSync Hardware Acceleration to make a case for Intel.

And even then like I mentioned if his projects exceeds 64GB of usage and he needs 128GB then it doesn't matter he probably should aim for the TR2950X or wait for 3rd gen Threadripper at the end of the year.

True. but threadripper and intel HEDT is quite $$ The 128GB is more for working in after effects and Premier as loading lost of videos i would need to have the buffer. only getting 64GB now but plan to later get 128GB. I saw that the i9 9900K supports 128GB and the new BIOS for the Z390 for ASUS says support for 32GB DIMMS.  The only 32GB dimms i can get are : 2400MHz at 16-16-16-39 (tested) and SPD(15-15-15-36) not sure why the difference though.

but once I have a Nvidia RTX 2070 connected the iGPU will anyways be disabled so quicksync will not really work right ? that's why was considering the F as i have a dedicated GPU and the F is cheaper as it does not have the iGPU.

the few 32 GB sticks that are on market are very slow. while you can maybe get something from overclocking. any IMC is gonna have a nighmare getting anything more than 2666 mhz.

unless you explicitly disable the iGPU in BIOS. its still there. and if you arent going to use quicksync anyways. a threadripper or 3900x makes more sense.
